  • Save Money on Paper Towels

    Save Money on Paper Towels

Paper towels are undoubtedly useful. They serve certain functions that dish clothes don’t. For example, I would rather wipe my mouth with a paper towel than a dish cloth. I don’t like cleaning a toilet with a dish cloth because afterwards, I have this icky cloth I have to contend with. I would rather throw away a used paper towel and be done with it.

However useful, we use far too much. Annually in the U.S., we use more than 13 billion pounds of paper towels, and that number is growing every year. This leads to over 3,000 tons of paper towel waste just in the U.S. alone each year. If each U.S. household used one less 70-sheet roll of paper towels, 554,000 trees could be saved every year. If each U.S. household used three less rolls per year, it would eliminate 120,000 tons of waste.

Discarded paper towels create 254 million tons trash every year globally. By cutting back on paper towel use, you can save money, reduce landfill waste, save trees, and more. Let’s look at some ways to use less and save money on these glorious paper towels.

    Price Compare Like a Champ

Buying paper towels is surprisingly complicated. There are different numbers of rolls in a package and different amounts of square feet on every roll, so the cheapest price may not be the best deal. The best way to determine what to buy is to compare apples to apples based on the price per square foot. To do this, divide the price by the number of square feet listed on the package. So if a 100 square foot package of paper towels is $5, you would divide $5 by 100 and end up with $.05 per square foot.

If you do that with the different packages–the cheapest ones versus the ones on sale, and so on–you will find the lowest price per square foot of paper towel. That is the one to buy.

BUT buying the cheapest brand can backfire. It is true that very cheap paper towels (Walmart’s brand, for example) don’t absorb well, which means you end up using more of them, going through the roll faster, and losing the money you thought you were saving by buying the cheapest price per square foot.

Consumer Reports did an test on paper towels and found that Bounty Extra Soft, Walgreens Ultra Quilted, CVS Big Quilts, Kirkland Signature from Costco (which is what I usually use), and Up & Up from Target had the best absorbency. I generally believe in buying the cheapest roll of paper towels unless a brand has proven itself to be bad.

    Recycle Old Clothes

I have found that cutting up an old cotton tee shirt, sheet or a flannel sheet has worked great at making cheap napkins. I keep them folded in a little basket on the kitchen table so we just pull one out when we need it. If I have company at the table, I break out the good napkins.

When I have bought paper towels on sale with a coupon, I take my serrated knife and cut the roll in half and that gives me twice the towels for one price. Of course, you have watch yourself and not just use more from the halved roll.

    Reduce Use

You may think, “I don’t use too many paper towels” but it’s easy to see how paper towel use can get quickly out of hand if you consider these estimates for a family of four. Use as napkins at meals = 84 sheets per week. Use as hand towel in the bathroom – (4 potty breaks a day x 4 people) = 112 sheets a week. Washing up before meals and before cooking (3 meals a day) = 105 sheets a week. Washing and drying fruits and veggies (assuming you eat them at each meal – which you should) = 63 sheets a week.

Cleaning two bathrooms once a week = 20 sheets a week. Wiping down the kitchen after cooking = 42 sheets a week. That’s 426 paper towel sheets a week (typically 3.5-7 rolls a week – most paper towels have 60-120 sheets per roll) and I haven’t even covered cleaning up spills, pet messes, kid messes, washing hands after baby diaper changes, snacks and more. Paper towel use adds up alarmingly fast.

If you become conscious of your paper towel use, you can easily cut down. Use one sheet to dry your hands, just give them a shake first. Use newspaper to clean windows, it works better anyways.

    The Final Paper Towel Thought

While looking for ways to save money on paper towels, I realized something. There are really only two things you need to do to save money on paper towels… never pay full price. Use fewer paper towels. That’s really all there is to it!

  • Does Your Dog Have Diabetes?

    Does Your Dog Have Diabetes?

Dogs. There’s a reason we call them man’s best friend, you know. We can learn so many things from a dog’s behavior: their personality, demeanor, resiliency and most importantly; the willingness to provide their family members with unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship down to their very last breath.

I treat my dog like my best friend, and we do everything together. I once ordered an Uber to pick up my dog and bring him to work because I missed him so much. I even feed him the human food I eat. So finding out he was overweight and could have diabetes… well, it just about broke my heart.

It turns out that diabetes is becoming frighteningly common in dogs today. One in 300 senior and middle aged dogs are diagnosed with diabetes. And once your dog gets diabetes, he will most likely need insulin for the rest of his life.

So it’s really important to do everything you can to prevent your dog from becoming diabetic. There are many things that can contribute to the risk of your dog getting diabetes, but the good news is that there are also a lot of things you can do to help prevent it from happening and to minimize the risk.

Much like humans, when dogs have diabetes – staying trim is key. If your dog is overweight, losing some pounds can help his cells use insulin better, a hormone that keeps blood sugar levels in check. That makes it easier for his body to turn food into fuel.

The goal for any pooch with diabetes is to keep blood sugar (or glucose) levels as close to normal as possible. This helps your dog feel good and makes it less likely he’ll get diabetes-related complications, such as vision-clouding cataracts and urinary tract infections.

    Dog Diabetes and a Diagnosis

Diabetes is diagnosed by using blood and urine tests. The normal blood sugar (blood glucose) for dogs is 60-125 mg/dl; for cats, 70-150 mg/dl. Diabetes is diagnosed when blood sugars are consistently elevated a significant amount. For example, 220 mg/dl in a dog or 400mg/dl in a cat.

If your pet is anxious when it visits the veterinarian, his or her blood sugar will naturally rise and the elevation may be as high as the sugar levels in a diabetic pet. To prevent this stress-related elevation of blood sugar, find a veterinarian and a clinic that can help calm your pet before they are tested.

Or even better,  find a veterinarian who makes house calls. Keep in mind that one or two blood tests showing elevated blood sugar doesn’t prove that your pet has diabetes. Blood sugar levels must be consistently elevated, or your pet must have urine tests showing ketones in order to prove they have diabetes.

    Symptoms Of Dog Diabetes

Pets with diabetes often look unkempt and act lethargic. Because they lose sugar in the urine, and sugar pulls water molecules out with it, this causes them to urinate excessively. It also causes them to drink excessively. These activities, excessive urination (polyuria) and excessive drinking (polydipsia), are termed PUPD. Pets with diabetes end up losing weight and muscle mass. They may also have a lower body temperature than normal pets.

Additional symptoms of diabetes in dogs can include; excessive drinking and urination, loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration, depression and lethargy, unkempt haircoat and dandruff, loss of muscles and weakness, weight loss, cataracts, and weakness of the back legs.

    Defeat Your Dog’s Diabetes

I have a found and tested a great way to help beat your dog’s diabetes. Dogs are opportunistic carnivores, so while they can eat non-meat foods, they have no real nutritional requirement for carbs, and should avoid starches and grains. Even so, a diet of raw chicken necks and livers, plus broccoli every day can be helpful or them. Dogs don’t typically need broccoli or veggies, but in the case of diabetes it drastically helps. Broccoli is packed full of fresh and wholesome goodness, and organic options are easy to come by.

The chicken will be the larger meal of the day, I use about two pounds daily for my large dog. Skin-on is preferable, as skinless chicken does not have enough fat and would need to be supplemented with something like beef.

In addition to eliminating the chances of diabetes in your pooch, this diet will also have a lot of other great benefits. Potential benefits of the raw dog food diet include shinier coats, healthier skin, cleaner teeth, higher energy levels and smaller stools.

    The Final Thought

The life expectancy of a diabetic dog can be the same as a healthy dog’s life with proper care. With proper treatment, diabetic dogs have survival rates very similar to those of non-diabetic dogs of the same age and gender – though their risk is greatest during the first six months of treatment when insulin therapy is introduced and glucose levels are being regulated.

Diabetic dogs are more likely to die of kidney disease, infections or liver/pancreatic disorders than of diabetes itself. But once their condition stabilizes, diabetic dogs can lead happy, healthy lives.

  • Selecting the Best Seating for Your Home Theater

Selecting the Best Seating for Your Home Theater

So you have finally succeeded in the crowning achievement of mankind: your very own home theater.

I mean, everyone loves watching a great movie on a big screen with a phenomenal speaker system – but few would complain about losing the sticky floors, uncomfortable seats, and kids with smartphones (unless they’re your own kids). Good thing that’s not the world you live in any more, you have your own theater.

You have set it up the JVC DLA-X590R 4k projector, the Stewart StudioTek 130 screen, and the state of the art balanced sounds of ELAC Debut 5.1 System. You even have the vintage popcorn cart in the corner, matched with the vintage framed movie posters hung with care all around your 800 sq feet of glory.  Building the home theater of your dreams doesn’t necessarily mean just assembling a massive theater system – you need to make sure you don’t forget the most important feature.

    The home theater seating.

If you’re watching movies in your home theater whilst sitting on folding chairs, you failed. The most important choice you’ll make is finding the best big screen TV for you, but a close second is choosing the ideal home theater seating.

Home theater seating is important because you want to be able to kick back and be comfortable when you’re enjoying your movies and TV shows, and having the perfect home theater set up can let you do just that.

    First Things First

Measure your current space before you go shopping, and determine how much room you have to work with. Home theater seating is usually large and bulky so that you can have a spacious feeling when seated. Measure your room and walking area that will be needed around your seating. Allow for at least a 18”-24”minimum aisle in the front and in the back of your seating.

Determine how many people you want to accommodate: If you have a large space to accommodate a large amount of people, theater seating with aisles will be a good idea. If your room is smaller, this doesn’t mean you can’t have home theater seating.

An intimate setting of 2-4 chairs arranged around the room would be a viable option for a smaller home theater. Either way, make this decision before choosing your seating so you don’t waste time, money, and your back while trying to move the furniture around!

    Amenities, Spare No Expense

Decide what amenities you’d like, and know that home theater seating has a variety of amenities to choose from! Some of these include storage areas to hold remote controls and miscellaneous items, and chairs that have areas for beverages are convenient, which help guests relax and enjoy themselves.

Recliner chairs can take you from a sitting upright position to a reclining position in an instant. Theater seating can be intermixed to form a variety of seating arrangements. Ottomans or foot stools are perfect for placing feet on and for kids that want to share in on the movie watching!

LED lighting is a great way to improve aesthetics, and the best part is that they are really inexpensive. Plus it helps when you can see your cup holder in the dark. In other words, make sure you spring for the LED lighting.

    My Recommendation

I recommend the Seatcraft Diamante home theater seating with brown top grain leather; power recline, row of 2…  it’s glorious! The Seatcraft is a traditional collection with motion functions. Generously scaled, the Seatcraft features a set-back roll arm accented with a nail-head trim. The scale is emphasized by divided t-back cushions that rest on the top of the arms and full chaise-style seating with generous padding.

Offering luxurious comfort and support, the Diamante blends the comfort of motion seating with classic styling. A commanding collection, the Diamante complements any classic or modern interior. The Diamante collection is available with either a power toggle switch or manual latch that lets you operate the reclining function and change angles with ease. Its grand scale and charming design details make the Diamante a perfect choice for your home theater interiors. See the above picture to fall in love.

The Final Home Theater Seating Thought

What you need is a chair worthy of its own audience, one that will welcome you to enjoy the most luxurious seating ever, built with the most exceptional leathers.  A loveseat that comes in a prestigious leather upholstery, a high grade, quality leather to complement the construction of your chair.

If that wasn’t enough, cool gel foam layers are weaved through, yielding one of the most masterfully crafted chairs yet, making it the finest home theater sectional on the world market today. That is what your shopping goal should be!

  • Your iPhone or Android is About to Cost Even More

Your iPhone or Android is About to Cost Even More

If you complained when phones were free because you were asked to sign a contract, you probably aren’t happy nowadays! We are now at a place where a new iPhone could cost up to $1449. Just when you think phone prices are as outrageous as it could get, Qualcomm says hold my drink…

Rising prices aren’t unusual on their own. Faster, better components like processors and cameras cost more to make. Add in the cost of researching and developing new materials into the final product, and then we have the Trump trade war and inflation to affect the cost of new tech. If all of that weren’t enough, chipmaker Qualcomm is increasing their licensing fee for each new 5G chip.

Qualcomm reported a sharp decline in their quarterly profits, largely due to a reduction in the amount of money they obtain from licensing their patents to other companies. Qualcomm is tweaking their licensing program and will charge handset makers for their 5G intellectual property. Specifically, the company said that they could charge smartphone manufacturers up to $16.25 in royalties for every 5G phone they sell. They also stated they would cap their royalty rates at $500 for the selling price of the phone. This means the manufactures will have to pass on the cost to consumers to help cover this new charge.

iPhone Cost and Why They’re So Expensive

Apple has slowly increased the average price of an iPhone since 2007, but with the $999 iPhone X release last year, it made an even bigger leap than usual. A year later, after the shock value of a thousand dollar smartphone had largely worn off, Apple made yet another jump. The iPhone XS Max, which starts at $1,099 and can cost up to $1,449 for the model with the most memory, makes it the most expensive iPhone ever.

Tim Cook, Apples CEO, does not believe the iPhone is too expensive. He states “The phone has replaced your digital camera. You don’t have a separate one anymore. It’s replaced your video camera. It’s replaced your music player. It’s replaced all of these different devices,” Cook said. “And so arguably the product is really important. And we’ve found that people want to have the most innovative product available and with that, it’s not cheap to do.”

These steadily rising prices across Apple’s portfolio and the mobile category indicate that costlier devices are here to stay . This is our own fault for buying them in mass droves in the first place. We have no one to blame but ourselves!  I don’t regret my own decision, I’ll probably even do it again this September.

Don’t Worry, Androids Mid-Level Phones are Still Affordable

iPhones are expensive, rightfully so, since they are of much higher quality and consistency than some competitors. But, you can only get the iPhone from one manufacturer – Apple. The operating system used in the iPhone, iOS, is a proprietary Apple product. You can’t just get your own copy of iOS and put it on phones and sell it. Tie that in with tight distribution procedures and you have a solid way to control the market. Android does not operate this way, so that makes them cheaper, right? Not really.

Android phones use an operating system that is open-source. Android is actually just another distro of Linux, although it runs some independently-developed software on top of the Linux kernel in place of the GNU userland tools used in desktop Linux. You can even see what kernel version you’re running in the settings of any Android phone. One would think this would help decrease cost to the consumer, but no.

While a lot of different factors are creeping prices higher, some revolutionary tech advancements will only add to these still-rising costs. Android will have its own price increase issues in the near future. As Android phone makers struggle against premium priced components like more robust chipsets and unfathomable cameras, they’re also anticipating new designs.  These include 5G and foldable designs that are crucial to helping their brands stand out in a over-saturated and mundane line-up.

Making newer cutting edge phones in 2019 is getting even more expensive. The 5G phones and foldable designs seen in the upcoming “Galaxy X” will be a whole new ball game, and ball games are never cheap.

SmartPhones Will Be a Major Expense Over Your Children’s Lifetime

Kids are getting their first smartphone at the average age of 11 in today’s world. Assuming the average cost of a smartphone stays the same, with the average amount spent per year in the U.S. on cellphones, and the average  upgrade every 32 months, things will only get more expensive.

Factoring in the typical smartphone costs and usage patterns, your children will end up spending a staggering $75,000 apiece on their phones over the course of their lives. Mind Boggling!

  • Is It Time To Replace That Old Furnace?

Is It Time To Replace That Old Furnace?

Winter north of the Mason-Dixon line area can bring unpredictable weather. From cold, rainy fall days to snowstorms, having reliable heat in the colder months is demonstratively obligatory. Now is the time to ensure that your gas furnace can get you through the winter and keep your home warm and toasty.

Furnaces are one of the most important pieces of equipment in your home. Having a furnace go out unexpectedly is one of the most stressful situations a homeowner can face. You can’t let this happen in the dead of winter.  It’s important to keep track of how efficiently and effectively your natural gas furnace is running. Furnaces give certain telltale signs that they are failing.

By keeping an eye out for the main signs, you can be prepared for a furnace repair or replacement.  In addition, being prepared will allow you to do research on new high-efficiency natural gas furnaces before the time comes to replace your unit. High-efficient natural gas furnaces operate at up to 98% efficiency, far greater efficiency than older furnaces. Let’s talk about 5 sure fire signs it is time to replace your furnace.

    Higher than Expected Energy Bills

Energy bills are higher despite usage staying the same. Furnaces that have become inefficient have to work harder to provide proper heating, resulting in more expensive heating bills. Consider spending the money to replace your furnace and enjoy the benefits of a reduced bill during the life of your new appliance.

If your furnace is operating with little to no maintenance issues, but you’re noticing a higher utility rate and you’d like to get your bills down, there may be some lower cost solutions for you. Some alternative options may be updating your thermostat to a programmable one, cleaning or updating your duct system, purchasing an electric fireplace or portable heater, or just adding some extra blankets around the house. Or just bite the bullet and replace the furnace, it is only a matter of time.

Your furnace is more than 15 years old.

If your furnace is past its 15-year mark and beginning to have maintenance issues, there is a very good chance it will need to be replaced. It may be working, but it is likely not operating at maximum efficiency and your utility bills are probably at all time high as a result.

Furnaces are like cars; the older they are, the more maintenance they need, usually incurring the most breakdowns in the last two years of their lives. If your furnace is roughly 15 to 20 years or older and you have a repair costing more than 15 percent of a new furnace, you should go ahead and replace it (because it is more likely to break down again soon).

Generally speaking, a good rule of thumb is, no matter the age of the furnace, if the cost to repair is 50 percent or more of the cost of a new furnace, you should replace it.

The Rooms Throughout Your Home are Different Temperatures

Do you feel that some rooms are too cold while others are too hot? Or are you always trying to adjust your thermostat to make your home more comfortable? This is a sign that your furnace lacks the ability to properly distribute the air to keep you comfortable in your home.

An inefficient and old furnace can result in some rooms being colder or warmer than others. This is likely the result of an old furnace and outdated duct system losing its ability to distribute heat evenly throughout the house.

The Burner Flame is Yellow Or Making Strange Noises

A yellow or flickering flame may be a sign that poisonous carbon monoxide could be created by your furnace. The Flame should be blue. Other possible signs of carbon monoxide are:

    • Streaks of soot around furnace.
    • Absence of an upward draft in your chimney.
    • Excess moisture found on windows, walls, or other cold surfaces.
    • Excessive rusting on flue pipes, other pipe connections, or appliance jacks.
    • Small amount of water leaking from the base of the chimney, vent, or flue pipe.
    • Rust on the portion of the vent pipe visible from the outside.

All of these could signal the yellow flame and all of these will cause you to replace your furnace.

Now the noise. Whats is that noise? Old furnaces often start to make some strange noises as they get toward the end of their life. Have you heard any banging, popping, rattling, or squealing noises coming from your furnace? Another noise too lookout for is when you hear the furnace blower running excessively. Does your blower turn on and off frequently or does it blow cold air sometimes? If so, this is a sign that your furnace may need to be replaced.

Is Your House Dry or Dusty?

Old furnaces often lack the ability to moisturize and clean the air in your home. The air may feel stuffy or stale. Does anyone in your family suffer from allergies to airborne dust, mold, pollen, viruses or dander? Or does anyone suffer from dry nose, dry throat, or dry skin? Other signs may be frequent dust accumulation, static shocks, drooping plants, furniture cracking and musical instruments that do not stay in tune. These signs all suggest that your old furnace is not capable of providing you with the comfort you and your family may want.

If your heating system does not provide adequate moisture or clean air in your house, it may be a sign to replace your home heating system. Excessive dryness affects the walls, furniture and the plants in your house. Also, this extreme dryness can cause problems for you and your family, especially if anyone has the allergies we mentioned above. So, when you see the walls peeling or your plants drooping, it’s probably time to get a new furnace.

    In Summary

The real takeaway here should be that the winter is going to be cold, it’s going to be dark and it’ll happen every year, so get a new furnace. The general rule of thumb is that if the cost of maintenance or repair of your furnace is more than 50% of the cost of a new one, just replace it.

  • Top Ways You Can Push Yourself In 2019

Top Ways You Can Push Yourself In 2019

A New Year is once again upon us. This quote by Melody Beattie comes to mind; “The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.”

Yes, 2019 is going to be a great year for us all, and this year’s resolutions will be more than just a wish.

Making an annual list of New Year’s resolutions is a venerable tradition. By some accounts, it dates back to the ancient Romans, who customarily made a show of promising the god Janus that they would behave better over the next 12 months than they had in the past year. But while Janus was the patron deity of new beginnings, hence why January starts off our year, he also provided a convenient excuse. If a citizen of Rome didn’t actually follow through with his various self-improvement vows, he could always shrug it off by explaining that it was Janus’ will. Then, presumably, he could just go on gorging himself at banquets or betting excessively on gladiator fights.

Sounds familiar? Have you been shrugging off your new year’s resolutions too? Throwing away each years clean slate and prime opportunity for personal growth?  Me too. Lets talk about some ways we can push ourselves to achieve the goals we set for ourselves in 2019.

    Make Your Bed Every Morning

Excuses are easy, but when it comes right down to it, it’s also easy to make your bed each morning. If you make your bed in the morning, that means you’re telling yourself that you won’t be getting back into it for the rest of the day. The day has begun and you will conquer any and all tasks before you, starting with making that bed. It might be a small accomplishment, but making the bed sets the tone for the entire day.

In a 2014 commencement speech at University of Texas at Austin, Admiral McRaven said: “If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. “By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter.”

Sometimes being an adult is hard. Sometimes going into work every day is hard. Sometimes, I come home from the office and question if I accomplished anything at all. But at least I made my bed! Starting every day off with a mini victory can do a tremendous amount for your psyche.

    Start a Morning Run Streak

Running in the mornings helps you to remove yourself from the daily challenges of life and gives you time to focus on the bigger picture. Running is great, but streak running is a whole different animal. Streak running creates a psychological bond to the act of running and ‘maintaining the streak.’ Once you cross 50, 100 or 1,000 days straight of any activity, you are much less likely to decide that today is the day you are going to quit. But what happens when you do end the streak? Start over and try to beat the last streak.

    Plan to Prepare

We often miss opportunities to be our best and make the most of our time with others because we didn’t find time to prepare. Granted, most of us  are pretty good at winging it, but we can be much more effective when we deliberately set aside time to prepare for our next goal, accomplishment or achievement. It’s not easy to find extra time in the day, so rather than hoping you’ll find the time you need when you need it, block in the time you want for prep on your calendar.

Schedule 15 minutes to review objectives. Block an hour immediately when the motivation to grow hits you just to clear your mind and rehearse. Carve out as many hours as you need to create and practice the plan.

    Stop Making Excuses

If you are looking for a reason not to do the thing you should do, you will surely find it. Part of taking ownership of your life and reflecting how you got to an unhappy state is to understand how you are enabling your poor decisions. It is usually with excuses, like you’re tired, or you don’t have time when you’re not making time, you will do it tomorrow, etc. Stop making excuses, and start owning your life and pushing yourself to do the work.

Happiness doesn’t fall into your lap, it takes work like everything else. So get out of your own way and stop making excuses.

    You Are Not a Victim

You are not a victim of every whim and circumstance, and you do have some control over your life at any given time. It is about how you wield that control that determines whether you can change your life. Stop resisting responsibility for your life, because the sooner you take ownership of it and stop blaming others, you will have more autonomy and you will start making progress.

At the end of the day we are accountable to ourselves , our success and failures is a result of what we do. Blaming, whining, deflecting accountability, risk aversion, and resistance to change are symptoms of the adversity-beaten individual. Uncontrollably bad things happen to all of us all the time, but we can control how we react to them.  When we fully commit to having responsibility in any process, we begin to integrate external tactical support and our own internal capabilities, and develop a sense of control for the results.

    The Final Thought

Every state in this fine union is a marvel unto itself. While we highlighted some of the top attractions in each state, there is so much more to see and do. I didn’t even get to mention Venice beach, Niagara Falls, Kilauea, Kennedy Space Center, Ellis Island, Disney, Denali or the Florida Keys. It would take a life time to take in all that America has to show you. Start with your  own state, and take it from there.

From National Parks and monuments, museums, thrills and theme parks, I can promise you there is so much more to see in your backyard than you ever thought. Try being a tourist in your own state, check out the local tourist attractions, and you may just find a new appreciation for the place you call home.

  • Affordable Ways to See a Broadway Show

Affordable Ways to See a Broadway Show

Who doesn’t love a great live show? The songs, dance, pageantry and costumes are so very amazing, and we all love a good, or even average musical. Getting all dressed up and walking down 7th ave can be a glorious experience. There’s no shortage of enticing Broadway or Off-Broadway shows these days, but the steady rise in ticket prices has made it harder for theater lovers to take advantage of what New York stages have to offer. Broadway tickets aren’t necessarily cheap, but when you compare them to other forms of live entertainment, they are very clearly a bargain.

The prices may seem daunting and unreasonable, and may even discourage you from attempting to see an acclaimed play. Don’t fear!  Discount Broadway tickets are everywhere, and modern technology makes it easier than ever to find cheap seats. From lotteries to apps, let me teach you how to find the most affordable ways to see a Broadway show.

    Lotteries

You know how a lottery works already; you submit your name and pray that it gets drawn. There are two types of lotteries: in-person and digital. For in-person lotteries, you show up about two hours before the start of the show and put your name in a bucket. If your name is drawn and you’re present, you then claim your tickets. It’s that simple.  Digital lotteries are offered by the shows themselves or via an app.

A digital lottery is your best chance to see the very popular “Hamilton” for cheap, like $10 tickets kind of cheap. Also “Hamilton” just made it even easier to see, as the show recently began offering double the number of $10 seats for each performance. I found Show-score.com keeps an updated list of digital lotteries. Try your luck, and let us know in the comments below if you happen to win!

    Broadway Roulette

One of the newest ways to get cheap Broadway tickets is through Broadway Roulette. This is an easy way to get a last-minute deal, but you must be open and flexible to what you are seeing. You and your child pick the day and time and describe to the team at Broadway Roulette what kind of shows you like and don’t like.

On the morning of the show, Broadway Roulette lets you know what you are seeing. The beauty is that all tickets are just $49 to 59 and picking up tickets is simple.

    Same-day Broadway Discount tickets?

Last minute? Want to catch a show before you leave NYC? Try this: there are three TKTS Booths. Two in Manhattan (one in Times Square and another downtown near the South Street Seaport) and one in Brooklyn that offer discount Broadway tickets. Matinee tickets are available the day before at the downtown and Brooklyn locations, but same-day tickets are available at the Times Square booth.

Pick Cheap Broadway Tickets Without Reducing The View

Of course the best seats in the house are the most expensive, because everyone wants to be located center orchestra. But these are never the cheapest – most Broadway shows are actually charging extra for them, making them much more expensive that a regular orchestra seat. The cheap Broadway ticket solution is to choose the seats that are in the transition area (i.e. the $110 seats that are located next to the $250 seats).

All that is required is a little bit of study of the seating map; some shows will even show you a map of the pricing . Ticket brokers do this everyday to get the cheapest tickets in the best location so that they can resell them for a higher amount.

    Try Off-Broadway

New York City is home to some of the best non-Broadway options in the world, and there are theater companies dedicated to working for children and families. Check out and consider joining theaters such as the New Victory Theater and the Vital Theatre Company for discount Broadway ticket options.

Note: any off-Broadway production in NYC is still better than your hometown’s best theater.  Don’t let the stigma stop you from catching a surprisingly brilliant show.

Rush Lines and Standing Room Only

Rush lines shows generally release day-of-performance tickets as soon as the box office opens. Prices vary by production, but if you’re willing to wake up early and stand in line at the theater, tickets can be under $50 each. Not too bad. You can also try standing room only. Typically, when a Broadway show is sold out, the box office sells discounted standing room “seats”.  These standing positions are usually located at the back of the orchestra.

    The Final Thought

There is always a way to get into whatever show you want to see. The question is how much do you want to see this show, and how far are you willing to work towards procuring a ticket? Priorities people!  Let everyone fight over Hamilton and Aladdin tickets, while you go see Beautiful, or Dear Evan Hansen.

  • Educational Trips that Won’t Bore the Kids

Educational Trips that Won’t Bore the Kids

Kids are on Christmas break and are getting bored. What to do to entertain and enrich their little lives? Educational trips. Whether they’re a history buff or a drama queen, an animal lover or a budding chef, enriching travel experiences adds a learning component for a vacation truly worth remembering. Help your little ones gain new insights and new interests by embarking on these ten best children’s educational trips in the United States.

    Washington, D.C.

When it comes to American history, our nation’s capital has it all. You can’t stop learning brilliant and exciting things about everything in D.C. It is almost like Aristotle himself designed a city. With D.C.’s bounty of museums and monuments, it is an obvious choice for an educational family vacation, especially with the Smithsonian Museums and the popular National Museum of Natural History. These are as good as it gets for knowledge-building with little ones. As my little one said on our way to the Air and Space Smithsonian… “Ain’t no air in space!”

From memorials, to the Capitol building, Arlington, and the museums, it will blow your children’s minds. You can even take a short day trip to Williamsburg for the colonial experience. Step into the 18th century at Colonial Williamsburg and sign up for the Continental Army, play colonial games, attend a grand ball, or even meet some of our Founding Fathers in person. The boulders of Gettysburg’s Devil’s Den, which once served as a battlefield site for sharpshooters now also double as a natural playground for visitors. There’s even a living-history museum full of buildings dating back to the 17th century and lively volunteers who reenact what life was really like in the era. No better educational trip than on to D.C.

Plus, each year on select dates from late May to late August, kids can go with a parent to the National Museum of American History for a sleepover with the Smithsonian Sleepovers program. Imagine having a PJ party while doing crafts, projects, catching an IMAX film, and sleeping under Phoenix the whale in the Ocean Hall. Guests can also take part in solving a mystery or becoming a presidential candidate! Just bring along a sleeping bag, a toothbrush and a keen sense of adventure.

    National Parks

The Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Parks are at the top of the list to visit with your kids. The natural wonders of both are too fantastic to miss and should be seen first by young eyes. Adventures riding donkeys to the base of the Grand Canyon can be treacherous and frightening. At the same time can be enlightening as you take in the enormity of the space. Yellowstone is an amazing sight to behold.

There are over 10,000 geothermal features and over 300 geysers including Old Faithful. Take a tour or teach your kids about the earth’s crust and how volcanoes work as you explore the park’s wildlife.

    San Diego Zoo

Home to over 3,700 rare and endangered species, the San Diego Zoo is a world-class interactive wildlife park for animals. From Amur leopards, Chinese alligators, and the ever-favorite African animals to endangered species such as giant pandas, Malayan tigers, and the Mang Mountain Viper. The San Diego Zoo has an impressive collection of wildlife.

Not only does this zoo have an amazing array of animals, they also have dozens of activities and programs for children and adults. Sign up for early mornings with the pandas, have breakfast with the koalas, or take a private VIP tour of the park and even see off-exhibit areas.

    Kennedy Space Center

Orlando is the kid fun capital of the world. It is home to Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney World. Never-ending theme parks and elaborate attractions. While all that fun is great, educational fun is even better. For this,  Orlando gives you the Kennedy Space Center. Like dinosaurs, space is a natural fascination for children young and old. It only makes sense for those with the inclination to visit the best space centers in the country. Kennedy Space Center is located near Orlando, Florida.

It is open for tours, lectures, exhibits, and displays, with interactive hands-on activities for kids with an added interest. Kennedy Space & Rocket Center is home to one of the largest collections of rockets and space memorabilia in the world as well as the famous Space Camp.

Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is the U.S. launch site that has been used for every NASA human space flight since December 1968.  The main Visitor Center is an expansive complex that resembles a modern-day amusement park.

It’s attractions feature an Early Space Exploration exhibit, Rocket Garden, children’s playspace, 2 IMAX shows, an Astronaut Hall of Fame and Astronaut Memorial, the popular (with the younger set) Angry Birds hands-on exhibit, multiple cafes, gift shops, and much more. A bus tour will take you outside the Visitor Center to catch views of the legendary launch pads and up to the Apollo/ Saturn V center.

If you time your trip right , you could even see one of the greatest sights a kid can ever see – a rocket being launched into space. Truly a bucket-list worthy sight!

  • The Secrets To Getting Better Gas Mileage

The Secrets To Getting Better Gas Mileage

Holidays are a prime time to travel. You have time off work and family and friends are anxiously excited at the chance to see you. Its a great time for a road trip. What about the gas? Although gas is much cheaper this Christmas season, they’re still not giving it away. So it pays to improve your mileage the best you can, especially if you can do it for little or no money.

No matter what kind of car you drive, you can be getting better fuel economy than what you’re getting now. Did you know you can get better mileage by never filling up your tank? Lets take a look at a few other ways to improve your gas mileage.

    Mileage… Keep Track

Knowing what your consumption looks like from tank-to-tank is important, but that’s really not enough. Knowing what mileage you’re getting in real time–being able to compare it to what you got yesterday or even 10 minutes ago, is the new way to drive these days. Get an app or go the ecomodding way and add a scangauge to track mileage.

Luckily, ecomodding combines the love of saving money and adding gadgets to your car. People with cars made after 1995 have it relatively easy: All you need to do is throw some money at a fuel-economy computer like the Scangauge, and you’re instantly instrumented. For older cars, you may need to get your knuckles dirty by installing a vacuum gauge, which measures how hard the engine is working, or explore the growing world of DIY fuel-economy electronics, like the arduino-based MPGuino. Either way, a conscious mind combined with instant feedback should get you that instant 10 percent.

Most passenger vehicles require unleaded fuel with an 87 octane level, but always check your owner’s manual or gas cap for your vehicle’s requirements. A higher octane fuel will not benefit a car that is built to run with a lower level octane level and could add up to more than $100 per year in additional costs.

Change Fluids and Maintain Steady Speed

Make sure to get your oil changed, it does lower your gas mileage. And, although it doesn’t affect gas mileage, you might as well top off your coolant while you’re at it, to beat the heat. At the same time studies show that the more erratic your is driving, the more gas it burns – up to 37% more! Keep your driving consistent and steady. Drive proactively. Rapid acceleration and hard braking can lower your mileage by up to 37%. Look at the road ahead, and try to use your brake and gas pedals as little as possible. However, you may be surprised to hear that cruise control isn’t necessarily the answer. That’s because the terrain varies, which affects how hard your engine will accelerate.

Don’t idle. When you’re sitting still, you get zero mph. Duh, you say, until they realized that turning off an engine rather than idling could increase overall fuel efficiency up to 19 percent. Consumer Reports suggests turning off your car if you’re going to be stopped for more than 30 seconds. As for taxing your starter? They say it won’t hurt it.

Keep Your Tire Pressure Spot On

One of the biggest areas in which manufacturers compromise fuel economy for comfort is in tire pressure. That 32-psi rating is mainly there to make the ride smooth as silk, even as you run over potholes and pedestrians. It can be controversial, but believe it: To get the best mileage out of your car, up the pressure to the maximum listed on the sidewall. The ride will get a bit rougher, but your rolling resistance will be reduced and you’ll get better gas mileage.

We know we’ve covered the importance of having properly inflated tires before. But it really is that important. For every tire under-inflated by 2 pounds per square inch (psi), fuel consumption increases by 1%. Try to check your tire pressure every couple of weeks to ensure you have the optimal rolling resistance. Also don’t just do it once and forget about it! Make sure to check your tire pressure every other time you fill up, or you could be leaking air and losing MPGs. Another option is to invest in low rolling resistance tires. They can add 1-2 miles per gallon. Look for highly rated tires that provide reliable traction.

    The Final Gas Mileage Thought

While most tips sprout from a kernel of truth, many produce so little effect they’re not worth considering. On the other side if you can improve 2 miles per gallon, that’s an extra $5 per tank in your pocket.
