FaceBook Portal and The New Video Calling

Facebook has something it wants in every home to be always on, always watching always listening. Its called FaceBook Portal. The FaceBook Portal devices are video-calling machines that people can use to talk through a screen to other Facebook users. They have a 12-megapixel camera with high-definition video and artificial intelligence software; the camera follows people about as they move around. It’s a 10 inch screen that lets you make video calls to other Facebook users while being able to move and talk freely with a smart camera and smart sound.

    Smart Camera

What do they mean by smart camera? This is automatic framing, which Facebook calls “Smart Camera,” makes every video call more comfortable to participate in. The 12-megapixel camera can do 5x zoom and capture movement within a 140-degree range. The four-mic array flanks the lens on either side, doing double duty of listening to commands and noise canceling during chats. I don’t have a great reason why but its placement reminds me of the eye above the pyramid on the back of a dollar bill.

The Facebook Portal is Alexa enabled. To trigger the function, say “Hey Portal” and then “call [enter name here].” Simple enough. Though the actual “Hey Portal” features are essentially limited to things like making calls and putting the unit to sleep.

The FaceBook Portal Setup and Use

Setting up my Portal Plus was easy. Popped the thing out of the box, plopped it on my desk, plugged it in, connected to Wi-Fi and my Facebook account. I was frankly blown away by how well-designed Portal was. It has one purpose — calling other people who use Facebook. Surprisingly it does that extremely well. But Who still uses Facebook?

The great thing about these devices is that they are stationary and always on. It uses software to follow you around a room, always keeping the speaker in frame and cropped. I found this very useful. I expected it to be chintzy because it’s the company’s first piece of hardware. But shockingly, it wasn’t. The screen is huge on my Portal Plus. Imagine putting an iPad Pro on a tall vertical sound bar and adding an always-on camera in my home, connected to Facebook, all the time, 24 hours a day. I know Facebook has been working to improve how users can manage their private data on the platform. But Still.

    The Final Thought

They took all the pieces that are available, condensed them and perfected the Video Calling. If Facebook was more trustworthy in the public’s eyes and Video calling wasn’t such an invasion of privacy to begin with , There could be one in every home. There won’t be.

  • Houston, We have Verizon 5G!

    Houston, We have Verizon 5G!

We have liftoff! Big news and advancement in the Verizon 5G world. Verizon, Motorola, Qualcomm and Samsung announced that they’ve achieved the world’s first 5G data transmission to a smartphone using a “commercial 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) network.” Verizon kicked in the spectrum and network, Samsung made the radio, Motorola obviously built the phone and it’s Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X50 5G modem inside that little backpack. A video Call was placed, history is made and the future is upon us.

Currently, Verizon’s 5G service is available only in a few cities. Pushing broadband for home internet but many providers are racing to launch services. AT&T has said its 5G network will be ready to go live this month, while Sprint and LG have said they’ll try to be first to launch a phone next year. While Intel gets its 5G modem technology together Qualcomm has a head start there. They have said it expects a couple waves of flagship phones launching in 2019.

    Verizon 5G Status

The trial, which took place in Providence, Rhode Island, used a Motorola Moto Z3 with a 5G moto mod — which Verizon called “the world’s first 5G-upgradeable smartphone. Verizon in October then announced that the fifth US city to receive its 5G network will be Panama City, Florida, as the carrier aims to “stabilize and strengthen” its wireless network across the hurricane-impacted Panhandle and throughout the Bay and Gulf counties. If you have to rebuild, rebuild in 5g.

“As the community rebuilds, Verizon will be … committing $25 million to build the most technologically advanced wireless network in the area. We will include 5G technology as part of that infrastructure,” According to Verizon technology leader Kyle Malady last month.

    The Final Though

Im so happy and excited also a little bit scared. Like 98% excited and 2% scared. This is momentous. We have real 5G, the world is changing before our very eyes. If you have been working on it, Now is the time to launch your holographic call platform.

  • 5 Great Ways to Make Iced Coffee at Home.

5 Great Ways to Make Iced Coffee at Home.

When my sister introduced me to iced coffee, I didn’t think I’d like it. Not only did I like it, I decided I could learn how to make iced coffee on my own. I became obsessed with iced coffee. You need to get your cold caffeine on. Now the fix just got so much better. Let me tell you 5 great ways to make Iced coffee at home.

Iced coffee is my life. When I wake up, often around the time party animals on the west coast are just heading home, I start each day not with a cup of freshly brewed hot java, but with a tall, blessed glass of creamy iced coffee in a glass. I’ve been an iced coffee junkie for years and years. To say I couldn’t live without it is an understatement. It gives me the tools I need to cope.

Iced coffee is a complicated thing, and there are many different approaches. One would think that one could merely pour brewed coffee into a glass full of ice and call it a day…but I find that method extremely flawed. First, no matter how packed with ice the glass is, once the hot coffee hits, some of the ice is bound to melt. This has two disastrous results. First the The overall strength of the coffee flavor is diluted. Then iced coffee isn’t as cold as it could (or should) be. The finished glass of iced coffee should be frigid, not sorta cold with half-melted ice cubes floating around. Do I have a Solution, yes cold brew.

    Cold Brew

First, find a bag of the strongest coffee you can find. I like to use Cafe Busto’s dark espresso. Pour in the coffee to a large container, 3 gallons at least. Add 2 gallons of cold water. cold water… Mix and cover the container. Let this sit in your fridge for 12-24 hours. When the time has passed, grab a separate container and place a fine mesh strainer over the top.Place a couple of layers of cheesecloth inside the strainer. Slowly pour the steeped coffee through the strainer. Be patient it will take a little while to seep through. Use a spoon to gently press/force the last of the liquid through. Transfer your coffee gold to a new container. This amount of coffee concentrate lasts me a good three weeks to a month if kept tightly covered in the fridge.

    Flash Brew

Not your cup of coffee? we you are wrong, but try the Flash Brew method and see if that is more your unrefined style. People who love the nuances of hot coffee and those who drink their coffee black will gravitate towards flash brew for keeping the same profile of a hot cup of coffee while adding that extra oomph. Here are a few tricks to getting the perfect iced coffee, flash brew-style:

Brew your hot, fresh coffee. Make it stronger than usual; you’ll be diluting it with ice. The strength of the brew depends on how many ice cubes you plan to use.
If you want sugar in your coffee, add it now as the granules tend to dissolve more easily in hot liquid.Transfer your freshly-brewed coffee into a carafe. Let the coffee cool to room temperature (approximately one hour), then move into the refrigerator for a further two hours to thoroughly chill.Fill a tall glass with the chilled coffee, add a few ice cubes plus milk or cream, if preferred. Stir well and serve.

    • Use a full-bodied coffee to avoid tartness
    • For an iced coffee with a sweet, creamy, and/or chocolate flavor profile, go with a roast from Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Honduras. Think cream soda on the rocks!
    • For a refreshing tea-like iced coffee with fruit notes go with an Ethiopian or Kenyan roast. The fruit flavors will pop on ice.

    Vietnamese Iced Coffee

Vietnamese Iced Coffee is a very strong coffee. This intensely brewed concentrate is creamy, rich, smooth in texture and has a bold flavor. Here is how to make Vietnamese iced coffee without using Vietnamese coffee filter. To make this coffee, any type of coffee grounds can be used. In Vietnam, the Cafe Du Monde French Roast Chicory is usually appreciated as the benchmark. But, as long as the coffee is light to medium coarse, it can be used in the preparation of this coffee. It is easy, Fill a tall glass with ice cubes. Pour the freshly brewed coffee in the glass.Pour 2 tbsp condensed milk on top and mix gently. Serve immediately.

Not Enough Time, Try Instant Iced Coffee

You know how you’ve always been told that instant coffee had to be made hot? Well it also makes iced coffee! Just mix cold water with instant coffee grounds, add some creamer, and stir. It can take a minute or two for the coffee to dissolve, but it does!

    Keitel Style

I hoped you picked up some good Iced coffee ideas and skills. Iced Coffee on a hot day can pick you up and set you free. Lets be honest though, There is only one way to drink coffee, Keitel style. Hot, lots a cream, lots a sugar.

  • What Your Exterminator Won’t Tell You

What Your Exterminator Won’t Tell You

Bugs are the worst. When the weather is hot they’re everywhere. When the weather is cold they rush into your home. Here are some great tips for dealing with bugs that your exterminator won’t tell you about. If there are insects bugging you, try some of these tips!

Tips Your Exterminator Won’t Tell You

    Homemade Roach Trap

Cockroaches are unsettling little bugs. If you want to deal with them yourself, use a banana. No, seriously! Get a jar and rub petroleum jelly around the inside of the rim. Then put a banana down inside the jar and put the trap near where you’ve seen roaches. The banana will attract the roaches and then the petroleum jelly will keep them from climbing out of the jar. Then you can just dump the little jerks outside, far from your house.

    Trash Etiquette

If you’ve got flies around your trash can outside then you need to take a few steps to prevent them from being attracted to it. First, get a can with a tight, well-fitting lid. Second, make sure you’re washing your trashcan out regularly. One every couple of weeks is a good pace! Finally, don’t hesitate to put some borax in your trash can after you wash it to keep it from smelling appetizing to flies.

    Fix Plumbing Problems

Many bugs are attracted to water. If you’ve got slight plumbing leaks, damp areas or particularly dark and quiet regions in your house, many bugs consider that an open invitation. Make sure your plumbing is all repaired and up-to-date. Also, make sure you keep your basement and the area under the sink both dry and inhospitable for common pests!

    You Can’t Get Them All

Some people want to have houses spotless and completely free of all bugs. This isn’t quite feasible, however, as some bugs are nearly impossible to keep out. Fleas and bedbugs are going to come in on your clothes. Mites and gall flies are so tiny they’re hard to even notice. Just make peace with the fact that you can’t get them all out of your house and you’ll be much happier!

    Target

Bounty is a well-regarded name brand of paper towels for a number of reasons. Thankfully, Target has a really great price on this absorbent and excellent product. Believe it or not, Target is selling 8-packs of these paper towels for $14.50. It’s worth noting that these are double-sized rolls, and Bounty paper towels are very economic in use. Bounty advertises this 8-pack as equivalent to 20 normal rolls of paper towels! That’s a huge value.

  • Should You Buy an LG V40?

Should You Buy an LG V40?

The newest phone from LG, the LG V40, is here and making waves. Is it worthy of all the hype surrounding it? Or is it a lame entry into the packed Android market? Today we’re going to take an in-depth look at this new smartphone and tell you whether it’s worth your hard-earned money.

    LG V40 Review

    Design

First things first: this is a smart-looking phone. All-glass designs are a favorite of ours, and this phone feels great in the hand. In fact, it’s probably one of the best-feeling LG phones we’ve seen. The screen is huge and vibrant, and, unlike other premium phones, the LG V40 still has a traditional headphone jack.

The V40 also sports the industry-standard water resistance and wireless charging capabilities. While these features are unsurprising, they remain as convenient as ever. If you’ve been waiting to upgrade your smartphone you’re going to be impressed by these quality-of-life upgrades.

    Cameras

The five (yes, five) cameras are the star of the show here. While the Pixel 3 and iPhone XS are impressive for snapshots, the LG V40 is a real photographer’s smartphone. The wide-angle lens is unparalleled for sprawling vista shots. The lighting and colors in bright shots are absolutely stellar. There are low-light options, great portrait settings and more. If you love snapping photos and like a ton of options, this is the phone for you.

    Pricing

The V40 runs between $900 and $980 in the US, depending on where you go to get it and which carrier you choose. That makes it comparable in price to most premium smartphones like the Galaxy Note 9 and iPhone XS. It is a tad bit less expensive than those phones, but not by much. While it might cost a bit less, you don’t sacrifice on power or speed.

    Bottom Line

If you’re an Android fan who wants a great phone for taking pictures then you’re going to love the V40. However, casual shutterbugs might find the multitude of settings a bit overwhelming. Compared to the Note 9 and Pixel 3, this is a solid phone. You won’t be disappointed in this phone for the price, and we can fully recommend it (especially for photographers).

  • If You Have Type 2 Diabetes You Need to Avoid These Foods

If You Have Type 2 Diabetes You Need to Avoid These Foods

Type-2 diabetes affects as much as ten percent of the adult population of the United States. If you’ve recently been diagnosed with diabetes it can be scary to figure out what you should do. Always listen to your doctor’s advice and follow medical guidelines. While you’re at it, make sure you avoid these foods.

Foods to Avoid if You have Type-2 Diabetes

    Milkshakes

As much as you may love them, you need to avoid milkshakes. The classic milkshake is full of carbohydrates, sugar, calories and fat and is absolutely terrible for people with diabetes. There’s also not a version of this classic that doesn’t have these things. Even non-dairy milkshakes are loaded with sugar and fat, so just avoid them altogether.

    Biscuits and Gravy

Southerners love this traditional breakfast, but diabetics need to stay away from it. This dish has your entire daily allotment of saturated fat if you’re diabetic. That’s not to even mention the calories and salt content. If you really want a similar dish, consider tofu sausage replacement, low-sodium biscuits and vegan gravy! Still, keep in mind that this is a heavy dish and don’t go crazy on it.

    Fried Chicken

Fried anything is bad news for diabetics. We know that comprises about half of all American cuisine, but, trust us, it’s bad for you. Your body will thank you for avoiding fried chicken, French fries and corn dogs. Cards, sodium, fat, cholesterol and calories are a few of the alarmingly-high bad things found in most fried foods.

    Snack Cakes

Companies like Twinkie and Little Debby make pre-packaged snack cakes that are downright awful for diabetics. Sugar, sodium, white flour and tons of preservatives comprise most of these snack cakes, all of which are awful for anyone, especially a diabetic. Here’s the good news, though: you can make your own pastries at home and restrict the amount of sugar, fat and other harmful things that go into them. That way you can have your cake and eat it too!

In general, remember that your condition is serious and you need to heed your doctor’s advice. If something feels wrong, don’t hesitate to contact a medical specialist. Eat healthy, be careful and stay safe!

  • Tech Throwback: The LaserDisc

    Tech Throwback: The LaserDisc

I like to take a look at where I’ve been to evaluate where Im going. Technology is cyclical after all… wait no its not. That said I still like all the feels that come rushing back like a flood of nostalgia every time I get my hand on the tech I grew up with. I’m going to go back periodically and take a looking at the stuff that used to blow our hair back and get our minds rolling. Some of these device blew up and changed the world, some where ahead of their time and some just fell flat and became colossal failures. Today’s throwback is a failure and a bomb, but has one redeeming quality that makes it invaluable.. Today we are talking about the LaserDisc

    LaserDisc History

LaserDisc (originally a trademarked term invented by Pioneer Electronics) is an optical recording medium primarily used for video recordings. In fact it was the first optical recording device to be made publicly available. The technology first began development in the late 50’s; however, it didn’t debut until 1978. The disc resembled a Compact Disc the size of a vinyl record album. The similar appearance is because it was a precursor to CD.

The format originally didn’t have a proper name. It was called many different things, but was first marketed as MCA DiscoVision (or simply “DiscoVision”), with MCAnote and Dutch electronics company Philips having significantly contributed to the development of the format. Moreover, Jaws was the first movie to be released on it. In 1980, Pioneer Electronics bought out the rights and patents to the format, and subsequently renamed it “LaserVision”, with the format introduced in Japan in 1981. Although they would later use “LaserDisc”note as a brand name, LaserVision was the official name of the format until the early 1990s, when Pioneer finally began to use “LaserDisc” as the format’s official name.

    The Resolution Quality

With the exception of DVD, Laserdiscs are by far the best-looking and sounding home video system available. Pioneer pitches LD as “60% sharper” than VHS. LD image quality is roughly comparable to standard 16mm film, VHS is roughly comparable to 8mm film.Depending on source material and the transfer to disc, LD is above live TV broadcast quality. For NTSC, this is 425 TVL (luminance lines horizontally for 3/4 of the screen width) and about 482 scan lines, compared to 330×482 for broadcast.

LaserDisc gave way to letterbox. When LaserDisc came to market, people, for the first time, could watch theatrical movies in their homes. Some intelligent producers actually thought that some people would perhaps enjoy actually seeing the whole film. As a result, letterboxing was developed to mat the picture with black bars on the top and bottom. Enabling the wide center area to show the aspect ratio of the original theatrical presentation. Prior to this everything was presented in Pan and Scan mode whereby the wide version of the film was intelligently cropped to where the action was – but still eliminating 30% or more of the picture.

    Star Wars on LaserDisc

This is LaserDisc’s immortal contribution to humanity, film and society. LaserDiscs digital resolution was far superior to what was available in the late 70s and 80s. This made it the perfect platform to watch the most epic space saga to date. This tech was ahead of its time and prime for Star Wars fans. Most definitely the best way to watch Star Wars out side the cinema theaters. Great right? It is, but ends up being legendary. The Original trilogy is released in high quality LaserDisc in 1986. As the tech fades to the DVD smaller format just about the same time George Lucas sets his remasters to work. We know of the horrors that became of the re-release…. Han shot first!… As I digress, only the Remastered versions make it to DVD. Thus ensuring the original masterpieces are forever forgotten to the approaching digital DVD revolution.

However, LaserDisc saves the day. Nerds unit and covet the LaserDisc copies. Later converting them to a higher resolution digital copy that will circulate through the internet and ensuring the glory days of Star Wars..
