  • A Google One Subscription and I Didnt Even Know It

A Google One Subscription and I Didnt Even Know It

Way, way back, all the way to a few months ago, Google announced Google One. Their new subscription program for getting more Google Drive storage and other increasable but not Amazon Prime deals and subscriptions. Remember this? Me either, but Over the course of the last few weeks, Google slowly rolled existing Drive subscribers over to a Google One membership and starting today, new users can sign up for a One subscription, too. I attempted to sign up, only to find I had signed up years ago while testing an android phone. Apparently Google got me on a $1.99 service for 50 GB of extra cloud service and I have been paying this for almost 3 years with no Idea.

    Google One, Google Drive

Google has been slowly upgrading existing paid Google Drive users like me to One over the past few months. Then today came and now is the first time people will be able to sign up for One rather than getting Drive and then being upgraded at random. Oh happy day. Google One plans start at 100 GB for $1.99. There’s also a 200 GB tier for $2.99 and a 2 TB option for $9.99. If you need even more storage space, Google will happily sell you 10 TB, 20 TB and 30 TB plans for between $99.99 and $299.99 per month.

One nice feature of these new plans is that you can share your storage allotment with up to five family members. For another unrelated reason One subscribers can get deals on hotels when you search for them in Google Maps. Google also gave all One members credits on Google Play and the company today said that it’ll soon offer members deals for purchases in the Google Store and through Google Express. Ok Google you apparently have had my subscription for years now and now you have my attention.

    The Final Thought

One thing did perk my ears and get my mind rolling. With the family sharing feature that will let the main account holder designate and assign out invitations to family members who in turn can use as much data as they want. The option makes for a more effective use of storage. This means, I can buy the 200 GB plan, upload my movie collection of 100 GB. I can then allow invited “family” members to access it and also designate them out storage to hold their video libraries. Thus giving me access to it. Ok so who is purchasing SOLO?

  • Android Pie Available Now on Pixel Phones

Android Pie Available Now on Pixel Phones

Android P, now officially named Android Pie, is available now on Google’s own Pixel phones. It will be rolled out to other phones near the end of the year, or maybe early in 2019. In any event, the Android OS powers around 90% of all smartphones on Earth, so any updates to it will affect a huge portion of the population. Today, we’re looking at the new features and characteristics you’ll find in the newest Android OS.

    Notch Support

This one’s a big more of an under-the-surface upgrade, but you’ll notice it if your phone has a notch at the top. The top notch, popularized by Apple’s phenomenal iPhone X, is a divisive design feature, but it’s here to stay. The support for notches is baked into the new Android OS, allowing apps to be made with a few different notch styles in mind. These easy designs will make the apps cleaner, clearer and have less information lost by the notch placement. Win-win!

    Gesture Control

In another iPhone X-inspired upgrade, Android Pie allows for gesture controls. This is likely to preempt the removal of a home button from various upcoming Android phones. Home buttons are likely to go the way of the headphone jack: eliminated for space. Home buttons take up valuable front-space, taking away from full-screen displays that run edge-to-edge.

Android Pie: The AI Operating System

AI is the future of smartphones. Android Pie is leaning into this future with several functions that will help make your phone more efficient and save your battery. The first of these is “slices” of apps appearing when you need information. For instance, if you’re looking for movie showtimes, Android will show you slices of the Fandango app for ticket prices and showtimes without opening the app itself. This saves you time and saves your phone’s battery.

Another functionality that is AI-powered coming to the Android OS is app suggestions. These suggestions follow your trends for when and where you open different apps. By intelligently spinning up apps you often use before you need them, the OS will be more efficient, battery-saving and modern. What’s not to love?

    Availability

Android Pie is available on Google Pixel smartphones now. It will be rolled out to other smartphones that use Android over the next few months. Stay posted for updates, we’ll bring them to you as more information is made available!

  • FCC Rules with Google on Fiber Anti-Competition Rules

FCC Rules with Google on Fiber Anti-Competition Rules

In an odd development that shows that the FCC is uncertain of the types of policy it wants to enforce, they’ve ruled in favor of Google in a recent turn of events. The rule is called One Touch Make Ready, and it’s a bit of a complex issue, especially given the FCC’s stance on Net Neutrality. The main aspect of OTMR rules holds that broadband providers who are adding new lines to utility poles can move competitors wires themselves to make room for their lines. This encourages competition, as previously telecom companies were in no hurry to roll their trucks out to move their wires for their competitors.

FCC Rules in Favor of Google

This OTMR ruling is beneficial for Google, who have been slowly rolling out their fiber broadband network to various cities. They encountered a significant slowdown when competitors like Comcast and AT&T proved very slow in making room for them on utility poles. While this foot-dragging is certainly in poor spirit, it’s understandable. If you were in charge of a business, would you be in any hurry to accommodate your competition? As such, rules allowing newcomers to simply move the existing lines themselves make sense from the stance of anti-competition.

    Mixed Signals

The FCC last year voted to take away Obama-era protections for broadband internet. The Net Neutrality vote is called the “Restoring Internet Freedom Order,” an ironic (and erroneous) name. Under the previous definition, Title II protections extended to broadband internet. This meant providers had access to all utility poles for broadband. However, since Pai led the gutting of these protections and defined broadband internet as not being telecommunications (no, seriously) these protections no longer apply.

This ruling, then, is in seeming opposition of that ruling. Why would the FCC act pro-competition now when they were so anti-consumer a few short months ago? That said, we don’t want to give you the wrong idea. In broad strokes, this promotes competition, which is good for consumers. If this marks the start of a change of character for Pai’s FCC, then all the better. That said, one worries when the other shoe will drop. After all, we’re dealing someone who was recently quite eager to gut Obama-era protections.

  • Moviepass on Life Support

    Moviepass on Life Support

First off I want to give a big thank you to Moviepass . Thanks to you its been a terrific summer at the movies. I have seen everything I could stomach to sit through. Yes I even saw Oceans 8. Going through my history in the Moviepass app I checked in and saw 52 movies since I signed up in March. It was a test just to write an article and I fell in love with watching movies in the theater again. I even found myself going out of my way to visit the towns older theaters that I used to frequent as a child just for nostalgia purposes. I can truly say it was a great summer at the movies thanks to movie pass.

52 movies in 5 months, at an avg. ticket price of $10 Moviepass paid $520 for me so far and I only shelled out $50 for the 5 month subscription. That is probably why Moviepass is on life support right now. We have seen the stock verse split in the past week for a 1:250 reverse, Only to watch that crash again. Shutdowns, crashes and failures on the user end. We are watching the deep a dying breath of Moviepass.

Is it time to give up? Cancel my subscription? Go back to paying for each movie I want to see? Not a chance, like it or not Moviepass has changed things. There is no going back and theater subscriptions are the business model of the future. The industry was taking a down turn for the first time in a 100 years and Moviepass breathed new life back in to it. THey will have to pry my Moviepass card from my cold dying hands…

    Is There Any Hope?

While it is looking very dark and there seems to be no chance of pulling out of this nose dive they are in now Moviepass is still clinging to life. They have been working on a cash shortage situation and a way to make this subscription turn a profit. They have in emergency fashion cut a lot of the options from the app. You can no longer see new release movies and some Movie times are just not available. They are in the process of raising the price to $14.95 monthly. I did a quick rundown on the math, with my usage its still highly advantageous for me. $74.95 for $520 worth of movie visits.

The only way this can work is if the theaters and studios start to see the impact Moviepass has had and can start using Moviepass to their advantage making it worth wild to subsidize the ticket cost for them. The price will obviously have to increase. $19.95 would be optimal if they can find a way to even make that profitable. Another option is to use the app to show movie trailers and gaining user interest through there. Have the app play an Ad for a trailer of an upcoming movie upon checking in to the app. Maybe even a 1-5 rating question of how likely are you to see this movie. Giving valuable user input of 5 million subscribers could be a nice barging chip for them.

    The Final Moviepass Thought

I’m all in on Moviepass and I’m really hoping it finds a way through this organizational pivot. Pivot they must, but I keep going back to the early days of Netflix when they disrupted the video rental industry.” They don’t charge late fees and the expense of using the mail system will break them”, on pivot and here we are. Hold strong movie pass, and for all of you debating on whether to cancel your subscription, stay tuned for my next article “ 5 reasons to keep Moviepass this fall”

  • Hori Bringing Real D-Pad to Switch this September

Hori Bringing Real D-Pad to Switch this September

If you’re a Switch owner who likes to play classic fighting games or platformers, you’re likely aware of how underwhelming the Joy Con’s D-Pad is. The four separate buttons with no central rocker feel very different than a traditional D-Pad. To remedy this, Hori released an officially-licensed Left-Hand Joy Con in Japan with a real D-Pad. New reports hold that Hori is looking to bring the Left-Hand Joy Con to the US in September.

    Details: Pricing and Real D-Pad

The Hori controller is only the left-hand Joy Con, which is interestingly asymmetrical. The D-Pad is real, with a central rocker and click-y action. However, it’s missing some key features used by the normal Joy Con. For one thing, the Hori controller has no Bluetooth, so it has to be connected to the Switch in handheld mode in order to function.

It naturally follows that it has no SL or SR button, as it can’t be used when off of the main tablet. Another no-brainer for an always-attached Joy Con is the lack of an accelerometer and gyroscope. It also has no HD rumble, which is standard for a third-party Switch Accessory.

These cuts do allow for one good thing: a lower price point. Nintendo sells two Joy Cons for $70, but Hori’s controller sells for $25. If you really want to play hardcore platforming titles like Celeste or Shovel Knight on the go, this might be a good choice for you.

    Not All Good News

However, the Japanese release of the Hori Joy Con hasn’t been entirely smooth. The Joy Con apparently has a bad habit of slurping the battery out of Switches it’s connected to. Whether the Switch is active or in sleep mode, the controller seems to greedily draw power from it. There are even a few scattered reports of the Hori controller disabling Switch docks when left attached to a Switch in its dock.

Hori has promised they are looking into these problems and intend to have them resolved by the time the device launches in the US. We will recommend all Switch owners use any third-party accessories with caution. Check reviews and sites like this to see if there are any reports of hardware failure. And, as always, try to stick with first-party devices for your Switch when you can.

  • Grover, Subscription Tech on the Reg

Grover, Subscription Tech on the Reg

Now This could be something. Grover, a German start-up offering customers tech products on monthly, quarterly and yearly subscriptions, just raised more than $42 million in early-stage funding, he company hopes to change consumer behavior toward tech products by making outright purchases unattractive. After signing a partnership agreement with German e-retailer MediaMarkt, the company will focus exclusively on the German market, but could offer their services internationally in the future.

    How Would This Work?

The Berlin-based startup that offers “pay-as-you-go” subscriptions to the latest consumer tech as an alternative to owning products outright. Grover wants to be something like a  Netflix for gadgets. It offers individual tech products by monthly, three-monthly or yearly subscription, or via its newly launched “Grover Mix” subscription, which has a fixed monthly price and lets you switch item at any time.

Here in the States we have similar options, like rent to own. This would be less of a sham and more of a return my old iphone and get the new one for a small monthly fee. This would allow us all to remain on the cutting edge with out getting out dated in a few months. Ask me about my $8000 Mac Pro from February. Yeah you know the feeling.

You are afforded some upside protection, should you wish to purchase the item after renting it first. You’re given the option to buy products with 30 percent of your subscription payments to date being deducted from the recommended retail price. For longer rental periods, Grover will also warn you if you are close to reaching 130 percent of the full purchase price and prompt you to consider buying it for €1.

    The Final Thought

There are still some serious kinks and logistic issues to iron out and this is still in the infant stages. On top of that it will only be available in Germany, not even in the rest of the EU. Need less to say I would be very in on the Grover Mix option. With their Series A in place this could be a big new thing i wouldn’t be surprised to see a global company take a crack at.  If you havent put it together yet, if Grover’s subscription model becomes compelling enough, purchasing many tech products will become so unattractive buying tech will go the way of the Blockbuster. Stay tuned for more information as it develops.

  • Apple’s iPhone X 6.1 Leak

    Apple’s iPhone X 6.1 Leak

It is once again that time of year. Now usually I like to wait till August 1st to start sifting through the rumors and mock ups about the new iphones, but we have a bonafide and pretty legitimate iPhone X 6.1 Leak. Serial mobile leaker Benjamin Geskin today shared images depicting what he claims are dummy units of Apple’s upcoming 6.5-inch “iPhone X Plus” and mid-tier 6.1-inch LCD iPhone. Images of iPhone dummy units have become something of an annual tradition in the rumor mill and these pictures come at the expected time in the yearly iPhone cycle. Lets get this party started with a quick “what we know” and “what we want” for this new Iphone.

    Coming September Probably

No official announcement has been made but according to long time industry insider…Me.. look for tuesday Sept 11th for a surprise apple announcement. They will likely announce the new Iphones at a keynote then. look for a a ship date of the new phone Sept 28th. There could be a curveball in the mix like last year. We didn’t see the new iPhone X 6.1 ship till Nov 3rd. That seems to be the exception and not the rule.

What We Know About the iPhone X 6.1

What we know so far is pretty slim and  slight. Apple CEO Tim Cook stated there would be a lock down on classified apple intel. However,  Apple will announce a 6.1 inch iPhone X. at a full 6.1 no bezel this will be the largest flagship screen available on any mobile phone. As of today we got a look at the first leaked image of this behemoth. (See Above).

Apple’s next iPhone unveiling is still over a month and a half away, we already have a pretty solid grasp on what Apple’s 2018 iPhone lineup is going to bring to the table. As you’ve probably heard by now, Apple’s upcoming iPhone lineup will likely consist of three brand new devices: a next-gen iPhone x , a 6.5-inch iPhone 9 Plus, and a 6.1-inch iPhone with an edgeless LCD display. In All likelihood it would make more sense to drop the Plus altogether and have an x and an x plus only.

    What We Want

All we really want at this point is some subsidy on the price. Like we use to get, Iphone $199 every 2 years. One of the more intriguing rumors regarding Apple’s next-gen iPhone lineup has nothing to do with features but rather with price. The iPhone X’s $1,000 price point likely kept otherwise interested consumers from upgrading, Apple this year will reportedly price the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone somewhere in the $600 to $700 range.

If this particular rumor pans out, it stands to reason that Apple will see an avalanche of upgrades as the device will likely prove to be incredibly popular among existing iPhone owners interested in a brand new form factor but not interested in breaking the bank. The cheaper price point, naturally, will come with a few tradeoffs. Most notably, the device will feature an LCD display as opposed to OLED. Further, the 6.1-inch iPhone may not ship with 3D Touch and may house less RAM. Design wise, the 6.1-inch iPhone may also feature thicker bezels than its iPhone X counterparts.

    The Final Thought

Year after year its been minute upgrades, small changes, and adaptations but nothing revolutionary. They set the table for a big year this year with the iphone X. I always felt the X was a beta of their next phone and soon we will see the perfected device. All that said, what do we really want to see in our iphones? Holographic displays, flexible screens, stackability? Honestly at this point we have all we need, want or desire just make it better and give us one more cool this we don’t even know about.

  • Disney Close to Finishing Deal to Acquire Fox

Disney Close to Finishing Deal to Acquire Fox

We’re so close to having the X-Men and Avengers meet on the big screen. On Friday, Fox shareholders agreed to Disney’s bid of $71.3 billion. This followed a bit of a bidding war between Disney and Comcast, who had previously bid $65 billion in cash. Most of Disney’s bid amounted to shares, instead of actual cash. However, Comcast moved on to pursue UK-based broadcaster Sky after their initial bid failed. As such, Disney is quite close to its goal to acquire Fox.

    What this Means for Disney

Disney, which has been on a roll acquiring film studios and entertainment rights, is ascendant at the moment. In 2009, they acquired Marvel Studios, and have released countless blockbuster hits starring Marvel characters. Lucasfilm was acquired in 2012 as well, bringing Star Wars to the House of Mouse. Disney is now on track to be one of the largest entertainment companies in the world. The Fox acquisition will require that all of Fox’s sports networks be spun off into distinct entities so that the merger doesn’t violate anti-competition laws.

What this Means for the MCU

Most importantly to fans of Marvel movies, this now means that the X-Men and the Avengers are back under the same roof. Additionally, the Fantastic Four have now been brought back into the fold. This means that one of the most successful superhero franchises of all time can now use its biggest names. Marvel fans around the world are ecstatic to see where this might lead.

Fans are particularly eager to see a potential Avengers Vs X-Men adaptation. A new series of X-Men films re-establishing the characters in the MCU may be in order, as well. Additionally, a series of films focusing on the Fantastic Four and introducing audiences to the comics-accurate version of the team could also be in the works if this deal goes through.

What’s Next for Disney to Acquire Fox?

The merger must now pass the FCC. Yes, this means that the internet’s least favorite person, professional jerk Ajit Pai is the final arbiter on whether or not your favorite comic book characters can appear on-screen together. If that’s not enough to make you a little antsy, I don’t know what is. However, odds are good this merger will pass the FCC. In as little as two years we could see Iron Man onscreen alongside Wolverine! How awesome is that?

  • Top 3 Small Walk In Closet Designs

Top 3 Small Walk In Closet Designs

If you’re currently facing the small walk-in closet predicament, you’re in the right place to find solutions. Custom closet design can help maximize storage volume in even the most irregular and unfortunately-sized closets.

A walk-in closet can be quite a luxury. Who doesn’t drool over those beautiful closets you see with miles of shelving and hanging space and even an island in the middle full of storage drawers?! But just because you have a closet that you can “walk” into, doesn’t mean that you have a huge closet. In fact, some “walk-in” closets can be quite small. One sided. Or even more of a step-in then really a “walk” in. And if you have a smaller walk-in closet, it can be even more complicated to organize then a large wall closet.

Here are our top 3 small walk in closet designs.

Layout #3: Rock an ‘L’ Shape
The bare minimum size for a walk-in closet is understood to be 5×5’. Assuming the door swings outward, this means you only have room for a very particular arrangement of storage units. Rather than trying to stuff the closet full on all walls, working within an ‘L’ shape will help you keep everything far more organized and accessible. For these admittedly tiny walk-in closets, we recommend a truly custom combination of hanging rods and open shelving to effectively store your wardrobe essentials.

One example: situate two hanging rods at waist height, one on the wall opposite the door and the other on one of the adjacent walls. Your hanging rods will, therefore, form an ‘L’ when viewed from above. Add three or four angled shoe shelves above these rods and fill the rest of the remaining vertical space with open adjustable shelving. This way you’ll maximize every last inch of wall space without sacrificing the area that usually hangs below your suits.

    Layout #2: Shelves vs. Rods
If your walk-in closet managed to get away with only the minimum 3 feet of walking space and you’re stuck with only one wall that’s appropriate for hanging rods, this layout is for you. Of course, adding dual hanging rods to this wall will significantly increase your hanging storage, if that’s what you care most about. However, you might be surprised to discover that the opposite wall (which is usually left bare by developers) can still be used for valuable storage space. A custom designer can incorporate the slimmest of shelving units onto that previously-unused wall, usually at a depth of 12” or less, to help you gain more usable surfaces.

Alternatively, this layout idea can be customized further by incorporating open shelving units (including angled shoe shelves) on both opposing walls, with as little hanging space as your wardrobe actually requires. Knits and denim actually wear better when stored flat, and you may find that folding clothes lets you fit even more into your minimally-sized closet. Include a single hanging rod section around 72” for any long garments you might need to hang, and you’ll be good to go.

    Layout #1: Duals and Drawers
For a rectangular walk-in closet with minimal walking space, start your design by adding dual hanging rods on both longer walls. Usually placed around 40 and 80 inches, dual hanging rods essentially double your available hanging space without taking up any more valuable square inches. Add in a bank of soft-close drawers topped with open shelving on the short wall opposite the closet door, and you’ve instantly gained the luxurious feel your closet was lacking.

This layout is perfect for partners sharing a closet, because you can easily store clothing separates (slacks, blouses, shirts, skirts, and pants) in cohesive areas organized by color, season, or occasion, and you won’t have to expand into each other’s limited territory.

With These Layouts, No Walk-In Closet is Too Small.
Armed with the layout ideas that most commonly succeed, you’ll be able to create a more stable plan for how to improve your clothes storage situation. Keep in mind that each of these ideas is merely a starting place, and that a custom design expert will be able to modify and combine these ideas as necessary to create a truly functional layout for your particular space. And, even better, with your storage space maximized, you might even have room to include custom accessories that take a closet from basic to beautiful.

  • Top 5 AdWords Management Services

    Top 5 AdWords Management Services

Well-crafted bids can be very lucrative, whereas misplaced investment on irrelevant keywords, or over-investment, can be disastrous. Many companies try to go it alone, and they grossly underperform in search engine conversion.

As a result, countless businesses have popped up that are designed to help companies avoid making these mistakes and to leverage search engines into a powerful tool for generating new leads, sales and profits.

Every agency will promise you stunning results, but, not surprisingly, not everyone will be able to deliver on these promises. Proper AdWords management can be a huge boost to your business, so to make sure you’re getting the right help to make full use of this opportunity, we’ve compiled a list of the five best AdWords management agencies you can find. Each one offers something a bit different, but Mutesix is the one we consider to offer a good balance of everything. Here are some details on each one of our choices:

    #5—Jumpfly

Another major player that is good for those looking for an agency with lots of resources and experience is Jumpfly. They have over 400 clients, mostly in retail and consumer goods. However, despite being so big, they still only focus on AdWords and PPC.

This is somewhat surprising, as agencies this big usually branch out into different areas of marketing. But it’s an indicator of success, as they’ve been able to build an impressive roster of clients while focusing on one aspect of online marketing and advertising.

Jumpfly works to help you find the best Adwords for both Google and Bing, and what’s nice is that they also offer a money back guarantee when you first get started. If you aren’t satisfied with them for any reason, you’re under no obligation to stay with them, but chances are you’ll find yourself being very happy with the work Jumpfly does for your company.

    #4—CPC Strategy

CPC Strategy is what we call a heavyweight agency. They have over 250 clients, and many of them are national brands that are forces within their respective markets. In general, they work almost exclusively with clients in retail, but they have also been known to work with other consumer goods companies. Some of their most well-known clients include Sears, WWF, Clarks and Omaha Steaks.

You can expect the people at CPC Strategy to have a wide range of experience in many different types of marketing, but they have particular success in AdWords management. Additionally, because they are so big, they have lots of resources available to help you achieve your goals.

But all this experience and all these resources come with an extra cost. If you are only looking for an AdWords manager, the folks at CPC can certainly do the job, but there may be other agencies with a more focused PPC approach

Also, because of their size, CPC might not be able to offer you the same level of personalization as other boutique firms, but they are certainly more than capable of delivering a quality AdWords management strategy, and they have ways of complementing this to help bring your business to new levels.

    #3—Tower 33 Digital Marketing

One of the most important things to know about marketing is that it requires a multi-leveled approach. When people come into contact with your product, they are all at different stages. Some are ready to make a purchase, some are just informing themselves of the different options and others are just curious consumers seeing what’s out there.

As such, for marketing to be successful, it’s important to tailor messages to find and connect with people on all different levels. This is very similar to the “Customer Journey” approach used by Tower 33 Digital Marketing. They make use of AdWords, SEO, social media and other forms of digital marketing to reach people at all different parts of the sales funnel and direct them to your company. They have a proven track record of improving traffic and conversion numbers.

    #2—SINGLE GRAIN

What’s nice about Single Grain is that it combines marketing and web development. When it comes to internet marketing, design and strategy are closely linked, although few too many people realize this. Single Grain offers custom web design, and they also offer a whole host of WordPress plugins to help make your site run more effectively, efficiently and profitably.

Single Grain is a boutique firm that works to create a personalized marketing plan for your company. You won’t have to worry about being treated like a nobody, even if you are a small company. The people over at Single Grain will soon become your family, and doing business with them will seem easy.

    Final thoughts

The upsurge of eCommerce and digital marketing has made proper AdWords management essential for any business operating online. However, this world can be confusing, and as such, it can be expensive. Finding a quality agency that will work to understand your needs and to craft a strategy that will succeed is of utmost importance.

It combines web development products with a range of digital marketing strategies, including AdWords management, to deliver a custom-made marketing strategy that will help make your business better.
