Wearable tech has long been the holy grail of inventions. From the radio-equipped pith helmet of the 1940s to the disastrous Google Glass (more on that in a moment) we keep trying to strap gadgets to our bodies.

The Bone Fone—which sounds like more like a Goth booty call than anything else—premiered in the late 70s, when hair was feathered, clothes were intensely flammable, and people apparently wanted to wear giant speakers around their necks. The gadget supposedly made sound resonate in your chest and was marketed as a “hip” alternative to headphones. It cost $70 (roughly $250 in today’s money) and it looked like you were wearing a horse collar.
