The 90Hz refresh rate consumes more power but doesn’t impact the battery life too much.

    On the downside, the Motorola Edge suffers in the camera section. Therefore, if mobile photography is your forte, you should look elsewhere. But where it lacks in one area, it makes up for in another.     The plan I like the best for the not so into your smartphone group is AT&T Senior Plan for Prepaid. The plan is $35 smartphone plan with 1 gig of data, also discounted by $5 with auto pay. With that you get unlimited mins/text and 1gb of data. With the auto pay discount that is only $30 a month, plus no monthly taxes. You will however have to pay the state sales tax. The only downside to that is that you have to purchase your phone at a full retail cost, none of those delicious two year contract freebies.

    I spent many years working retail for the big 3 cellular carriers. I was on the front lines of every iphone release day. Oh the excitement and thrill of the new iphone, it was electric. We felt it, the customers felt it and it was contagious. Lines would form, smiles galore, the phones would sell and commissions where counted. We call it iPhone day, It was a holiday for me.  Still to this day I am inundated with questions about the procurement process of the new iphone. So lets talk about the best deals from the biggest iphone suppliers. Now let’s take a look at AT&T iPhone Deals and what they are  up to with their iPhone deals.

    AT&T says Their AT&T iPhone deals are the best around. If you buy the iPhone XS with AT&T, you’ll get another XS for $700 off if both are purchased on AT&T Next. The limited time offer requires a new line to be added onto a Next plan. The $700 promotion will be applied over 30 months. AT&T notes that you can also receive the $700 as a credit towards a more expensive iPhone, including a 256GB iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, or iPhone XS Max (priced up to $1,450). In these cases the second iPhone will be discounted but not completely free.

You will notice that the prices for AT&T and Verizon as well as directly from Apple are identical. The 24 month cost are based on the total cost of the phone broken in to 24 monthly payments.

    The AT&T iPhone deals are just uninspired and not that great. I’ve have never liked the 30 month plans and they don’t have an enticing yearly upgrade options. I like to get every new phones, not conducive to AT&T’s plans.

    We have 3 big 5g news updates from AT&T’s 5G this week. They seem to be the front runner for the next gen network with a very organized and aggressive expansion model. I have talked about the benefits, Upgrades and all-encompassing human evolution that will come with AT&T’s 5G network many times already. This news update about AT&T’s 5G network is very exciting as we track the progression and implementation. Let’s take a look at what they got for us.

    New Cities

    We already know AT&T’s 5G rollout will include Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City, Raleigh and Waco. However just today AT&T announced the remaining cities to receive mobile 5G through the end of 2018. Congratulations, Houston, Jacksonville, Louisville, New Orleans and San Antonio. This makes a total of 12 major US cities to get the next gen network this year. On top of that, the company also revealed cities that would receive the service in early 2019: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose. As a central FL resident I’m super stoked to be able to be an early adopter of AT&T’s 5G network.

    Data Transmission

    Second up in the update is that The company is stating that they are also exploring a new millimeter wave for 5G; AT&T was successful in making the first millimeter wave wireless 5G connection using standards-based production equipment. The company is planning on utilizing the 5G technology in densely populated areas; it can deliver high speeds under varying conditions.

     

    AT&T’s 5G AirGig

    Lastly we have Project AirGig. AT&T also has an update on Project AirGig,. AirGig Is how AT&T will deliver 5G to rural users. No longer will high speed connections be just for the urban markets. It uses various types of technology, such as low-cost plastic antennas, mounted on top of existing infrastructure, such as utility poles. The company is now ready to begin testing and building commercial-grade equipment for Project AirGig.

    The Final Thought

    Everyday its gets more real, These updates to AT&T’s 5G network are huge advancements and great indicators we are almost there. AT&T’s AirGig idea shows us the prior failures of previous network upgrades won’t be experienced again. I know it won’t be a perfect rollout but it looks like it will be swifter and easier than in the past.

In much the way that 4G LTE was a huge step up from 3G, 5G is slated to revolutionize network speeds. As such, each city slated for the early rollout of the technology is excited to see what it brings. T-Mobile recently remarked that it felt as though New York was more important than Waco in the rollout of the new network. AT&T begs to differ, though.

    A recent statement by AT&T, regarding the T-Mobile comments, had this to say. “We politely disagree — all Americans should have access to next-gen connectivity to avoid a new digital divide.” Putting their money where their mouths are, AT&T also promised three more cities receiving the 5G rollout. Charlotte and Raleigh, NC, as well as Oklahoma City will be receiving the trials of the new tech. That’s a big deal: those are interesting markets to target. North Carolina is hardly “backwoods” area and focusing on it will allow AT&T to gather important network data.

    Timetable

    Major cell service providers are rushing to have 5G live by early 2019. That’s about the time we expect to see the first 5G-compatible handsets. Handsets made before then won’t be able to make use of the new network standard, sadly. However, the earliest we’ll see nationwide 5G coverage is likely early 2020. That’s even assuming that the networks work that quickly. LTE took a number of years to go from small-scale tests to nationwide-rollout.

    Even then, each network is different. Sprint users are all-too-familiar with being in LTE deadzones and relying on 3G, or worse, 1x services. The more stable providers like AT&T and Verizon will likely have wider network coverage faster, if history repeats itself. That said, this technology is foundational, and will likely change the nature of wireless technology in the years to come.

    Major Phone Providers to Stop Selling Your Location

    Data brokers have been accessing phone location services for as long as cell phones have had location tracking. However, in the our modern, breach-sensitive era, such actions make customers understandably upset. Recently, a company called Securus was revealed to be offering a service to law enforcement that allowed them to track the live location of cellphone users. Securus depends upon information from LocationSmart, a data aggregator. Securus actions fell under scrutiny from Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon, who called on the major phone providers to cut LocationSmart off. 

    Responses from Phone Providers 

    Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile have all made statements of varying intensity that they planned to cut off data brokers like LocationSmart. As the FCC investigates the Securus situation, the major phone providers are looking to distance themselves from the situation. Securus, notably, requires nothing more than a vague “court order” (that they don’t check) to access their database. As such, the legality of the service is dubious at best. Law enforcement agencies could easily look up individuals based on their phone and track them without a warrant. This situation is clearly a problem, and the major networks’ attempts to stymie Securus are a step in the right direction. 

    Further complicating matters, a recent “bug” in LocationSmart’s system allowed people to access the location of all phones in their database. Senator Wyden called on the major networks to cut these data brokers off and protect their customers. For their part, they have all made moves to do so.  

    Verizon has confirmed it is terminating contracts with LocationSmart and ZumiGo, another location broker. AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile have all also promised that they will stop providing this data to aggregators. Originally, the location services were meant to be used for things like roadside assistance and fraud prevention. However, Securus accessing user locations without customer consent is a major breach of user privacy.  

    How Soon Will These Changes Go Into Effect?

    The major providers have stated that they won’t be cutting off the location services immediately. According to them, those services offer some positive benefits that they don’t want to interrupt. However, if the cost for small conveniences is the loss of privacy, perhaps those conveniences are unimportant. In any event, Senator Wyden’s actions seem to have brought about a change for the better. The large telecom companies likely either didn’t know or care about this data misuse. Wyden’s public challenge that they should tighten consumer protections moved them to actions, though, and that’s commendable.

The nice thing about this offer is if you are an existing AT&T customer, you don’t have to switch to a new service. Little insider tip, buy both and take advantage of the bogo and $200 off. Purchase an AT&T iPad from Best buy as well and move it on to the second iPhone line to decrease the cost monthly to $10 and give you connection on the iPad.

     

    4. Sprint, Lease option on the iPhone X

    There is a pretty decent option here, Sprint service is greatly improved. Especially if you are in some of their big markets like Orlando, Chicago or Kansas City. For $80 up front you can lease the X. The monthly lease is only $20 a month, added to their $60 unlimited plan and you have your self a pretty great deal.

Big benefits of Uverse is the standard whole home DVR, advanced interface, and no degradation on bandwidth. At&t has since decided it has more lucrative options for its Fiber network so it has begun aggressively switching all its uverse users to Directv.

     

     

     

     

    2.Spectrum

    This one was quite a surprise to jump to number 2 and take the silver. With the Charter/Time Warner merger the T-1000 of internet cable providers have Spectrum offering an affordable 100 Mbps internet options, with quality cable for a reasonable price. They offer all the latest features like whole home DVR and VOIP telephone options with on screen caller ID. While its great they do not make you sign a long term contract, there are installation fees and the price does jump from time to time.

     

     

     

     

     

    3.Verizon Fios

    This is a great service that has dropped to bronze due to Verizon cutting off expansion plans for Fios and their fiber game.Verizon’s Fios internet service is one of the best money can buy. It’s lightning fast, and thanks to its fiber infrastructure, it’s also reliable. Add in customer service that exceeds the expectations you have a top tier cable option, if you are lucky to be in the footprint. The company has established areas,  but it’s mostly major cities with no further plans to expand.  They have an array of customizable  plans to fit your needs and budgets. They have the speed, channel lineup, on-demand and features and functions that you could want. Did I mention they offer Gbps? a gigabit!!!

     

     

     

     

    4.Optimum

    This was another surprise from a traditional cable provider. One of the smaller guys offers the best bang for you buck. Optimum has the 100Mbps, full channel lineups, great interface all the basics are there. Where they stand out is there whole home DVR allows you to record 15 shows at once. This is nice for the prime-time Sunday nights. They are even offering up to 400Mbps in some areas and at a great price.

     

     

     

    5. DriecTV

    You cant count Directv out, and being the focus of At&t’s cable service they are adding more and more features and functions you see in the Uverse system constantly. The Sunday NFL package is legendary and a necessity for all die hard football fans. The downsides are still the contract, the hardware and the outages when it rains, additionally you still have to bring your own internet connection.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    The Worst: Comcast Xfinity

    Billing its self as a premium provider but sorely missing on features function and execution Comcast Xfinity is by leaps and bound the worst dollar spent in the cable business. With constant freezes, reboots, outages and interface lock downs it is a frustrating mess. Just this morning I was forced to watch the Talented Mr Ripply when the menu on Infinity froze forbidding me to change the channel until it has performed its 5 min interface reboot sequence. Nope, just nope.
