  • Tech Throwback: The T-Mobile Sidekick

    Tech Throwback: The T-Mobile Sidekick

I like to take a look at where I’ve been to evaluate where Im going. Technology is cyclical after all… wait no its not. That said I still like all the feels that come rushing back like a flood of nostalgia every time I get my hand on the tech I grew up with. Im going to go back periodically and take a looking at the stuff that used to blow our hair back and get our minds rolling. Some of these device blew up and changed the world, some where ahead of their time and some just fell flat and became colossal failures. Today I’ve got my hands on the T-Mobile Sidekick

The Danger Hiptop, also re-branded as the T-Mobile Sidekick, Mobiflip and Sharp Jump is a GPRS/EDGE/UMTS smartphone produced by Danger Incorporated  from 2002 to 2010. Released on October 1, 2002, the original Hiptop was unique compared to all other hardware versions. All the units, from the beginning, have featured “Menu”, “Back”, “Jump” and other keys accessible even when the unit was closed. The Hiptop also featured a speaker which is used for device sounds but not telephone. Along the top edge of the phone bezel is an infrared transceiver. The headset jack serves a dual purpose, as it is also used for the accessory camera. A later revision of the Hiptop upgraded its screen from a monochrome LCD to a color LCD viewable with or without the backlight on

Powering Back Up the T-mobile Sidekick

Like I like to do I purchased one of the original T-mobile Sidekick. First thing I notice is how thick it is. It is girthy to say the least, its like holding 3 iPhones. The flip screen is still snappy. This was a one of a kind phone, no one else even mocked it. The spinning rotating screen is still unique with its 180 degree flip to reveal the key board. The keyboard is nice and very well spaced out. For text messaging this phone was way ahead of its time and is still probably the best and most efficient SMS device.

This phone is the original basic smartphone. It has still an advanced for the time but basic phone OS. The best way to describe it is to say its very PDAish but with a killer keyboard. The picture quality, let talk about it, its rubbish. black and white and grainy. Im actually terrified that some hipster will find one of these and turn it in to the next hipster camera trend. Posting terrible pictures is just the kind of thing that is up their ally.

    The Final Thought

I never had the Sidekick, it was a T-mobile exclusive and I was a Cingular guy. This was the most experience I had with the sidekick. I can say it is interesting, fun, quirky, qwerty and perfect for its time. Its success was limited to the T-mobile network which was not great. Many other instances of the T-mobile Sidekick was released in subsequent years, some of them didn’t even kick out.  The last thing Ill say about this device is just like its most famous users, Hanna Montana and Paris Hilton, it belongs in 2003. Lets leave it right there.

  • Top 5 Battle Royale Games on iOS

Top 5 Battle Royale Games on iOS

They are taking over the app store as the next big thing in mobile gaming. They are fun, chaotic, and extremely intense. As with any big gaming trend in the app store once something hits big with popularity the market gets flooded with knock offs and wanna-bes’. So here is a look at the Top 5 battle royale games. I think you know 1 and 2 already. All of them are the same premise 100 players are scattered throughout the massive battlefield. Explore the map, collect weapons, take aim, and pull the trigger.

    1 PUBG

This is the tops, the alpha, the best PVP royale there is. Though it was not first, fortnite was, PUBG was up and going first and once it was there was no stopping it. The game is based on previous mods that were created by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene for other games using the film Battle Royale for inspiration, and expanded into a standalone game under Greene’s creative direction.  Its fun, come find me, callsign:  beaunasty

    2. Fortnite

Fortnite has recently taking over the top spot in the app store over PUBG in the PVP royale battles. However it is still no. 2 in free games below “love balls”. There is a lot of aspects to this game that should make it number 1 on this list. It’s got way better animation and looks like a lot more fun. It partakes in the unreality of fantasy a bit more for more entertainment. The guns… Did I mention how cool the guns are. Think Ratchet and Klank like guns. You can build structures to defend yourself. Its a lot more immersive and lacks the quick please and excitement of PUBGs simple killem PVP.

    3.Knives out

This is the big one in japan. So big in Japan that they raked in 24 million from mobile users last month. This game has the potential to top those Battle Royale game one day. I love most of the features included such as Top kills, Farthest Travel etc. It makes me wanna compete with my friends. Bugs, it has them like Sometimes, shooting during scoping doesnt calibrate well with the aiming. It drops a bit bottom-right. It is also very laggy and has glitches like when I walk it teleports me back to where I was. Sometimes I’ll tap the Trigger and it’ll shoot a half a clip without my finger touching the screen.

    4. Rules of Survival

This one lets you have up to three hundred players fight in a battle royale, a type of large-scale last man standing deathmatch where players fight to remain the last alive. Players can choose to enter the match Solo, Duo, a Squad of four people, or a Fireteam of up to five people. In either case, the last person or team left alive wins the match. There are two playable maps in the game: Ghillie (120 players), and the 64 square kilometer Fearless Fiord (300 players)

    5.Critical Ops

Just like the rest of list you can pair up with friends or take on complete strangers all over the world. With A 100 player Vs player format and all the trends that have it landing on this list. This one has some very smooth gameplay. All animations are very smooth. Great variety on the skins. Weapons are unique and pretty fantastic. On the positives it’s a fast-paced mobile FPS reminiscent of CS:GO. What has it moving down the list is that there a pretty noticeable latency issues (lag) and very sparse content.

  • Restaurant Review App Roundup: Let’s Eat!

Are you looking for a great new place to grab a bite? Look no further than a good restaurant review app! Which review app is the best to use though? We’re getting meta, today, and reviewing the reviewers!

    Zagat

The well-respected Zagat name is also attached to a fine restaurant review app. This app is pretty no-nonsense, getting right into the reviews in a way that is almost too abrupt. However, if you just want the highlights and don’t have time to go in much deeper, this app is great. Zagat has separate scores for décor, service and food, allowing you to see the different aspects of reviewed restaurants.

Uniquely, Zagat sports a selection of professionally-reviewed and expertly recommended restaurants. If you want to spend less time browsing and more time fine dining, look no further than Zagat.

    Urbanspoon

Urbanspoon is a slick, stylish and polished app. Made with urban explorers in mind, it lets you browse restaurants by a number of criteria. You can compare restaurants by popularity, cuisine, overall rating and more! If you’re in a new city and looking for something to eat, this is a good app for you.

Urbanspoon even has some practical functionality. You can make reservations from the app, saving time when you’re getting ready to go get dinner!

    Foursquare

Featuring some really cool social functions, Foursquare is a popular app for circles of friends. Foursquare allows you to share your favorite places with your friends, and you can see your friends’ recommendations too! Your friends can suggest menu items at their favorite restaurants and you can tell the app which friends’ tastes you trust.

Foursquare also lets you tailor your own results by telling it what kinds of things you like. This helps you exert tighter control over search results and make sure you can find great new places that you like. Foursquare is a great pick if you like to see what your friends are eating!

Our Favorite Restaurant Review App: Yelp

While Yelp has grown to encompass much more than just restaurant reviews, it’s still the best app for searching for new places to eat. With tons and tons of reviews submitted by users and professionals alike, it’s hard to go wrong with Yelp. Easy to use and full of tons of great search functionality, we can’t recommend this one enough.

Notable features for Yelp include the option to search for local deals, find great little hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and tons of pictures of every restaurant reviewed. You always know what you’re getting into with a new place when you check it out on Yelp first!

  • Microsoft’s New Adaptive Controller Makes Xbox Gaming More Accessible Than Ever

Microsoft’s New Adaptive Controller Makes Xbox Gaming More Accessible Than Ever

For many gamers, the controller isn’t a portal into another world, but is a hindrance keeping them from enjoying the game. Microsoft seeks to alleviate that problem with their new adaptive controller. Retailing for $100, the adaptive controller looks pretty simple at a glance. The front face sports two big buttons and a directional pad. There are a few menu buttons, and some USB ports. It looks incomplete. And that’s purposeful, because it kind of is incomplete before its end-user gets their hands on it.

    Accessibility Through Adaptivity

On the side of the controller are a series of 3.5mm jacks, each wired to be an Xbox controller button. This might seem very odd to some readers. Why 3.5mm jacks? What is this? The Adaptive Controller is an officially sanctioned version of something many gamers have been using for some time now. Accessibility rigs like this one have been the norm for years for limited mobility gamers, using 3.5mm jacks to customize their experience. Binary, on-off buttons are commonly plugged into the jacks to act as different controller inputs. Some of the jacks even support standard-style josticks. The adaptive controller also sports two side USB ports.

One Size Does Not Fit All

By releasing an eminently-customizable controller and making no assumptions about the end-user, Microsoft has made something truly special. Officially recognizing the existence and unique struggles of mobility-limited gamers is refreshing. Many hospitals and non-profits have been helping gamers with rigs like this for some time. Seeing it officially condoned and supported by Microsoft is truly exciting for the future of accessibility in gaming.  The unassuming adaptive controller will certainly be a boon to those gamers who want to enjoy their experience without a standard controller holding them back.

    Adaptive Controller Affordability

By making this type of controller widely available for this price, Microsoft changes the game for limited-mobility gamers. Custom-built rigs like this are often prohibitively expensive. Broadened Horizons, a hardware maker, is somewhat similar to the Xbox Adaptive Controller, but has no large face buttons out of the box. It actually requires several add-ons to match the XAC’s functionality. Microsoft has certainly changed the face of this type of technology. The XAC will be compatible out of the box with all Xbox One systems, and a tiny bit of set-up gets it rolling on most Windows PCs. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, and more accessibility options will be opened up because of this first step.

  • Helsinki to Lead the Way For AI Education with Free Class

Helsinki to Lead the Way For AI Education with Free Class

Helsinki University in Finland has launched a course on artificial intelligence — one that’s completely free and open to everyone around the world. A lot of tech giants like Google now have divisions working on artificial intelligence projects, and even whole non-tech industries already depend on AI for various tasks. Its scary to think how much we already depend on AI and what it will entail in the future. Its best to jump ahead of the curve on this, especially you youngsters. Parent enroll your teens in this class for the summer.

More Details on Helsinki’s Free AI Class

Helsinki’s course focuses on the basics, starting with defining what AI is and explaining how it can solve problems. It is more of a beginner course. The fist part of the materials is a discussion on how we use AI  already  in the real world. In the second part of the course, they explain how machine learning works and what neural networks are. It will apparently take you about 30 hours to complete the course. Students in Finland can even earn academic credits through the Open University.

For us Americans, you can  enroll in the course outside Finland. You will have an option to receive a certificate that can be posted on the Linkedin page. Everyone who completes the course will also get a certificate (PDF) emailed to them. You have an option to do the course at your own pace, but they recommend trying to finish in 6 week. According to their understanding, having a deadline makes it more likely that students will finish the course.

    The Final Thought

This is the big growth sector right now and will be even more in the future. Helsinki University hopes that one percent of the Finnish population – some 54,000 people – will take the online course this year. So far 24,000 have signed up and that is alot. If you think about that number and the magnitude in which AI will dominate our next half century. Finland will be the worlds new super power.  It could  and probably will be the first nation to fall to  Elon Musk’s prophecy of the Immortal AI dictator.  The US needs to invest heavily in the next generation of programmers now and have them lead the curve on AI.

  • Digitsole Smart Sneakers

    Digitsole Smart Sneakers

October 21st. 2015, this is the day Martian McFly goes back to the future and get power laces shoes. I looked forward to this date since I was a small child I ever wanted from a shoe. Lets fast forward a few years to 2017, Nike released a back to the future special edition shoe. It was merely a high priced novelty shoe, completely useless and unrealistic. let down, no hover board, no power lacing shoes, I was feeling very betrayed. That was until I found the Digitsole Smartshoe 2.0 sneakers. Stamp out cold feet with these self-lacing, thermostat-controlled, crowdfunded beauties from shoemakers Digitsole.

Better late then never. However Digitsole founder and CEO Karim Oumnia says he and his team presented the first auto-lacing smartshoe in October 2015 (to fit with the Back to the Future theme) before taking their prototype to CES 2016. So im going to allow this,  I mean who knows how bad Doc and Marty messed up our timeline. Two  years late for a commercially viable smartshoe is understandable when you have a teenager messing with the time continuum.

    What is a SmartSneaker?

The first auto-tightening, interactive, heating, fitness tracking & shock absorbing sneaker. More importantly what can a SmartSneaker do. Designed to warm each foot to your preferred temperature with the tap of an app, Digitsole’s Smartshoe 2.0 sneakers also promise to track your movement, gait and calorie burn with greater accuracy than a wrist-worn device. And, whether you’re prone to overpronation or keen to pump up your propulsion, their app-based personalized audio coaching will help you take pride in your stride.

    No Power Laces?

Tell me about the power Laces. They don’t quite have power laces. Hold Up. However they do have auto tightening feature. As opposed to actually being ‘self-lacing’, the Digitsole shoes have a tongue-like cover that closes to tighten around your foot. You can activate it via the app or press a button on the side of the shoe to achieve that firm Nike Air Mag–esque fit.

    The Final Thought

These may already look familiar, I did a quick write up on them in the Top 5 wearables you need for the gym article a few weeks back. All Back to the future non-sense aside these are legit tech. These are ground breaking and revolutionary. The future of footwear, but would it be to much to add a speaker. That would be cool.

  • 5 Tech Misconceptions People Adamantly Believe

5 Tech Misconceptions People Adamantly Believe

I’ve done a lot of troubleshooting, fielded a lot of tech questions and generally helped a lot of people with their IT issues. I am the go to tech guy for a large number of people. I’m that nephew that installed AOL on your first computer, you know who I’m talking about. I’ve heard and seen a lot of obscure, obscure and down right wrong practices in tech.  Here are 5 general tech misconceptions the less techy crowd still think are good savvy ideas.

1.I Heard, If I Remove the Battery From my Laptop When it’s Plugged in it Will Extend my Batteries Life.

Wrong. Laptop batteries vary in their composition but they are all chemical based. Meaning, the atoms inside a given battery are manipulated to produce electrons and the chemicals in the reaction (oxidize) and decay over time. Something a bit similar happens in our own bodies and why anti-oxidants help us live longer. Energy has a price; but these reactions occur whether a battery is in use or sitting on a shelf.

Try it this way, who ages better the person that stays active and exercises daily or the tech blogger sitting at his computer all day not moving? The stationary blogger will age much quicker.

    2. All I know is Closing Unused Apps on Your iPhone will Make it Faster.

Again Wrong. If you own an iPhone, you’ve probably heard the myth that closing down all of your open iOS apps will save battery life And free up memory to run faster.

It’s a great way to shutdown a malfunctioning or crashed app. But the myth that it’ll help to eke-out a few more hours battery life is completely false.

Not only is force quitting your apps in this manner unnecessary, it’s actually detrimental. Apps in the background are effectively “frozen”, severely limiting what they can do in the background and freeing up the RAM they were using. iOS is really, really good at this.is so good at this that unfreezing a frozen app takes up way less CPU (and energy) than relaunching an app that had been force quit. Not only does force quitting your apps not help, it actually hurts. So in short if it’s not malfunctioning don’t worry about it.

    3. No, Don’t Charge your Phone Battry till It’s at Zero

The idea that you should always completely discharge a battery before charging it up again has legitimate origins, but it doesn’t apply to current technology. Years ago, when nickel–metal hydride (NiMH) and nickel-cadmium (NiCad) batteries were common, they suffered from an issue called battry memory: Unless the battery was completely spent before being recharged, it would “remember” how much power it had used and only charge back up that amount. If done repeatedly over time, the battery would never charge totally again.

The lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that’s probably in your phone or laptop right now doesn’t suffer from this issue. They have a limited number of charge “cycles”before batteries start to hold less overall power. Ideally charge your devices from time to time before they fully die.

4.The Updates are just a way to make my phone Crash so I have to get a new one

Just before the latest and greatest phone comes out, your phone suddenly starts running slowly. Maybe it starts freezing, or the apps you use get sluggish. Either way, if you can relate, you can probably also understand the common feeling that this is all a plan by tech companies to force you into upgrading.False

Its a common Tech misconceptions, It’s not some corporate trick to force you into the newest tech, or trap you on the consumerist treadmill. As those new phones are released, they come with more memory, better screens, faster processors. Then developers start building their apps around them. When they do, they optimize their apps for the newer devices. So as apps are updated to make use of all of the features on those new devices, they seem to slow down on older phones.

    5. Karen Told me, off-brand ink cartridges voids the warranty on your printer

Knock it off Karen. Untrue. Branded ink cartridges are expensive so people often use off-brand cartridges to keep their printing costs down. Fortunately, despite the myth, There is no chance of voiding any warranty on your printer by using off brand cartridges. But then again, third-party tampering isn’t covered in the event of gunshot wounds to your printer either. Most all the problems that printers are likely to have are still covered just fine under the warranty.

The Final Thought on Tech Misconseptions

we could go on an on about Tech misconceptions and you are probably guilty of believing or even perpetuating some of these. Don’t be the Karen’s of the world and give it just a little more thought. Tune in next time when we talk about de fragging memory and airport x ray machines. I may just turn this in to a regular colum

  • Wearable Tech: Which Tech Items are Must-Haves?

Wearable Tech: Which Tech Items are Must-Haves?

The hot new trend of wearable tech has gotten a ton of traction lately. Apple Watch, FitBit and countless others have made wearables hot-ticket items. They’re stylish, functional and cool all at once. Which ones are our favorites? Which ones are must-haves? Check out our roundup of the coolest wearable tech out right now!

    Rocket Skates

Oh yes, these are real. Sort of like a combination of Heelies and an electric scooter, these sci-fi action-hero shoes can propel you at up to 12 mph. That’s super impressive for being shoes with wheels. These cool shoes also come with a phone app to track your route, mileage and battery.

These aren’t easy to use, to be sure, but if you’re looking to turn heads and jet around on freaking rocket skates, these are awesome. Just be careful not to crash into any walls or anything.

    Lenovo Vibe Band

At least one smart watch had to make the list! The Lenovo Vibe Band is a stylish little device. Sporting a unique e-ink display, the Vibe looks great in direct sunlight and has a discreet display. It functions as a fitness and sleep tracker and does it all with 7 days of battery life.

Even better, the Vibe Band is priced under $100, giving you a ton of features without having to pay Apple Watch or Android Wear prices.

    Bio Sport Smart Ear Buds

These ear buds double as biometric sensors and fitness trackers. Pretty neat, huh? They have great sound quality thrown in, too, which is always a plus for working out! These neat little ear buds can be tossed in a bag and stored easily, and they appear very discreet when in-ear. If you want a fitness tracker but don’t like wrist-mounted devices that get in the way or draw attention to themselves, then the Bio Sport Smarts are for you!

The Coolest Wearble Tech Device: Nixie

This incredibly cool little drone wraps around your wrist like a watch when not in use. When you command it, however, it unfolds and takes off. It can then snap pictures, usually selfies, before swooping back down to your wrist. It looks like something Tony Stark would have and it is amazing.

While it might not be the most useful wearable in the world, it tops this list for just being so cool. It’s just incredibly impressive to see it unfold, take off, and do its thing before landing back where it started. This one is still in development, so it won’t be available just yet. Hopefully it’ll get a full release soon!

  • Top Ten Retro Consoles Millennials Will Never Forget

Top Ten Retro Consoles Millennials Will Never Forget

If you were a kid before the turn of the century, it’s pretty likely you played some console now considered retro. If you’re looking for a trip down memory lane, we’ve got you covered! Today, we’re rounding up the ten best retro consoles that you’re never going to forget! Did your favorite make the list? Read on!

    10. Playstation

Sony’s first foray into the gaming industry was certainly a memorable one. The PlayStation, released in late 1995, promised to be a more mature, adult-friendly console than Nintendo’s N64. To be fair, in many ways, it was. Boasting games like Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid and Tomb Raider, the original Playstation solidified itself as a real competitor for Nintendo.

Notably, Nintendo’s N64 console opted to use cartridges, instead of CD’s, for storing games. However, this led to some developers, like Square Soft, opting to make games for the Playstation instead of the N64. For instance, the ground-breaking Final Fantasy VII, initially slated for an N64 release, went to the Playstation. This migration of third party developers would go on to really sting for Nintendo in the coming console generations.

    9. Sega Dreamcast

The ill-fated Dreamcast remains a favorite of many gamers. It is largely considered one of the most-often forgotten retro consoles. The Dreamcast is largely remembered for being Sega’s last game console. Following a reasonable release, the Dreamcast lost ground to the Playstation 2. So, Sega decided to cut their losses and become a game publisher instead of a console manufacturer.

Yet Dreamcast had an eclectic library of unique games. While considered by many to be ahead of their time, many of these games are cult classics now. Jet Set Radio, Shenmue and Crazy Taxi are all considered to be examples of the interesting and new designs Sega was exploring. Also unique for the time was the Dreamcast’s built-in modem for supporting online play. However, due to the release of the PS2 and increasing competition in the industry, the Dreamcast was to be Sega’s last console.

    8. Game Boy Color

While the original Game Boy sold an absurd number of units, its successor is largely remembered by millennials as their first handheld console. The Game Boy Color boasted graphics in color (gasp!) on a handheld system, a first for Nintendo. Handheld versions of classic Nintendo series like the Legend of Zelda and Mario helped solidify the Game Boy Color as a must-have retro console.

A conversation about the Game Boy can’t leave out the juggernaut that is Pokemon. Originally a fun, cute little RPG about training little monsters became an international phenomenon. Millennials are united by their shared memory of how freaking huge Pokemon was. Between the card games, the cartoon and the video games, you couldn’t escape Pokemania. The first Pokemon Games were technically original Game Boy games, but Pokemon Yellow was a Color exclusive so we’ll count it.

    7. Sega Saturn

The Saturn was created as a competitor to the then-aging Super Nintendo. Sporting more “mature” titles like Virtua Fighter and Panzer Dragoon, the Saturn tried to set itself apart from Nintendo. Well remembered for its faithful ports of many arcade fighting games, the Saturn was a must-have for fighting enthusiasts.

While the Saturn would go on to be eclipsed by the more powerful Playstation, it is still fondly remembered by many as home to many interesting games and great ports. In addition, notable non-fighting games on the system included Nights into Dreams, a trippy rail-shooter, and the blisteringly-hard Panzer Dragoon series.

    6. Xbox

While consoles released after 2000 might not feel like retro consoles, they still fit the bill for this list. The original Xbox, released in 2001, marked Microsoft’s entry into the console wars. Buoyed considerably by the phenomenal Halo: Combat Evolved, the Xbox defined its niche as a serious-minded console. Sony’s Playstation 2 was viewed by many as a direct competitor with the Xbox, while Nintendo’s GameCube was somewhat relegated to “kiddy-console” status.

The Xbox is largely remembered for its humongous controller and as being something of a successor to the Sega Dreamcast. Sega released a sequel to Jet Set Radio, called Jet Set Radio Future, and another entry in the Panzer Dragoon series on the Xbox. However, Halo can’t be overstated: many millennials fondly remember LAN parties playing Halo. Additionally, when the sequel, Halo 2 was released, it pioneered Microsoft’s Xbox Live online service, showing a glimpse into the future of gaming.

    5. Playstation 2

Sony’s successor to the Playstation would go on to become one of the best-selling consoles of all time. Home to countless incredible first- and third-party games, the Playstation 2 is considered by many a high-water mark for video games. From racing games to fighting games to first person shooters, the PS2 had something for absolutely everyone. Almost everyone had one of these things. Heck, they even played DVDs back in the days when DVD players were pretty expensive!

With a library encompassing Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami and numerous other masterpieces, it’s no wonder so many millennials remember this retro console.

    4. GameCube

The successor to the N64, the GameCube was Nintendo’s first console to use an optical drive. For some inexplicable reason they chose to use mini-DVDs for storing games. This marked the second generation in a row that Nintendo chose to forego the industry standard for game storage. While the PS2 had countless games from 3rd party devevlopers, the GameCube is an example of how strong first-party support can make a console. Hence, beloved games like Wind Waker and Super Mario Sunshine helped the console prove its pedigree.

Yet as the console wars wore on in this generation, it became clear that Nintendo was moving more into their own space. While this allowed Sony and Microsoft to duke it out, Nintendo was making “purer” games, forgoing the flash and glitz of their competition. While this was met with mixed success, not all gamers loved it. Many found it refreshing that Nintendo stuck to their guns as a family-friendly developer. Others found this frustrating and longed for a more serious Nintendo.

How many strange decisions can a console manufacturer make and still create one of the greatest systems of all time? Let’s check the N64 to find out. Giant, three-pronged controller with odd button layout? Check. Uses cartridges instead of CDs for physical media? Check. Near-total lack of third-party support? Check.

Jokes aside, if you thought the GameCube got along on first-party support alone, the N64 is the poster child of the “Nintendo-machine” stereotype. However, Rare Games released game after awesome game in this era. For instance, Banjo Kazooie and Diddy Kong Racing are examples of Rare’s excellent design. However, nearly every other notable game was Nintendo-made. Pokemon Stadium, Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, the list goes on.

Rather than blemish its memory, however, this is one of the coolest retro consoles of them all, and it easily earns its high spot.

If you’re a millennial there is a 95 percent chance you owned a GBA. This thing was huge. It’s far and away the best-selling console of all time, and for good reason. The GBA represented a renaissance of the 16-bit era, and developers were in rare form on the console. After spending a whole generation perfecting 16-bit design on the Super Nintendo, Nintendo’s developers were clearly poised to flex their design muscles. Therefore games like Metroid: Zero Mission, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, Golden Sun are examples of some of the greatest games ever.

In addition to introducing a whole generation of gamers to gaming in general, the GBA also had a great series of ports. Older games like Link to the Past and the NES Classics series introduced a ton of millennial gamers to an era they might have otherwise overlooked. Because of its ubiquity, it’s impossible to overstate just how popular and influential the GBA was. Most of all, the GBA is remembered as the greatest of the handheld retro consoles.

Nintendo easily swept the top half of this list, and it’s not hard to see why. Because the consoles they released in these eras were defining, helping usher tons of kids into the hobby. The Super Nintendo is the most impressive of them all. With a revolutionary controller layout that would go on to define every gamepad that followed and some seriously impressive hardware for the time, the SNES left its mark.

This generation served as a golden age for 2D-platforming and RPGs. Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country represent the very greatest of the former. Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III are the prime examples of the latter. Other notable games, like Star Fox and F-Zero, showed off what the future of 3D games might end up looking like.

In retrospect, it’s incredible just how many mind-blowing games were on the SNES. Looking back, you can see the seeds for modern game design taking root for the first time in this era. The legacy of this generation lives on today in the design philosophy of all major studios. It also lives on forever in the memories of the kids who grew up playing these amazing games.
