Cyber Monday 2018: Are You Missing Out on the Best Savings?

Cyber Monday isn’t just for Black Friday leftovers. Every year, Black Friday gets a ton of attention for being the best time to save on holiday shopping. However, some of the best deals you can find come courtesy of Cyber Monday! The Monday after Black Friday is a fantastic day of online deals and it can be so easy to forget the online phenomenon.

The deals don’t just suddenly end with the passing of Black Friday, and your excitement about them doesn’t have to either. Cyber Monday is filled with great savings and sales, without the lines and occasional negativity that come with Black Friday. If you’re looking to do all of your shopping online rather than in stores this year, make sure to bookmark the latest offers all week. We will be scouring the depths of the web to bring you the best of Cyber Monday.

    Cyber Monday 2018

This year, Cyber Monday is November 26th. Most online retailers offer their best deals from Monday through Friday, though not everyone does this. Keep your eyes peeled for great deals! For what it’s worth, many retailers have largely begun to conflate Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals as online retail has become more lucrative.

Cyber Monday has historically been a single day of online deals, but since online shopping has become so huge in recent years, this shopping holiday has become more of a shopping holi-week. You can expect to see many of the same deals on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday that you will see on Monday.

Some advertisers have started referring to this phenomenon as Cyber Week, but not everyone has adopted this new model for the holiday season. Here are some examples of deals you might see on Cyber Monday from top retailers!

    Amazon
Best For: Gaming and toys, smart home, and almost anything else you can buy online.

While plenty of other retailers offer Cyber Monday sales, none of them match Amazon’s. Last year, we saw three times as many Cyber Monday deals at Amazon as the next highest retailer.

Amazon also has a large number of Black Friday deals on their Fire tablets, Fire TV Stick and Echo devices, among other things. Expect these huge discounts to continue during Cyber Monday and Cyber Week. There will likely also be Lightning Deals all throughout the week that you can save a ton on, so stay posted!

    Walmart
Best For: Parents (and kids, too) and homeowners.

Like Walmart’s sprawling stores, you’ll find sales on just about every product category on Cyber Monday. There were also steals on more practical purchases for parents, including car seats and children’s bedroom sets, as well as household necessities.

Walmart will be offering sales on a number of things to compete with Amazon’s line. Items like Google Home, 4K TVs and the like will all be discounted through their website. Also, expect to see discounts on home appliances like microwaves, toasters and the like. This is a great opportunity for buying gifts for new homeowners, or just updating your own home!

    Target
Best For: The hottest Cyber Monday TV sales.

Two-thirds of Target’s Cyber Monday sales last year were the best bargains on televisions anywhere. Last year’s sales saw fantastic prices on sets ranging from 40″ to 80″, but the best prices were on high-end 70″ and 80″ 4K sets, some of which hit the lowest prices we’d ever seen on TVs in that class.

Target will have similar sales to Walmart and will likely be selling things at a similar price. We recommend double-checking against Walmart when shopping Target to make sure you find the best deals. Target also has a wide range of electronics you can expect to see on sale, which are the hot-ticket items this time of year!

    Best Buy
Best For: Electronics of all kinds.

Last year, Best Buy didn’t offer a ton of Cyber Monday sales, but the majority of them were stellar. Look for bargains on home security items and last-generation smartphones — last year’s sales offered the lowest price on the iPhone 7 we’d ever seen. Expect some excellent TV sales, too.

Expect to also see discounts on high-end PC gear like gaming keyboards and mice. Chairs for computer gaming are also likely to be discounted at a great rate! Consider checking Best Buy if you’re looking for electronics that Target and Walmart don’t usually sell.

  • Is Your Basement Trapping Moisture? Here’s how to Dry a Damp Basement

Is Your Basement Trapping Moisture? Here’s how to Dry a Damp Basement

Depending on where you live, basement humidity might be a serious issue for you. A damp basement can seriously affect the value of your home and can even result in structural damage. Fighting this humidity can be quite the uphill battle. If you’re at your wit’s end with a damp basement, here’s some tips for trying to dry it out!

How to Dry out a Damp Basement

    Ventilate Well

Make sure the basement is well-ventilated! Still, stagnate air is ideal for moisture to accumulate. Dark, still and quiet areas are also prime real estate for mold growth. The last thing you want in your house is mold! On a dry day, open doors or basement windows and put fans in the basement. Get that air circulating! Move it the heck out of your basement! Pair this with things like a dehumidifier to make sure you’re really drying the place out.

    Dehumidifier

A straightforward solution might just be to run a dehumidifier in your basement. A lot of folks overthink their damp basement problems and don’t think about this incredibly straightforward and cost-effective solution. For around $200, a dehumidifier alone might just solve your entire problem.

Just set up a medium-sized dehumidifier in the basement and let it run. These are a great idea for a number of reasons. For one thing, they can keep moisture buildup from resulting in dangerous puddles. For another, they can also reduce the growth of mold, which loves dark, moist areas. This means that running a dehumidifier can do wonders for your health!

    Reseal and Plug Leaks

The concrete in your basement may need resealing if a dehumidifier alone can’t solve your problem. If this is the case, don’t panic.  If you’re noticing a lot of condensation through the concrete walls or floor of your basement, you can address the problem by resealing the concrete. You can go to any hardware store and find concrete paint and sealer. There are varieties for both walls and floors, so make sure you get the one that addresses your specific issues.

While you’re resealing your concrete, make sure you address any potential leaks too. Things like basement windows, openings for your dryer to vent heat and the like can be entryways for a lot of moisture. This is especially true in rainy regions or during wet times of the year. Make sure to seal these areas well with silicone seals or weather strips. Then, make sure you run a dehumidifier and ventilate the area well.

Address Any Issues with your Gutters

If your gutters have spouts that let out close to your foundation, they could be pouring water into your basement. This can ruin even the best weather-treatment or sealing. To remedy this, make sure the spouts from your gutters let out at least four feet from your home. Additionally, make sure that the water that leaves the spout runs downhill away from your home. It won’t do any good to just have it roll back into your house!

This is better for you home in general, too, not just your basement. The erosion this can cause around your foundation is pretty severe. The value of a home with a compromised foundation is negligible compared to one with a solid foundation! This should be high on your list of considerations if you have gutters that let out near your home.

    Air Out Wet Items Outside

If you’ve got wet items from the basement flooding or just general dampness, take them out of the basement. It might seem like a good place to air them out but think about it. If you’re trying to dry the basement out, you really don’t need to have damp items airing out. That’s just going to work against all the hard work you’re doing trying to dry the place!

Instead, take things like wet suitcases or furniture outside to a patio or deck. That way, they’re exposed to open air and sunlight and will dry out much faster. This also ensures that your home isn’t exposed to even more moisture! If the items you’re drying can’t go outside, consider drying them in the garage or a bedroom that is well ventilated.

  • Is Your Home Ready for Winter? Don’t Miss Our Checklist

Is Your Home Ready for Winter? Don’t Miss Our Checklist

Winter is coming, and you don’t want to be caught flat-footed! Take steps now to make sure your home is ready for Winter. The last thing you want is to be stuck with a broken heating unit or frozen water pipes in the middle of the season!

Make Sure Your Home is Ready for Winter

    Get Your Heating System Checked

This is an easy step that could save you a ton of trouble down the line. Get an HVAC technician to come out and double-check your system. They will be able to make sure everything is clean and in good condition. These “tune-up” style services generally cost around $90 or so. They could potentially save your hundreds or thousands of dollars if a technician identifies a problem before it gets bad.

The other huge upside to being proactive, instead of reactive, is ensuring your home will be comfortable and safe all winter. If your heating system fails in the middle of the coldest night of the year, you’re not going to be very happy. You’ll also be near the back of the line for repairs, as everyone else in town is having the overworked repairman come to fix their heat. Don’t get stuck shivering in the middle of Winter!

    Check Your Roof

Make sure that your roof is ready for winter, too. If you can see to your roof, look for any missing or damaged shingles. If you can’t see it from the ground level, get a professional roofing company to come inspect it for you. We advise you don’t go up there yourself, as it could be dangerous!

A professional roofing company can tell you whether any shingles are damaged or missing. Then, they can offer you a quote for repairs. You’d much rather have them be proactive and replace it before winter storms and snow cause leaks into your attic! That kind of damage can be very hard to reverse.

    While You’re Up There…

Make sure your gutters are clean and clear. If you don’t have covered gutters, this is a major concern. A lot of leaves and other detritus blocking your gutters can be a major problem in Winter. These blockages can cause major water backup, which is awful for your house and gutters alike. You can even have ice dams form in your gutters from these types of backup.

If you have covered gutters, however, you should be okay! Just have them check to make sure there’s no blockages in there. Ice dams can still form in covered gutters, even though they’re much less likely. You just want to make sure everything is clean and snow and rain has a place to go!

Another important note about gutters: make sure they divert water at least three feet from the foundation. If they don’t, you could get some serious erosion around the base of your house.

    General Winter-Proofing

If your home doesn’t have cold-proof outdoor faucets, make sure you shut them off from the main valve in your home. Then, turn them on from the outside and let the excess water flow out of them. That way the water doesn’t freeze in the pipes and burst them! The same goes for any sprinkles or irrigation systems you might have.

If you plan on using your chimney at all this season, make sure you call in a chimney sweep, too! You don’t want to accidentally cause a house fire by setting some detritus ablaze! If you follow these easy tips, your home should be ready for winter!

High Ceilings? Run Your Fans Backwards

If you have very high, vault-style ceilings, you’ve likely learned the hard way that heat rises. Homes with vaulted ceilings and hardwood floors have notoriously cold floors in the winter. The best way to deal with this issue is to reverse the flow of your ceiling fans. If your fan has a reverse option, turn it on and let it run backwards. This will create an updraft, pulling the cold air off of the floor and displacing the hot air near the ceiling.

This turning of air makes your rooms feel more comfortable and can also help your power bill. By having your ceiling fans keep hot air well-distributed, your home will be more comfortable. This will let you keep your heating system a little lower and stay comfortable in your own home!
