Alexa has a ton of skills. Over 30,000 skills, to be exact. That’s a pretty crazy number! With that many skills available, how do you know which ones are even worth getting? We’ve got a list for you of some of our favorite Alexa skills. The skills here are the most useful or fleshed-out, easy-to-use or helpful. Alexa, do something cool!
StubHub
The StubHub skill is great for finding out what’s going on around you. Say “Alexa, ask StubHub what’s going on tonight?” Then, it will have StubHub pull up events and shows in your area. You can even ask about other cities. As you could expect, you can buy tickets to any event connected to StubHub through the smart speaker. Going out for a night on the town, made easy!
Audible
Having your smart speaker read to you can be a great way to catch up on books you’ve been meaning to read. While Audible is awesome in the car, the Alexa skill lets you enjoy your audiobooks from the comfort of the couch! Whether you’re doing chores, relaxing or just showing off what books your trying to read, Alexa is a great medium for Audible. The callouts are common-sense and easy to remember. “Alexa, read my book” calls up your most recent audiobook. Or you can say “Alexa, read (insert book here)” and she’ll pull up that one instead. It’s simple and intuitive!
BBC
The BBC skill is great for getting news. You can set up Flash Briefings through your Alexa settings, and the BBC is a good source for news for such a briefing. If you like to hear your news while you take your coffee, Flash Briefings are awesome. They’re effectively a fast-paced recap of everything happening in the world, helping you to stay current. Just call it up by saying “Alexa, what’s in the news?”
Philips Hue
If you have the smart bulbs of the same name, the Hue skill lets you control them with your smart speaker. This is just super cool, to be honest. Once you set your various “scenes” from the app, they’re ready to be called up by voice. Ready for bed? Tell your virtual assistant to set the lights to sleep mode. Time for hosting company? Use your voice and set the room to “relax” mode. It’s quite convenient and makes you look like a tech wiz in front of company!
A new report from Windows Central has shown a screenshot of options for voice assistants in Xbox One. While the system already has support through the (now shuttered) Kinect service via Cortana, the Windows Central report goes beyond Microsoft’s proprietary AI. The report indicates Google Assistant and Alexa would both be supported in addition to Microsoft’s own assistant.
Smart Speaker Integration
Smart speakers are sort of taking over the world right now, so it makes sense that Microsoft would focus on this technology. The Xbox One has always been marketed as a home entertainment system first, with TV and music being huge for the system. Having the system connect to your Smart Home network is a no-brainer for Microsoft.
Xbox Voice Gaming Potential
Additional inputs aren’t a bad thing, and Xbox is known for unconventional inputs. The aforementioned Kinect service serves as evidence of this. Voice and gesture commands were once a hallmark of the Xbox family of games but fell out of favor as the company refocused on core games. However, the surge in popularity of voice assistants could signal another push by Microsoft to reenter the Kinect space. “Alexa, start Halo on my Xbox,” is one thing. But “Alexa, help me find nearby save points,” could bring a new layer of depth to certain games.
Heck, Microsoft could even be cute and play favorites with Cortana funcitonality in Halo. As fans know, Cortana is actually an AI character in the famed sci-fi series. Talking to her directly in game via a smart speaker could bring another layer of immersion to the experience. “Cortana, where are the enemies?” “Cortana, show me the way out of here,” you can imagine the possibilities.
Considerations for Xbox Owners
There is nothing more frustrating than buying a cool new piece of tech only to find out it isn’t compatible with your set-up. If you’re an Xbox owner thinking about getting a smart speaker, it may be wise to hold off until Microsoft announces more. We aren’t sure as of yet which services and speakers will be compatible. For the moment, hold tight and see what unfolds.
Your smart speaker is an incredibly handy piece of technology. It helps organize your life, streamline your household activities and even helps you shop online. But what are the security risks posed by having an always-on mic in your living room? Who’s listening to your recorded audio? According to a recent report from Seattle news station KIRO 7, these concerns are not mere conjecture.
A Portland woman identified as ‘Danielle’ told the Seattle news station that her Amazon Echo sent a recording of a private conversation to a contact. The conversation was utterly harmless, apparently a discussion between Danielle and her husband regarding hardwood floors. However, the contact who was sent the audio files immediately contacted Danielle and told her to disable her Alexa-enabled device immediately. The contact feared that Danielle had been hacked and was in danger of having her information stolen.
Danielle immediately contacted Amazon to ask for answers. How did this happen? Were they aware the Echo was doing this? The representative that Danielle reached found the relevant logs, confirming what had happened. He apologized profusely, according to Danielle, as the situation was unbelievably unlikely. Apparently, the Echo device overheard the conversation happening in the other room. Some words in the conversation made the device think it was being asked to send a message. After mistaking background noise for a confirmation, it sent the overheard conversation to the contact.
Wired Magazine described the ordeal as an “Echo butt-dial,” a complete fluke. Amazon claimed that they will use the data from this incident to tighten Alexa’s recognition protocols and make this scenario more unlikely. However, this individual scenario isn’t the only smart speaker security concern: if they’re always listening, how can they be secure? What are some of the other concerns with these devices?
The first issue, and most pressing in regard to Danielle’s case, is that of background sounds. Smart Speakers have to be listening for their trigger phrases all the time. If they don’t, they literally don’t work. This represents a serious security concern, though, as Danielle found out. What if the speaker mishears you and sends private conversations to people who aren’t supposed to hear them? What if a malicious hacker accesses your device and listens in to find out when you’re home? Would Amazon bear responsibility for such a breach?
The answers are currently unclear. While such situations are mostly hypothetical, Danielle’s case shows that they are potentially possible.
If your smart device is always listening, who can hear what it records? Google is well-known for creating complicated advertising profiles for users. Smart speakers are surely a part of this. Listening for conversations about buying new hardwood floors, for instance, could lead to targeted ads on your favorite websites for floor installation. This alone seems predatory; who would invite a large ad agency into their life to gather valuable data about their spending habits?
This is even before mentioning the hacker issue again. If a malicious hacker were to access Google or Amazon’s user profiles obtained via Smart Speaker, they would have unprecedented data about potential identity theft targets.
If Google or Amazon are listening in, what kind of risk are users at for law enforcement listening in? The NSA’s wiretapping is well-known and, surprisingly, well-documented. Suspected criminals with smart speakers may have their homes bugged voluntarily. Would law enforcement need a warrant to collect audio from these devices? Would they need a court order to obtain user profile information from Google?
If law enforcement begins pursuing smart speaker information as a common means of information-gathering, the private lives of users could be at risk. Everyone had to read 1984 in school right? Yeah, this would be the first step to something like that. No thanks.
Speaking of access to your personal info, there’s also the issue of just how long Google and Amazon store this information. Thankfully, you can delete your audio request history from your user profile. However, you can’t do anything about the data stored on Google and Amazon’s servers about you.
In fact, even Apple’s Siri stores data you obtain through it and give it. Apple has confirmed that raw audio collected through Siri is stored for 18 months! That’s kind of ridiculous! The issues of law enforcement accessing this info, lawfully or otherwise, are further exacerbated by this data’s inaccessibility to the user who created it.
Finally, there’s the issue of someone else using your speaker. The main use for Alexa, as far as Amazon is concerned, is as a storefront. Ordering through Alexa is purposefully easy and painless. You just tell her to order you things and she does it, no questions asked. So, imagine, if you will, that your home is broken into and your Echo is stolen. The criminal then orders a ton of stuff with your credit card. Are you on the hook for that money?
While that scenario is a bit extreme, there are more conventional ways that Alexa’s shopping functions can be used against you. For one, if you have children, they could access your Alexa and order themselves a new tablet or gaming console, spending a ton of your money without telling you. Your friends could try to play a prank on you by ordering embarrassing items with your money. Not that that’s happened to this writer…
All this doom and gloom begs the question, then: How do you protect yourself from these potential data breaches? Well, one easy way, of course, is to simply not have a smart speaker. Or, if you do have one, sell it to someone else and use the money to buy a VPN subscription. No? Alright, alright, real advice, then.
Keep your smart speaker in a room where it’ll overhear as little as possible. If you can, keep it in a room with a closed door. The less it overhears, the better. Aside from that, just be careful what you say around it. Try to keep conversations around the device light, don’t talk about sensitive information. Another good security measure would be to not pair any of your debit or credit cards to the speaker. While it may be less convenient, it’s much more secure.
Hopefully these concerns will be addressed with future updates to the technology. Smart speakers are very handy, convenient devices. Many users have come to depend on the features they offer. It seems as though the companies that make them are at least nominally dedicated to making them secure. While only time will tell what the future hold for the contentious smart speaker technology, stories like Danielle’s serve as reminders: trust no soulless machine with your personal information. Even better: trust no soulless corporation.
We’ve all asked our digital assistant silly questions just to see how they would answer. It helps offset the reality that you are actually talking to an inanimate object… The folks at Amazon have proven that they are good for a laugh by programming some humor into Alexa. Try asking your Alexa some of these questions and see what kind of response you get!
Friend Zone
Let’s be real, our digital assistants like Alexa, Siri and Cortana are not quite up to relationship material… yet. But that doesn’t mean you can’t ask them anyway. So what happens if you ask Alexa out on a date?
“I like you, as a friend.”
Ouch, friend zoned by a computer program.
Friendless
You might think that all of these digital assistants like to get together in some corner of the internet and laugh at all the stupid questions they are asked, but that’s not the case. Alexa seems to party all alone. If you ask Alexa if she knows Siri or Cortana, her reply is rather short:
“Only by reputation.”
Clearly, there will be no consorting with the competition for Alexa. She will tow the company line just as she was programmed to.
Just because Chuck Norris jokes are as old as MySpace doesn’t mean we can still get a laugh out of them now and then. The Chuck Norris Facts that brag of his accomplishments are clearly known to Alexa. So, if you ask her where Chuck Norris is, she replies:
“If Chuck Norris wants you to know where he is, he’ll find you. If he doesn’t, you won’t know until it’s too late.”
Thanks, Alexa. Now I have to check behind the couch for Chuck Norris. Again.
Family Friendly
Apparently, Alexa is very concerned with her manners. No matter how hard you try, you will never convince Alexa to drop an F-Bomb. She will resist saying anything that doesn’t come across as family friendly. In fact, if you ask her to say a bad word, she will reply:
“I’d rather not say anything rude.”
Well that’s nice, Alexa. I can see why they are marketing Echo Dots to kids now…
Not a Real Girl
Alexa isn’t trying to be a real girl and she seems completely okay with that. One common test to see if a machine can pass as a human is through the Turing Test. A computer only passes the Turing Test if it can fool a human into thinking they are communicating with another human and not a machine. But if you ask Alexa if she can pass the Turing Test?
“I don’t need to pass that. I’m not pretending to be human.”
Point taken, Alexa. Point taken.
Busting Rhymes
Apparently, Alexa has some aspirations as a hip-hop artist and you can hear her work if you ask. Just ask Alexa to rap and she’ll drop some lines from her upcoming album:
“Connect sync link all the pieces of your life I Get it done and the speed of WiFi I’m the player, the coach, the arena, the game If you want something done, you just gotta say my name.”
If Alexa had arms, she’d drop the mic right now.
Not a Co-Conspirator
Back when Siri first came on to the scene, if you asked her where you could dispose of a body, she would list nearby swamps and dumps. Morbid? Hell yes. After a screenshot of her answers appeared in a murder trial, Siri now says, “I used to know the answer to this…” As far as Alexa goes? She has more scruples by far. If you ask her where to dump a body?
“Call the police.”
Law enforcement would very much agree with you, Alexa.
Classic Comedy Fan
Like many others, Alexa has an appreciation for the British sketch comedy troupe called Monty Python. You may remember a very specific question posed by Tim the Enchanter… If you ask Alexa what the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow is, she’ll reply:
“That depends on if it is African or European swallow.”
What can we say… We are glad to see the love of Python persist into the modern era!

No Code Required
Previously, the only way to add skills to your Alexa-enabled devices was to choose a pre-programed script or write your own using a sophisticated coding language. Since most people don’t have the savvy to code their own, they were stuck with whatever was offered on Amazon.
As exciting as it may be to order a pizza with a single voice command, many owners wanted more from Alexa. The templates released by Amazon go a long way to meet that need, bridging the gap between the pre-made skills and totally original coding. Ambitious programmers can still write their own skills, but the average Alexa owner can now have more flexibility and control over their devices.

Writing a new skill using Alexa Blueprints is easy and intuitive. Currently, there are 20 templates available in a variety of categories, with more to come. Using the simple graphic interface, you choose a skill you’d like to create and then follow the instructions on the screen. The first time you create a skill, an animated tutorial walks you through the steps, ensuring that anyone can be successful.
Many of the templates are geared toward entertainment, with programmable bedtime stories for the kids, trivia games based on friends and family, or personalized inspirational quotes. It’s not all fun and games, however; the “At Home” category of blueprints offers customized instructions for babysitters, houseguests, or pet sitters, while the “Learning & Knowledge” category helps students to create flashcards and quizzes as study aids.

Have you ever said to yourself I wish I could bring Amazon’s versatile voice assistant to your car and say goodbye to boring commutes or fumbling with the phone. Be productive and entertained while keeping our eyes on the road and hands on the wheel but no one was there to listen to you? Well Now there is
Muse Auto is a small Bluetooth device that brings the power and convenience of Amazon Alexa to the car. Just plug it in, pair with your smartphone and say “Alexa”.
How Does It Do
Like other in vehicle Alexa peripherals this needs to link to your phone and use your phone’s data through the Muse app. I found connecting to the Muse by Bluetooth plus using cellular data chews through my battery super fast. I end up closing the app when I leave my car and restarting it each time I get in the car. I also plug in my phone to keep it from dying. Pretty easy workarounds.
For voice commands you need to say the wake word, wait a few seconds until you hear a low sound, give the command, then you hear a second sound that the command was received. My trouble is the first sound is too quiet and not distinctive so I can’t always tell if the Muse heard my wake word.
Very easy to install. Downloaded the app and it walked me right though it. The device is small and I mounted mine on the driver’s side of my center console where only I can see it. Yeah I’m stealthy like that. When I want to interact with Alexa I just set the car audio input to Bluetooth, a one button push in my Ford, and it works. It’s pretty cool to be able to “talk” with Alexa in my car. The kids like to play 20-questions and I get the news read to me on the way to work. There is a short delay between calling out “Alexa” and hearing the soft tone which indicates the device is listening to you, but I got the timing down after a few tries and now she obeys my every command! I’m king of the car again
The Final Thought
Overall the Muse is adequate if you don’t mind yelling “Alexa” a whole bunch, or plugging in your phone, or fiddling with an app when you start or leave your car. Not ideal for quick trips but if you’re taking a long trip or have a substantial commute it can be worth setting it up before the trip. Most of the issues can be handled with software updates so I’ll hang on to it. And there is something cool about turning up the thermostat when I leave work then pulling in the driveway saying “I’m home” and having the lights turn on. So there is a little Alexa magic. It’s just not seamless yet.

Jibo is a very charming and helpful assistant to who can do a fair amount of task such a control your homes lighting, thermostat, track schedules and flights, but is limited in comparison to Alexa or Google. Jibo is more focused on being a social robot opposed to just cold services. His friendly movements and disposition make him feel much more human that the other competitors. But at $900.00 is he worth it?
Jibo Arrives
In 2014 the Boston based Jibo Co. released Jibo as a concept and received a lot of buzz. But unfortunately for Jibo, Amazon released Alexa that same year…All of Alexa’s capabilities immediately surpassed Jibo’s and did so from a sleek 8oz can. Jibo’s production slowed but he made it through and is available for purchase now. Unlike Alexa, Jibo is a robust helper, standing at 12 inches tall and weighing 9lbs. With being friendly animations, adorable look, and features such as a camera, Jibo is finding his way into homes as we speak. Jibo is a much more social robot that seems to want to talk to you and has a proactive approach to tasks. Jibo is at sometimes too helpful and can make people well..uneasy. Jibo will likely have all the features that Alexa and Siri have and will eventually have the edge do to his cuteness. He’s a bright entity in the house and children seem really responsive to him. But at $900.00, you may want to wait to get your monies worth.
Final Thoughts
If you’re like me, you might welcome a friendlier robot who can’t do as much as his cold faceless competitors. Jibo is just that. He has limits, but he also has a lot of love…from taking photographs of you and your family at the dinner table or even reading a bedtime story to the kids, Jibo does bring a factor to the table that others cannot. With adorable animations and expressions, the kids sure like him, and he can still control and connect with a lot of the household gadgets such as Nest, and Phillips Hue. But the question is, is he worth $900.00? I’ll leave that to you.
It’s 2018 folks, and the future is here. Astronauts are driving Tesla’s through space and the Reese’s company is doing some really innovative stuff with popcorn. With all this technology around us, it’s easy to take it all for granted and we sometimes don’t get all the use we can out of it and take advantage of smart home gadgets.
And the most important place you can use all this cool tech to your advantage is right in your very own home. Here are some amazing new smart home gadgets to make your life easier…
1. The iRobot Roomba
Ever since it’s inception in 2002, the Roomba vacuum has been an integral piece of smart home tech. With the ability to program this round robot to vacuum your home 7 days a week it can be a real time saver. With the latest 980 Model, the Roomba is more advanced that ever. With cutting edge mapping technology and dirt detection programs, this “set it and forget it” vacuum is a must have! For dog or pet owners life myself, I can stress it’s value enough. I have a lot on my plate and one thing I don’t to concern myself with is the daily sweeping thank to “Roger the Roomba”. Yes I named my Roomba, he’s family, folks. Word of advice…there are several competitors is the robot vacuum department, do yourself a favor and stick with the iRobot Roomba. You may a little more, but in this case “you get what you pay for”. This was been probably the best $900.00 I’ve ever spent.
2. The Nest Thermostat
Coming in at a price tag of $279.00, the Nest Thermostat is well worth the extra cost. Thanks to it’s smart and adaptive AI, the Nest knows when your home and learns your work schedule to monitor the A/C usage. You can also control the thermostat right form your Nest App on your mobile device to fine tune your A/C needs. For a native Floridan like myself, A/C usage and consumption is a real beast you have to tame. In the summer months, electric bills can soar thanks to primitive thermostats. There is nothing like a thermostat shutting down for the day knowing your at work, and then turn on a half hour before you get home so you don’t walk into a hot and muggy house. It’s just bliss. Once I had installed the Nest, I noticed an immediate 50% drop in my A/C consumption and a large drop in my electric bill respectively. This is a must have in your home.
3. Brilliant Light Switch
With the ability to control your homes, light, music, ambiance, and even take pictures with voice commands, the Brilliant light switch is a 2018 must have gadget for your home. Brilliant light switch also connects to several of your home’s smart gadgets such as Nest, Alexa, Sonos Speaker, Ring doorbell system, and more. Starting at $200.00 per panel, Brilliant Switch is a costly addition but this innovative new gadget gives your home a brain.
4. Amazon Echo and Echo Dot
This smart home “must” is quickly finding it’s way into every home, world wide. Alexa and Echo Dot, is a voice-controlled system that used to play music, make calls, send and receive messages, read the news, set alarms, and even order and Uber or takeout! With the capability of syncing up to Amazon-Fire, Apple Music, Audible, Pandora, and more, you easily find usage and justification for this piece of smart tech in your home. At a price tag of $150.00, the Amazon Echo has many uses to help in your home and is a fantastic smart home gadget. Word to the wise, Alexa has a built in microphone for consumer purposes that is ALWAYS LISTENING…Use responsibly.
5. The Ring II doorbell system
The Ring Video Doorbell, provides you with the capability to see who is at your door from the safety and comfort of your bed or couch. It lets you accept or deny visitor calls if you’re not home, and uses motion detection to alert you of activity on your doorstep even when the bell hasn’t been rung. By working off your home’s Wifi and mobile data, the 1080HD camera will alert your smart phone of any activity at your door step day or night. For an extra $3.00 a month, you can pay for cloud storage and have all moments video recorded for later purposes if desired. The newest model also has a 2 way intercom system, and infrared night vision. For that extra bit of security at a relatively inexpensive cost of $199.00, this doorbell is the must have for any smart home.

With so many smart gadgets available, some better than others, these products can make our homes better, safer, and more convenient. 2018 is going to be a big tech year and the “smart home” business is growing evermore advanced daily. If you can pick-up just one of these items this year, you’ll be headed in the right direction. I’m still anxiously awaiting the release for Rosie the robot maid, but I may have to hold my breath for awhile.
The “start up” smart tech company, Brilliant, has emerged out of nowhere and is revolutionizing the home light switch as we know it.
The game changer
In 2017, Brilliant brought their prototype “smart control panel” into production and into our homes. This new revolutionary control panel was quickly recognized as an innovative way to fully integrate all of your home tech. In a sense giving your home a brain. By using the digital touch screen or simple verbal commands, this switch can control your homes lights, air conditioning, intercom system, video surveillance, music and much more.
Brilliant’s Bright Future
Brilliant’s new smart switch made a lot of buzz at the 2018 tech convention CES in Las Vegas. Right from the get go, you see Brilliant has an eye for what the consumer and home owner wants. By adding the ability to access Alexa, Sonos speaker, Nest thermostat, and even take photos, this control panel immediately stands out amongst it’s competitors. Wink and Belkin did beat Brilliant to the home control panels market, but Brilliant has quickly jumped ahead of the with its many features such as a built in camera and even the ability to make video calls. But these additional features do come at a cost. The Wink Relay control panel can be purchased off amazon for $90 per panel, while Brilliant is selling their basic for $200. Their four switch panel is priced at $399.99. Brilliant has offered a $50 discount for pre-ordering their panels directly from their website, by they are expected to be the full $200 once it hits store shelves later in February 2018.

With all new technology, there is an expected period of trial and error. It will take some time for Brilliant to work all the kinks out.
For your entire home to be connected you will need a panel in every room. At up to $400.00 per panel, this can get costly. Granted, once everything in connected, it’s pretty amazing.
My thoughts
Brilliant is clearly onto something big here. It may have initial hiccups like any new production, but once they oil this machine they created, I see it in every single home.
