Best-Selling Video Games of All Time

Video games have come a long way from being considered little more than kids’ toys. Now classified as a proper art form, video games have outsold many other forms of entertainment media. After all, who doesn’t love a good video game? With that in mind, today we’re looking at the ten best-selling video games of all time. The one at the top may surprise you!

Best-Selling Video Games of All Time

    10. New Super Mario Bros

Originally released for the Nintendo DS in 2006, New Super Mario Bros was a return to 2D platforming for everyone’s favorite plumber. This game went on to sell 30 million units! In large part, that number was bolstered by the huge install base of the Nintendo DS. It also helped that Mario’s adventures tend to attract a large audience, and the game was heavily promoted by Nintendo. It didn’t hurt that the original entry in this series is higher on this list, either!

    9. Pokemon Red and Blue

Originally released in 1996 on the Game Boy, Pokemon became an international phenomenon. Spurred on by the success of its anime and card game adaptations, “Pokemania” swept the nation in the late 90’s. Nintendo really reaped the rewards on this one, with the game selling 31 million units. If you say you haven’t heard of Pikachu, you’re lying. More than 20 years later, this series is still going strong. Also, if you’re noticing a Nintendo theme developing, get used to it: these guys have sold a ton of video games.

    8.  Wii Sports Resort

The 2009 Wii Sports Resort was released as a follow-up to Wii Sports. It sold a solid 33 million units! Not quite as impressive as its predecessor, but still quite the performance. It just goes to show how much people love waggling their motion-controllers at the TV screen.

    7. Mario Kart Wii

Did we mention the Wii sold a ton of units? Well, the Wii sold a ton of units. Mario Kart Wii, which released in 2008, went on to sell 37 million units itself! It was largely bolstered by the massive install base of the Wii and the promise of motion-controlled steering. Motion controls were really all the rage back in the late 2000’s. It was a weird era, kids.

    6. Super Mario Bros

While this game was originally released in 1985, you’ve definitely heard of it. Chances are good you’ve played it. This mega-popular smash-hit made Nintendo a household name and redefined video games. Super Mario Bros, released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, sold 40 million copies and introduced American audiences to Nintendo. It’s hard to believe that’s been 30 years ago, now!

    5. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

The youngest game in the Top Ten, by far, is PlayerUnkown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG. Originally released for the PC in 2017, the game is actually a mod of a game called Arma. The unpolished, buggy mess that is PUBG has somehow managed to sell 50 million units, which really goes to show that concept beats execution. PUBG’s chief competition, Fortnite, would likely make this list if it wasn’t free-to-play. However, as the game is free, it’s impossible to chart sales numbers.

    4. Wii Sports

Packed-in with the Wii, Wii Sports released alongside the console in 2006. This entry represents the first huge jump: while PUBG has sold 50 million copies, Wii Sports sold 83 million. To put that into perspective, it sold more than double what the original Super Mario Bros sold. That’s crazy! Like we said, people really love waggling their motion-controllers at the TV screen!

    3. GTA V

A relative newcomer to the top ten, Grand Theft Auto V was released in 2013 for a multitude of platforms. It broke several records for fastest-selling entertainment media within 24 hours of its release. This massive, sprawling and ambitious title rode high on the successes of the previous entries in the franchise. After the juggernaut that was GTA IV, it only made sense that the fifth entry would blow everyone away. Get this: the game sold 95 million units across all platforms. That’s more copies sold than units of the Wii. Talk about a mega-hit!

    2. Minecraft

Oh, come on, you knew this game was going to be near the top. In fact, we’re betting you expected it to be the very top. However, this game has sold an absolutely absurd number of units across its various releases. Since its release in 2011, the game has sold 144 million units. From its numerous releases on nearly every system imaginable, the game has been a huge hit. Turns out, we’re all just big kids who want to play with Legos.

The Best-Selling Game of All Time: Tetris

Yup, Tetris is still the highest-selling video game ever. By a tremendous margin. It’s telling that the highest-selling game on the list is also the oldest in the top ten. Released in 1984, the game has sold over 170 million units. The main factors behind the game’s enduring success include its huge release window, having been introduced in 1984 but popularized by a 1989 Game Boy release. The game also saw releases on various home computers and systems and remains a best-seller even today.

Versions of the ever-popular game are still for sale on phones and game consoles today. Is it lonely at the top, Tetris?

  • Best Over the Counter and Natural Pain Remedies!

Best Over the Counter and Natural Pain Remedies!

Sometimes you just need a bit of pain relief. Whether it’s sore muscles, a bad bruise, a killer headache or whatever else, you’d rather it just not hurt so bad.

Thankfully, there are plentiful over-the-counter remedies available as generics to help relieve your pain. There are also a few natural solutions that many people swear by when it comes to pain remedies. We’ll highlight a few of the most popular so you can make an informed choice!

Best Over the Counter (or Natural) Pain Remedies

    OTC: Ibuprofen

The brand name versions of this drug are Advil or Motrin. It’s been clinically tested with a nearly 9 out of 10 rate of people feeling it’s worth taking. It could upset your stomach, so make sure you take it with food. Also, it could cause kidney damage, so don’t take it if you’ve got a history of kidney problems!

    Natural: Turmeric

Many swear by the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric. It’s been shown to help with upset stomach, indigestion, and even help as part of treatment for more serious conditions. It could even help with common aches and pains. If you’re the type who doesn’t tend to like taking pills, try this out the next time you’ve got a sore muscle!

    OTC: aspirin

Aspirin is one of the most well-known pain relievers, often found in the brand-name Alka-Seltzer. In its various forms, it can be either a pain reliever or an indigestion aid. Children under 12 should avoid aspirin, though, as it could be harmful to the liver if taken too much. Keep in mind this is aspirin with a lower-case a, which is different from the version from Bayer with a capital A.

    Natural: Heat and Ice Application

The pain-relieving qualities of applying heat and/or ice to a sore area are well-document. However, be careful when applying hot or cold items to your body! Apply heat to an area if it is stiff or if your pain is arthritic. Conversely, ice can help reduce swelling and cut back on inflammation. Athletes swear by this pain-relieving method! Speak to a physician about how this natural remedy could be applied to your aches or pains if you’re hurt.

    OTC: Aspirin

The brand name Aspirin, which is different from Alka-Seltzer’s version, is another well-known pain remedy. It can reduce fever, as well, and is even known to have helpful effects in those with heart disease. However, keep in mind that it is a blood-thinner. If you’re at risk for internal bleeding, stick with ibuprofen or one of the natural pain remedies!

    Natural: Acupuncture

Seeking pain relief from an acupuncturist may seem silly at first, but it’s a well-documented and ancient practice. The Chinese art helps relieve pain through a process known as qi manipulation, altering the path of your body’s natural energies. Scientific study of the practice has found that the pain-relieving qualities are a result of the serotonin released by the sensation of the needles being driven into your skin. Either way, it’s been proven to help in some cases!

    OTC: Acetaminophen

This medicine works by affecting the part of your brain that controls temperature and regulates pain messages. As such, it doesn’t alter the physical causes of your pain, but instead tricks you into not feeling the pain. While that might sound scary, it’s quite safe! Prolonged sessions of taking acetaminophen can lead to liver damage, though, so be aware! Just take enough to ease your pain, don’t overdo it.

    Natural: Cryotherapy

There are a few ways to go about this, whether with a cryotherapy chamber or just an ice bath. The idea behind cryotherapy is that, by shocking your body with cold, you make your body produce special type of protein. These cold-shock proteins have anti-inflammatory properties that can help naturally fight pain!

    OTC: Naproxen

Those with a history of heart disease may prefer naproxen over ibuprofen. Naproxen is good for treating general aches and pains, as it is an anti-inflammatory. It does run the same risk of upsetting the stomach that many other over-the-counter pain remedies, so take it with food!

    Natural: Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy

The theory behind PEFT is that using electromagnetic fields to stimulate natural anti-inflammatory compounds. While it sounds high-tech, you can actually get the treatment for between $30 and $60 from a physical therapist or chiropractor. If you want a machine in your own home, they’re a bit pricey: they run around $1500 on the low end.

  • Top Ten Video Game Controllers

    Top Ten Video Game Controllers

From the very first home video game console until today, nothing has defined a system more than its controller. The original Atari 2600 was well-known for its joy-stick controller, and Nintendo has made a name for itself as a controller innovator. Today, we’re taking a look at the ten best video game controllers of all time and what they did for the industry. After all, you’ve got to have a bridge between yourself and the game world that works well!

    Top Ten Video Game Controllers

    10. NES

The original NES controller is truly a thing of beauty. The first of its kind, the NES controller defined what a home console controller could look like. The cross-shaped D-Pad was much more comfortable and easier-to-use than the joy sticks that had been common before it. The buttons are clicky, the design is solid, and the build is sturdy. All-in-all, this controller serves as a blueprint for every innovation that comes after it.

    9. SNES

A huge leap from the NES Controller, the SNES controller featured a rounded dog-bone shape and shoulder buttons. It also included two more face buttons, X and Y, solidifying the cross-shaped face button alignment. This excellent controller paved the way for ever more to follow.

    8. Original PlayStation

Largely a take-off on the Super Nintendo controller, the original PlayStation controller adds two more shoulder buttons and ergonomic grips. That ergonomic design is largely to thank for the design of nearly every controller that followed! It wouldn’t be until the DualShock released that Sony really defined modern controllers, though!

    7. N64

The N64 controller’s trident-like shape is truly awful at a glance, and this controller hasn’t held up at all over time. However, it was highly influential at the time. Namely, this controller is remembered for its analog stick. The analog stick was critical for games like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time to function properly. Navigating a 3D space in a video game wouldn’t have been nearly as fun without the analog stick!

    6. Wiimote

Speaking of innovative Nintendo controllers, let’s not forget the Wiimote. The Wii was one of the highest-selling consoles of all time, due in large part to its controller. Utilizing motion-controls and a unique remote-style build, the controller appealed to non-gamers. It could be augmented with add-ons like the Nunchuck and Pro Controller for more intense games. Mainly, though, it’s for waggling at your TV.

    5. Mouse and Keyboard

This one might seem like a cop-out but bear with us. Some of the greatest video games of all time have been made for PC first and foremost. After all, games have to be made on computers, too! Try playing a MOBA or real-time strategy game on a controller, for instance! In fact, many will argue that first-person shooters are immensely easier to control with mouse and keyboard. There are plenty of people who would use this tried-and-true setup over any gamepad.

    4. Xbox 360

Long considered a golden standard in game controllers, the Xbox 360 controller was a big deal. While other game systems had experimented with wireless controllers, the 360 came out of the box with one. The 360 controller is largely a synthesis of what worked in the DualShock 2 and Xbox controllers. Then, add a dash of wireless control and responsive, analog triggers and you’ve got a fantastic controller. Pretty much every system released after 2005 has had a controller like this available.

    3. DualShock

After the success of the PlayStation and introduction of 3D games to the system, it was time for a new controller. Sony introduced the DualShock as a follow-up to their original gamepad, and it was a hit. The dual-stick setup and rumble function were both revolutionary. In the modern world, it’s impossible to think of controllers without the influence of this excellent gamepad. After all, Sony’s still using pretty much the same controller two decades later for the PS4.

    2. Joy Cons

The Nintendo Switch has a pretty incredible suit of technology at its disposable. Chief among the system’s innovations are the Joy Cons. These controllers allow for a modular, shifting style of play that makes the system tick. Whether hooked into the sides for handheld play or detached, these motion-sensitive controllers blow us away. You can even use one on its side if you want to share them with a friend for 2-player! If you’re a fan of more traditional controllers, you can even snap them into the Joy Con Grip.

    The Best Controller: GameCube

The GameCube controller is the longest-running controller in history. Originally debuting in 2001, the controller is a class-act in ergonomics. The C-Stick is a little small and awkward, and the D-Pad is adorably tiny, to be fair. However, the analog triggers and satisfying buttons have stood the test of time. After all, Nintendo is still producing these controllers, and you can even use them on the Nintendo Switch. That’s some serious staying power!

  • Introducing the Vision iNext

    Introducing the Vision iNext

No, it’s not the newest Apple phone. The Vision iNext is a crazy-looking concept car from BMW that promises to be all-electric. BMW has introduced the concept as a new direction for their “i line” of cars, such as the i3 and i8. This, however, is iNext, and it looks pretty funky. Needless to say, we’re interested in this odd car, but it may not see the light of day. Let’s talk about this cool-looking concept.

    visioninext
    Slashgear

    Vision iNext: Next Big Thing?

BMW wants the iNext to go into production and be released to mass market by 2021. If it is launched then, it will be the first mass-market BMW with their long-range battery. It will also be the first BMW made with their new vehicle architecture. And, as you can tell from the concept car, that’s an odd architecture indeed.

The very sci-fi looking concept car is sure to change a bit between now and production. As you can see, it has no side mirrors. Instead, it sports side cameras. However, given regulations regarding vehicle safety in the US, it will almost certainly need to add mirrors to the sides. Additionally, the incredibly thin, blue headlights are likely to be made more visible and standardized to make the vehicle easier to see on the road at night.

    Interior Design

The interior is exceedingly luxurious, with lush carpets and sleek finish everywhere around. Backseat displays are projected onto surfaces, so you can use everything from books to posters to back-stop the display. The front infotainment system is said to be controlled by smart gesture control, a la the iPhone X. The steering wheel and pedals are also retractable, as the vehicle is intended to have Level 3 self-driving autonomy.

While it’s still a good while before this car goes into production, it’s definitely striking. The futuristic design shows an eye toward what cars may look like in the upcoming decade. If self-driving, autonomous vehicles become plausible and commonplace, we can foresee some huge changes in the world of transportation. BMW’s concept car might seem far-fetched, but they plan to have it hit market by 2021. Can things change that much in 3 years? We’re excited to find out.

  • Best Ways to Check Credit Score

Best Ways to Check Credit Score

If you’re looking to make a big purchase, like a car or a house, odds are you’re going to need a loan. The way lenders check to see if you’re eligible for that loan, of course, is your credit score. If you often pay bills on time and are financially secure, your score should be high but you should regularly check your score.

Grab hold of your financial potential with free information about your credit score. Knowing your credit score is important because it helps you decide what your buying power is and what areas to focus on to improve this important score.

There are many factors that go into determining a credit score, including employment status, credit history, and financial consistency. There are also several different types of credit scores rather than a standard way to measure creditworthiness. Although banks and lenders may have their own method to determine a credit score, there are ways that general consumers can monitor their credit activity and keep on top of the score as it changes over the years.

If you’re looking to check your credit score you’ll want to do it for free. That’s where these free credit check sites come in!

    Best Free Credit Reports

    Credit.com

Credit.com allows you to see your Experian and VantageScore results for free. VantageScore is a newer model of credit scoring that is usually more up-to-date than the traditional FICO score. You have to sign up for an account with Credit.com, but it’s a free process. The site is known for its credit report card, a quick glance at which things go into your credit. This way, you can see what factors you may need to address to get your score higher!

    Credit Karma

Credit Karma has become the most popular of the free credit monitoring sites for many reasons. You’ve likely heard of this one. Credit Karma offers scores from TransUnion and Equifax, and both are shown as VantageScore. Credit Karma is a free site as well, and they don’t share customer information. If you’re looking for a no-frills credit check, you’re looking for Credit Karma. They offer a great mobile app, too.

    Quizzle

Since 2008, Quizzle has been helping its customers understand their credit history and providing free access to their full credit report and credit score. Quizzle offers free Equifax and VantageScore reports. Once every three months you can see a free report of your score. Quizzle technically has a premium account too, though you’re better off just using the free functions. The free functionality doesn’t require a credit card, too.

    WalletHub

WalletHub offers personal financial tools to users online. Their main product is offering a free daily credit score and report associated with it. WalletHub requires you to take a pre-screening questionnaire before you get your free score. Once you answer a few basic questions, such as your income and the last four digits of your Social, you get a TransUnion credit score. The report is similar to Credit.com’s credit report card, showing you what factors influence your score the most.

  • 7 Ways to Fly for Cheap

7 Ways to Fly for Cheap

Cheap airfare, it’s something we’re all looking for. Finding decent prices on flights can be difficult though. It is human nature to want to travel, to explore your horizons and see new places, or perhaps, to return to the places you once knew.

Whether you want to visit home or see an exotic location, airline travel is fast, but costs a lot of money. What is the best way for finding cheap airline tickets? How do you even start? Whether you are traveling for work, for vacation, or to visit family or friends, finding cheap airfare can help you save on what’s often the largest expense of your trip.

If you’re trying to take a trip and keep finding it difficult to get a decent price, you’re probably looking for some new travel hacks to help you save some money. Well, the good news is that we’re here to help. Let’s talk about the best ways to fly for cheap! Read more below to learn about who is offering the best rates at an amazing price $73 and $39 for one-way flights!

Best Ways to Fly for Cheap

    Compare Airfares

Airfares vary widely, and discount airfare is out there for those who know where to look. The most important thing is that you make sure to compare airfares. The rates offered by one airline may be much higher or lower than the rates of another. If you use one of the popular travel sites, you can easily compare airfares from different airlines.

Also, if you have any flexibility in your schedule, try putting different dates into the sites’ ticket finders to see if that makes a difference. For example, currently, Southwest Airlines is offering flights as low as $73, and Delta is offering flights as low as $39 during the holiday season.

    Use Reputable Flight Search Engines

Some flight search engines actually get a cut from airlines when they help generate sales. That means that you could search for “budget flights” and have normal or even premium flights show up. In order to counter this, use reputable search engines that don’t mislead you. Great options are Skyscanner, Momondo, AirWander and JetRadar. Like we said previously don’t be afraid to shop around to find the best price.

    Get Tickets Early

Get your tickets early — but not too early. You may think it would be smart to buy tickets six months in advance, but in fact, getting tickets more than five months before you need them may keep you from getting the best fares. Aim for two to four months in advance, if possible. If you can’t plan that far in advance, at least try to avoid the two-week period right before a flight, when ticket prices tend to go up.

Specialty sites like “air fare watch dog” provide a medium for you to search for deals between two specific locations, and also can send you alerts when prices drop to a much more affordable rate. This is perfect for those who know where they want to travel, just are not too concerned about when. They can snag a great deal and plan their trip once they get that informative e-mail from the website.

    Airport Selection

Fly in or out of airports that are not in your destination city. If you are flying into New York City, you may be able to get cheaper fares at the Newark airport than you would in New York City’s JFK Airport. If you are going to or from San Francisco, try the Oakland or San Jose airports. Many other cities also have airports that are nearby but outside of the city limits. Flying out of an alternate airport isn’t even necessarily a hardship. For example, If you are going to some parts of Manhattan, ground transportation may get you there faster from Newark than from JFK.

You will benefit on price, though, because not as many people will think of using the other airports, so the seats won’t sell out as quickly. Always think in terms of supply and demand when trying to find cheap airfare.

    Non-Direct Flights

Accept a little inconvenience in exchange for a cheaper price. You may be able to save money on long trips by taking routes where you change planes rather than taking a non-stop flight. If you’re not in a hurry, you don’t need to pay a premium for the faster route. Try traveling lighter to avoid the luggage fees that so many airlines are charging now. Be creative in figuring out how to get by with fewer things on your trip.

    Incognito Mode

Lock up your search history tight and don’t look back. When you start looking at flights and trips, make sure you’re in incognito mode. When you search for flight prices, sites use cookies to track how many times you’ve looked at the flight. Each new time you look, the price goes up. Why? Well, to get you to buy as soon as possible so you “lock in the lowest price.” Yeah, it’s dirty, but you can fight back!

By browsing incognito, you won’t have any cookies tracking you. This allows you to bypass this dirty trick and get a better price for your flight!

Find the Cheapest Days to Book

Try to fly on a Tuesday or a Wednesday, if possible. Those are often the cheapest days of the week. If possible, avoid Fridays and Sundays, when rates tend to go up. Flying right before a major holiday, like Thanksgiving or Christmas, is going to be very expensive. But if you are able to fly on the day of the holiday itself, you can usually pick up some very cheap fares because not many people want to fly then.

  • Top Things to Know About Assisted Living

Top Things to Know About Assisted Living

It can be nerve-wracking when you’re trying to find assisted living for yourself or someone you love. There are a ton of things about assisted living facilities that you won’t be told up front. The contracts you sign are usually complex and full of fine print that you might overlook.

In order to help you prepare yourself for this process, we’ve got a few tips for you to help navigate this process. This should prepare you for some of the things to come.

Pricing Will Be Higher Than You Think

This is the sad reality of assisted living facilities. They’re expensive, and the base fees for rent go up every year. This is due to inflation, of course, and the ongoing upkeep costs of the facility. There are also a number of fees you might not expect. For instance, if someone needs food delivered to their room, or outside transportation, that will have an associated fee. Don’t be afraid to try to negotiate for a better price and make yourself aware of any fees that are hiding. Just ask the facility if there are any fees you haven’t been told about yet before you sign anything.

    Medicare

Not every community will accept Medicare, but those that do can’t turn someone away for using it. However, communities aren’t eager to take in Medicare residents, as they get less money from them than those who pay on their own. As such, a number of facilities have limited “Medicare Beds,” and will often use that number to limit Medicare residents. However, if a resident gives three months of advanced warning that they will be transitioning to Medicare, this usually circumvents the bed limit.

There Are No Doctors at the Facility

Most communities simply don’t have a doctor on-site. Some have nurses on staff, but that’s not a given, so it’s a question worth asking. Generally speaking, most nursing homes will have a doctor on-call. This doctor isn’t located in the facility, so be aware of that when making a decision.

    Residents Can Be Removed Anytime

All a facility has to do to remove a resident is tell them that the facility can no longer meet their needs. Make sure you read the contract very closely to understand the types of things residents can be removed for. Behavioral issues and needs that are too specific for the facility are some of the more common reasons given. Review these carefully before you make a decision.

You Could Be Stuck with the Assisted Living Bills

If you’re signing the contract on the behalf of a parent, and you sign your own name, you could be stuck with the bills should they be unable to pay. In order to prevent this, sign the name of your parent on the contract. Then, make sure to add “by (your name) acting as power of attorney,” and then the date. This will keep you from getting pinned with bills just for trying to help your parent.

  • Bojack Horseman Season 5 Review Roundup

Bojack Horseman Season 5 Review Roundup

The fifth season of Bojack Horseman is upon us, and it’s excellent. If you haven’t caught this show yet, you’re missing out. Following the misadventures of a washed-up actor, the title character, the show deftly handles themes of mental illness and grief. It largely works based on how well it plays its heavy themes off of its silly, anthropomorphic animals and goofy sight gags. Bojack Horseman Seson 5 is no exception and continues the show’s excellent track record of tragedy and comedy in equal measure.

    bojack
    Netflix

    Excellently Acted

The voice cast is as good as ever in this season, delivering very believable performances. Will Arnett in the title role is excellent as always, equal parts pitiable and loathsome as Bojack. Likewise, Aaron Paul brings all the youthful naivete we love from Todd, and his episodes are a highlight of this season. Allison Brie, Amy Sedaris and Paul F. Tompkins are also in rare form this season, bringing pathos and sympathy for their well-meaning, if flawed, characters.

    Innovative as Always

In a show well-known for its innovative plot structures and theme episodes, this season has a few standouts. After the excellent third season episode that took place underwater, and the fourth season arc involving Bojack’s mother, we were wondering how the show could follow those moments. In a twist involving an episode-long eulogy, we were shown how. For fear of spoiling it we won’t delve into too much detail. However, the episode lives up to the series’ very best.

Bojack Horseman Season 5 Bottom Line

Once again, Netflix has delivered an amazing season of TV. If you’re caught up, go ahead and hop in: the season is streaming now. If you haven’t gotten into the show yet, it’s time to binge watch! All five seasons of Bojack Horseman are streaming now on Netflix. If you’re looking for a show that will make you laugh as much as it will make you look inward at your own life, this is it. You won’t find more fair representation of mental illness and the road to recovery on TV. This show is truly in a class all its own.

First, there will be a Super Smash Bros bundle coming out with exclusive Joy Cons and dock art. It releases November 2nd and includes a download code for Smash. The game won’t be available until December 7th, though, so it’s a pre-purchase code until then.

The other bundle is a Pokemon Let’s Go edition, that comes with either Pikachu or Eevee editions of the game. The Joy Cons are Pikachu and Eevee colored, and the two cute monsters adorn the dock art!

Nintendo seemingly confirmed Animal Crossing for Switch, only to reveal it was a trailer for Isabelle to join the roster in Smash. She appears to be a unique character with her own moveset, instead of an echo of Villager. She joins the already-packed game along with Ridley, Simon Belmont, Inklings and many more newcomers.
