Gorilla Glass 6 Unveiled for New Oppo Smartphone

Corning, the company that makes the ultra-strong glass Gorilla Glass, has an even stronger variant on the way. Called Gorilla Glass 6, it’s their strongest one yet, and it’s a doozy. This time around, the glass-maker will ship it first with the newest Oppo flagship phone, on that is as-yet unnamed. However, Oppo has a solid track record in China of making cutting-edge phones.

    Oppo: Chinese Innovators

While in the West Apple, Samsung and Google are the biggest names in smartphones, China is a different market indeed. Chinese smartphone makers like Xiaomi, OnePlus and Oppo dominate the market there. While Americans tend to measure their success with the newest models of cars, in China it’s more common to see wealthy people flaunting their new phones. This is due to a number of factors, but primarily is due to the ubiquity of public transit and relative lack of usefulness of personal vehicles.

Oppo, for their part, is a highly-respected and excellent brand. Their phones tend towards the higher-end of smartphones, and their most recent designs are reminiscent of Apple’s iPhone X. Design features like the edge-to-edge screen, minimized bezels, phone notch and glass back are mainstays in the Chinese market. In fact, these designs are even seen on mid- to low-end phones by some manufacturers.

    Corning and Gorilla Glass 6

The name Gorilla Glass should sound familiar: it’s the screen and back of most modern smartphones. If your smartphone is mid- to high-end, has a glass back or it generally just durable, odds are good it’s Corning’s Gorilla Glass. That is to say, if you’re a fan of high-end smartphones, odds are good you’ll be seeing Gorilla Glass 6 in the US soon.

The next Oppo flagship is due out in a matter of weeks, which means we could see Gorilla Glass 6 in the US as soon as the next few months. The newest batch of phones from Apple, Samsung, LG and Google are all due out this fall. It seems likely that many of these new phones will come with the newest, toughest material from Corning.

The new Gorilla Glass is rated for at least 15 drops from one meter off the ground. That’s double the number Gorilla Glass 5 could handle, which inspires a great amount of confidence. One of the biggest issues with glass-backed phones is durability. As such, it’s good that smartphone manufacturers are teaming with Corning to make them more durable.

  • Oppo R15 Pro: Worth the Buy?

Oppo R15 Pro: Worth the Buy?

You might have never heard of Chinese smartphone brand Oppo. Odds are good you’ve heard of their sibling company, OnePlus, though. Oppo, ironically, is the bigger brand in China, but OnePlus tends to steal headlines with their bold designs. The newest Oppo phone, the Oppo R15 Pro, is out now. Is it a worthy competitor in the crowded Android market, or is the brand’s obscurity in the US warranted? Let’s find out.

    Design

The R15 Pro is a very clean, modern-looking phone, with a big 6.28-inch display. It sports an iPhone X-style notch, and, in fact, is very much an homage to the iPhone. The Color OS spin on Android OS is pretty much a one-to-one recreation of iOS 11, which isn’t exactly a bad thing. It does make the phone feel unoriginal, but it doesn’t detract from the end user experience.

The Oppo R15 Pro has asolid make, too. The phone sports a headphone jack, unlike some newer phones, and has a metal back. That somewhat old-fashioned design decision is underscored by the phone’s charging port, which is micro-USB. The charging port works fine, but it is odd to see such an old port when USB-C is officially the preferred charging method of other android phones.

    Cameras

The cameras on this phone are quite solid. It has two back-facing cameras for portrait mode, and pictures taken in it look fine, if a little washed out. The back cameras are both 20-megapixel, while the front one is 16. Pictures taken normally look pretty good, considering this phone has a mid-range price! It even sports automatic HDR that looks really great.

    Oppo R15 Pro Performance

While design and camera quality are important, the actual phone performance is the big deal. The R15 doesn’t disappoint, but it’s certainly no powerhouse. Sporting a 2.3GHz octa-core Kirin 970 processor, the phone does okay in most tasks. Gaming and other processor-intensive tasks are a little less snappy than on higher-end phones, but it’s usually fine.

The battery life is rather excellent, only a fraction worse than the OnePlus 6, which is still impressive. You’ll likely finish the day with a good chunk of battery left, which is great.

    Bottom Line

The final word on the R15 Pro? It’s an excellent phone for its mid-level price. Coming in around $515, this phone has no glaring drawbacks and works reasonably well in most tasks. If you like the look of iOS but want to stick with an affordable Android, consider getting an R15 Pro. You’ll also get a ton of odd looks from people who have no idea what phone you have, which is cool!

Soon the OnePlus 6 Check Out What We Know Already

We have a launch date for The OnePlus 6  and it is May 16, which is next week, and with a huge number of leaks – and official teasers from OnePlus itself – we have a pretty good idea of what you can expect. OnePlus will reveal its next all-powerful flagship at an event on 16 May. The Oppo-owned brand has even sold 1,000 tickets to fans ahead of the launch, just as it did for the OnePlus 5T, except on a larger scale. The London-based event will kick off at 5PM BST local time (6pm CET/12pm Eastern Time/9am Pacific Time).

Dubbed “The Speed You need”, OnePlus’ big launch event will be livestreamed on YouTube. The OnePlus 6 will be replacing the OnePlus 5T (which is now off sale in the UK, Europe and US). The 5T was already one of the more impressive phones of 2017, finally bringing the taller display that’s fashionable among the big brands, as well as improvements to the camera. The OnePlus 6 promises to be even better.

    What We Know

There have been a few details released so we have a pretty good idea of what to expect.  First off it will The internals will be powerful, with the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 platform as well as up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. It’s going to feature a longer screen, complete with a notch, and that the back panel is going to be built from a custom designed glass consisting of five nano-coating layers. I’ll also be a waterproof device.

As for the look of this thing we have gone from a thin, plastic OnePlus One to a OnePlus 5T built from a solid block of beautifully finished aluminium within four years. The Midnight Black and Sandstone White finishes are among the finest you’ll see on a solid metal device. Its a good looking device, no issues there.

    The Final Thought

A big part of the appeal is that the phone rarely has any major compromises in a mobile that costs significantly less than the likes of the Samsung and Apple flagships. The OnePlus 6 will be a flagship killer and will defenitley be a phone to watch this year, ill have a full Smartphone spotlight on this mambojamba as soon as it is released.
