The Atomic Age of America ushered in many innovations that have stood the test of time, such as Barbie dolls, hula hoops, and McDonalds. But the era also produced a ton of bizarre, automated inventions that were lessJetsons and more junk.
In 1949, a dime would buy you a 30-second spritz from the brand-new Sun-Tan Lotion dispenser by Star Manufacturing Co. The company hoped that the machine would catch on at swimming pools and beaches, but frankly it looks a little bit too much like a gasoline pump for comfort. Consumers decided it was easier to just carry their own bottles, and the rest is history.
