    A Battle Royale Battle: Fortnite Being Sued by PUBG

    This one’s gonna be big. PUBG’s (short for Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds) parent company PUBG Corporation has filed suit against Epic Games. Epic, who creates and operates Fortnite, is accused of copyright infringement. The stakes here are pretty astronomical, so this is going to be a rather high-profile case. 

    High Profile? It’s Just Some Video Game Companies, Right? 

    Fortnite sported a record-breaking 3.4 million players online at one time in February of this year. The previous record? 3.3 million players, held by PUBG. Both games represent upwards of a billion dollars in revenue for their parent companies.  

    Those mind-boggling numbers are further augmented by the tremendous success of streamers, gamers who air their gameplay for entertainment. Both PUBG and Fortnite streamers can pull in thousands upon thousands of viewers while playing the battle royale games.If judges agree to look at the Korean company’s suit, it could be on the same scale as the recent Samsung and Apple case. Ironically, that case featured an American company suing a Korean one over patent claims. 

    Complications for the Suit 

    This case will be an odd one. For one thing, while PUBG went live before Fortnite in March of 2017, Fortnite is much older. It entered development seven years ago, in 2011, as a zombie survival game. However, after being released in July of 2017, Fortnite wasn’t performing as well as Epic had hoped. To bolster the player numbers, they introduced a free-to-play battle royale mode that proved immensely popular. 

    What’s more, Epic games created the Unreal Engine, the game engine PUBG runs in. This isn’t contentious in and of itself and is quite typical of the gaming industry. It is, however, an interesting wrinkle.  

    PUBG’s Claims 

    It does seem, however, that the plaintiff has some valid points. Both games feature a large map where 100 players are dropped from an airplane. Those players then scavenge for weapons and attempt to remain alive until they are the last man standing. They have somewhat similar user interfaces, although PUBG tries to appear quite realistic. Fortnite, by contrast, is cartoony and whimsical.  

    The only problem? Battle royale, as a genre, might not be an easy copyright to defend. To wit, PUBG itself is clearly based entirely on Koushun Takami’s 1999 dystopian novel Battle Royale. Takami’s novel quite literally lays the groundwork for the moment-to-moment gameplay of PUBG, down to the random locations of weapons and the ever-shrinking battleground. Any serious attempts by PUBG Corporation to defend their game as a wholly original work are thus a bit humorous.  

    Takami, for his part, has been rather influential in pop culture. The Hunger Games series, for instance, also bore striking resemblances to his novel. Takami himself was rather gracious about the other series’ success, stating “every novel has something to offer.” This leads one to believe he would have a similar attitude with regards to the battle royale video game craze. However, the point still stands: PUBG Corporation accusing someone else of copyright infringement is a bit ironic.

    They are taking over the app store as the next big thing in mobile gaming. They are fun, chaotic, and extremely intense. As with any big gaming trend in the app store once something hits big with popularity the market gets flooded with knock offs and wanna-bes’. So here is a look at the Top 5 battle royale games. I think you know 1 and 2 already. All of them are the same premise 100 players are scattered throughout the massive battlefield. Explore the map, collect weapons, take aim, and pull the trigger.

     

    1 PUBG

    This is the tops, the alpha, the best PVP royale there is. Though it was not first, fortnite was, PUBG was up and going first and once it was there was no stopping it. The game is based on previous mods that were created by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene for other games using the film Battle Royale for inspiration, and expanded into a standalone game under Greene’s creative direction.  Its fun, come find me, callsign:  beaunasty

    2. Fortnite

    Fortnite has recently taking over the top spot in the app store over PUBG in the PVP royale battles. However it is still no. 2 in free games below “love balls”. There is a lot of aspects to this game that should make it number 1 on this list. It’s got way better animation and looks like a lot more fun. It partakes in the unreality of fantasy a bit more for more entertainment. The guns… Did I mention how cool the guns are. Think Ratchet and Klank like guns. You can build structures to defend yourself. Its a lot more immersive and lacks the quick please and excitement of PUBGs simple killem PVP.

    3.Knives out

    This is the big one in japan. So big in Japan that they raked in 24 million from mobile users last month. This game has the potential to top those Battle Royale game one day. I love most of the features included such as Top kills, Farthest Travel etc. It makes me wanna compete with my friends. Bugs, it has them like Sometimes, shooting during scoping doesnt calibrate well with the aiming. It drops a bit bottom-right. It is also very laggy and has glitches like when I walk it teleports me back to where I was. Sometimes I’ll tap the Trigger and it’ll shoot a half a clip without my finger touching the screen.

    4. Rules of Survival

    This one lets you have up to three hundred players fight in a battle royale, a type of large-scale last man standing deathmatch where players fight to remain the last alive. Players can choose to enter the match Solo, Duo, a Squad of four people, or a Fireteam of up to five people. In either case, the last person or team left alive wins the match. There are two playable maps in the game: Ghillie (120 players), and the 64 square kilometer Fearless Fiord (300 players)

    5.Critical Ops

    Just like the rest of list you can pair up with friends or take on complete strangers all over the world. With A 100 player Vs player format and all the trends that have it landing on this list. This one has some very smooth gameplay. All animations are very smooth. Great variety on the skins. Weapons are unique and pretty fantastic. On the positives it’s a fast-paced mobile FPS reminiscent of CS:GO. What has it moving down the list is that there a pretty noticeable latency issues (lag) and very sparse content.

    Beau’s Number 1 App Reveiw: Player Unknown: Battlegrounds PUBG

    Beau’s App series. Each week, I install whatever is the No. 1 bestselling app on the iOS or Android store and review it, to save you the effort in case it’s total waste of life. This week a game called Player Unknown: Battlegrounds, better known as PUBG is in the top spot and Im taking it on. How did it get to No. 1? Because it’s free, because it just came out for phones, and because it’s already crazy popular. Its PC/console versions made PUBG the most-played new video game of 2017.

     

    Lets Start The Battle

    PUBG is a “battle royale” game, meaning that it’s a military-style, free-for-all, fight to the death. It’s extremely similar to its arch-rival, Fortnite: Battle Royale (which is also free, and is currently neck-and-neck with PUBG on the iOS app store [not available yet for Android]).

    At the very start of the game (after choosing the look, gender, race, and screen name for your avatar), you’re in sort of a limbo where you can run around, practice punching and crouching, waiting for 100 players from the internet to accumulate. Once they do, the action cuts to a plane flying high above an island. You choose when to jump out, at which point you skydive, and eventually pop your parachute.

    Just Past the Tutorial

    You explore this island by running around (the “camera” is always behind you) or hopping onto rusty old cars, tanks, or motorcycles. As you go, you find and pick up weapons, protective gear, medical kits, and energy drinks. But be wise: You can carry only so much weight — and you can hold only two guns at a time.

    If you’re in Squad mode, getting shot by the enemy doesn’t necessarily mean Game Over. You’re just wounded at first, and your teammates can help you back to your feet.

    As time goes by, the playing area slowly contracts, forcing players into a tighter space and heightening the action. The walls, in the form of a creepy blue shimmering bubble, slowly close in on you; if you’re caught inside it, you lose Health.

     

    What Makes it Great

    PUBG has elements of a survival game, with a stamina and health bar to maintain through collectables, but a typical match lasts no longer than 30 minutes or so. You start each one with no equipment and have to parachute off a randomly moving plane, so that it’s almost impossible to start any two matches in the same place. The location of loot is also randomised, although obvious hot spots do tend to have better equipment.

    The most interesting thing about PUBG is that it’s a true sandbox game. None of the gameplay mechanics are very complex or unusual, and while the map is well designed it’s really its size that is the greatest benefit. Everything which makes the game fun comes from the simple but inflexible rules, and the knowledge that if you die that’s it – there’s no lives and not even a way to watch the rest of the match unfurl. The tension this creates is incredible, and every player has their own favourite PUBG story. Your first kill is usually a good one (mine was a fist fight that had me running away into another room, and coming back with a crowbar) but the decision on when and how to move away from the safety of a good hiding place is always the most difficult.

     

     

    The Final Thought

    This is the first app review Ive done and Ive had a blast for the last 13 hours playing this game. Truth be told I only just heard about it last week, quickly dismissed it, one try and Im hooked. All I can think about now is that Ive got the good loot where is the bullet that is gonna kill me..
