Fortnite’s Durr Burger has Appeared in the California Desert

A strange ARG has begun in advance of the fifth season of Fortnite. A few weeks ago, an in-game even led to a rocket launch that then caused a series of temporal rifts. Following the appearance of the rifts, some have grown considerably. The rifts have also begun to absorb certain notable landmarks from around the map. One such landmark, the large Durr Burger mascot from the Greasy Grove area, has appeared somewhere else. Nowhere in the Fortnite world, mind you, but somewhere in the real world.

    Durr Burger Sighting

The dumb-looking mascot for the fictional Durr Burger restaurant was spotted by photographer Sela Shiloni, who is not a gamer. Shiloni was understandably a bit freaked out by the presence of a giant, googly-eyed burger with a lolling tongue. After spotting it and posting it to various social media sites, Fornite players quickly informed the photographer that he had found the missing burger! A bit of digging on Google maps yielded coordinates for the burger. Since, several streamers and enthusiasts have traveled to the location to see what’s going on.

At the site, they are greeted by “secret agents” who encourage the tourists to stay back. The area is an anomaly, visitors are told, and it could be dangerous. Some are given promo codes for Fortnite goodies. Others are given a phone number to call; the number plays an odd, garbled version of the rift sound from the game.

Future Items to Appear in Our World?

The giant burger mascot will likely not be the only Fortnite landmark appearing in the real world. The fifth season of the game will begin in earnest tomorrow, and with it we expect to see some major changes in the world map. The rift in the sky over the map has grown larger every day since it appeared, and that will likely come to a head at the start of season five. What this means for the future of Fortnite, and for the ARG that seems to be developing in our own world, remains to be seen. Either way, we’ll be sure to see you on the battlefield!

  • Elon Musk Creates Small Submarine to Helped Trapped Thailand Kids

Elon Musk Creates Small Submarine to Helped Trapped Thailand Kids

On Saturday, July 7th, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that his company was working on a small submersible that might be useful in helping to rescue the trapped soccer team in Thailand. At the time of this writing, scuba divers have already rescued eight of the twelve trapped soccer players. Musk, however, went ahead with the production of the submersible, saying it may yet help in the rescue effort. In any event, such a vessel could be helpful in future scenarios like this, should another rescue need to be undertaken.

    The Trapped Team

The team became trapped in the cave while exploring it after a soccer match. While they were inside the cave, monsoon rains surprised them and flooded significant portions of the cave, trapping them inside. They were trapped in the cave on June 23rd, which means they’ve been trapped for nearly two weeks at the time of this writing. On Friday, July 6th, one of the volunteer rescue workers, a former Thai Navy SEAL, died during the rescue effort. This has underscored just how dangerous the rescue effort is, and how much peril the boys are in.

The Submersible Created by Elon Musk and SpaceX

The submersible was created from the liquid oxygen transfer tube of a Falcon rocket. The idea behind the vessel is that it could be an alternative for divers to try if conventional rescue methods prove ineffective. For instance, if any of the boys are too tired or not aware enough to swim on their own. In such a case, the vessel could allow even an unconscious passenger to be pulled to safety by divers.

However, the presence of such a large, metal vessel could prove dangerous to both the divers and the passenger. The cramped cave has some choke points so narrow that divers have to remove their oxygen tanks to slip through. While the tank might be just narrow enough to slip through, it could cause some complications.

As the team has already rescued most of the boys, it seems their strategy is working. Thankfully, they have access to this technology now, should it be needed. Here’s hoping everyone is safely rescued, and no more of the rescue team is hurt in the effort.

  • Listen Up: Sony HT-Z9F 3.1 Feature Roundup

Listen Up: Sony HT-Z9F 3.1 Feature Roundup

Sound bars are a great way to maximize the sound from your TV without taking up considerable real estate in your living room. While many sound bar options are out there, Sony remains a reliable and excellent maker of the technology. Their biggest strength, of course, is their processing, and the HT-Z9F 3.1 is no exception: it boasts incredible sound thanks to its processors.

    Sound Quality

The first important consideration when reviewing a sound bar, of course, is the sound quality. This particular sound bar delivers on that front: dialogue is clear, sounds are crisp, and bass is heavy. Whether you’re listening to music or watching action movies, you’ll be impressed by how balanced and undistorted the sound is. You can clearly make out dialogue over rumbling explosions, and sounds have a certain space in between them. All of this, of course, is bolstered by the bar’s excellent surround sound. You can feel the space between events on-screen, or the shape of a room that audio was recorded in. That may all sound a bit confusing, but when you hear it you’ll understand.

    Features and Ports

The HT-Z9F 3.1 has ARC HDMI, optical digital audio, 3.5mm and Ethernet ports all available. You can hook pretty much anything into this sound bar and play audio through it, which is excellent. It also has an IR repeater sending signals through, which is great for set-ups that have the bar blocking your TV. Wi-Fi and Chromecast are supported, which makes this feel very modern and high-end.

HT-Z9F 3.1 Pricing and Bottom Line

The HT-Z9F 3.1 costs between $800 and $900, making it a somewhat premium package. However, when compared to full-scale surround systems and some other high-end sound bars, that price is rather impressive. If you’re looking for big sound from a small bar, Sony’s newest entry is a great piece of technology. If you don’t mind paying a bit of money, your living room will sound like a movie theater in no time. All of that from such a little bar is a pretty big deal!

  • 2019 Subaru Impreza Price Revealed

    2019 Subaru Impreza Price Revealed

The pricing information for the 2019 Subaru Impreza has been revealed, and Subaru fans have reason to be excited. The newest entry in Subaru’s mid-sized range only costs $100 more than last year’s, which is pretty incredible. Considering all the great features in it, the price tag of $19,480 for a manual transmission is a steal. This vehicle makes a great first new car for young adults! It has power locks, power windows and side mirrors, all great modern amenities to see made standard.

    2019 Subaru Impreza Features

The first thing to note about the 2019 Impreza is the better gas mileage over last year’s model. For one thing, that helps justify the extra $100 price tag, as it’ll pay itself off in gas soon. For another thing, it’s a great feature for a car of this price that will likely be many young adults’ first new car. Other notables in performance are some Subaru mainstays like symmetrical all-wheel drive and a respectable 4-cylinder engine. The Impreza won’t be winning any street races, but it’ll get you to the grocery store and to work!

The biggest notable feature in the inside of the Impreza is the infotainment screen. The big, bold, bright 6.5-inch display is compatible with Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto, which will blow your mind if this is your first car from this decade. As for the other things worth noting in the interior, it’s an all-around quality make and quite comfortable for the price.

    Bottom Line

If you’re in the market for a dependable, no-frills car to get you to work and back, you’re likely going to love the Impreza. If you’ve never owned a car made in the last ten years, there’s few better than the Impreza to get you started! The best part, of course, is that it costs barely more than $20,000 for an automatic. That’s a price you just can’t beat!

  • Ten Sci-Fi Innovations that Became Real

Ten Sci-Fi Innovations that Became Real

The world of science fiction is dominated by high-tech advancements that make life easier (or more dangerous) for the characters. For more than a century, real-world scientists have been inspired by sci-fi innovations to create new technology. From Star Trek to Star Wars, today we’re talking about life imitating art!

    Virtual Reality

Many people enjoy VR headsets every day to explore virtual worlds. The future dreamt of in tales such as Tron and Blade Runner look a bit more believable when viewed through this lens. While we might not have fully-immersive, full-body recreations of reality, we do have a close visual and auditory approximation. For whatever reason, we are fascinated with being someone else, and VR is our window to that fantasy. While VR has had a rough history (Virtual Boy, anyone?) it’s stronger than ever and commands a good bit of public attention. Oculus Rift and Microsoft’s own VR are two big names to watch in the VR field.

    Wireless Earbuds

In Ray Bradbury’s classic novel, Fahrenheit 451, a number of citizens are described as having “seashells” attached to their ears. The seashells play calming ocean sounds, music and talk shows. In the context of Bradbury’s novel, they are indicative of a dystopia of disinterested, unintelligent and cruel people. In our own world, the existence of truly wireless in-ear headphones wouldn’t be a reality until the last decade or so. Apple’s AirPod technology is a notable example. Bradbury would be pleased to see that we’re not burning books to withhold their contents, in spite of our technological advancements.

    Robotic Prosthetics

In Star Wars, the iconic scene of Luke getting his new, prosthetic hand calibrated has two large impacts on the audience. First, it reminds us that Luke could become just like his cyborg father, Darth Vader. Second, it reminds us how freaking awesome robot hands are. Just like Luke, there are people in the real world who have benefitted from recent advancements in prosthetic technology. The technology uses receivers that can receive electric signals from the brain and translate them into fine motor control. This tech may have been inspired by fiction, but it’s helping to improve real lives!

    Video Calling

In our world, video calls are commonplace and happen every day. However, in the 1920’s, when silent film The Metropolis was released, they were an impossible fantasy. Since that film’s antagonist used video communication on the silver screen for the first time, numerous sci-fi tales have used the technology. Star Trek is notable for its many tense negotiations between ship captains via video transmissions. In our world, thankfully, we’re not dodging photon torpedoes shot by hostile aliens, we’re just calling grandma to make sure she’s doing okay.

    Space Travel

Nearly every sci-fi tale ever told features space travel in some capacity. Indeed, our cultural subconscious holds that man’s future lies with the stars. While our lofty ambitions are still generations from being realized, they’re much closer than any other time in human history. The International Space Station is evidence of this, as are the many deep-space probes we send to the deepest reaches of our star system. While living on alien planets and traveling between stars remain firmly in the realm of fiction, exploring space is still a reality for our species.

    Cell Phones

In the original Star Trek series, the main characters use a rather wild invention called a tricorder to communicate over vast distances. While we’re being a bit tongue-in-cheek, of course, the idea of a handheld communication device is nothing new in sci-fi. However, the unprecedented computing power of modern handsets certainly reminds one of the types of technology dreamed up by writers from the middle of the last century. Indeed, you carry more computing power with you than what went to the moon in the 60’s. That actually is wild!

    Tractor Beams

British scientists actually invented this iconic piece of Star Trek tech! A sci-fi innovation long thought to be little more than science fantasy is now reality. While the real-world iteration of this tech is on a much smaller scale than the Star Trek version, it’s the same principal. By manipulating particles within the body, the scientists hope that the technology will revolutionize surgery. Thanks to the tractor beam technology, surgical some surgical procedures that were previously invasive may become much safer, non-invasive endeavors!

    3D Printing

There’s no technology more optimistic and encouraging that Star Trek’s replicator. The technology behind it is likely also responsible for the teleportation technology employed in the show. However, replicator tech is much more feasible in our world, but under a different name: 3D printing. We don’t make much of it now, but 3D printing is a huge step towards sci-fi innovations becoming reality. Where the replicators were concerned primarily with food, our 3D printers are versatile and perform tons of tasks. And yes, 3D printing food is one of them!

    Nuclear Weaponry

Sci-fi innovations aren’t always optimistic, and nowhere is that more evident than in HG Wells prediction of the atom bomb. In his novel “The World Set Free,” Wells describes “atomic bombs” that “detonate indefinitely,” after reading theories put forth by scientist Ernest Rutherford. Wells’ versions of the bombs were hand-thrown and burned for as long as seventeen days, a far cry from the bombs of our own world. However, the idea of a “nuclear bomb” may have even gone on to influence the research and discovery of true atomic weapons, as life attempted to imitate art.

Coolest Sci-Fi Innovation Becoming Real: Cybernetic Soldier Suits

Tony Stark sports visually-arresting, butt-kicking super-armor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It originally debuted in 1968, but it looked a bit clunkier and less awesome back then. That said, the original Iron Man comics would go on to inspire countless robot-piloting works of fiction. Notably, in our world, tech like Stark’s is close to being reality: the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit, or TALOS, is in development by the US Military. Yes, that name sounds like something Hydra would send after Tony in a comic book, but it’s a real piece of military technology. It incorporates technology that looks like Tony’s Bleeding Edge armor seen in Avengers: Infinity War, using liquid armor that solidifies at the operator’s command. Talk about sci-fi coming to life!

  • iPhone Feature Roundup: How do They Compare?

iPhone Feature Roundup: How do They Compare?

A lot of people took notice when the iPhone X was announced to retail for $1,000. As the first mass-market smartphone to break the $1,000 price tag, it must be something special, right? Apple seemed to be hedging their bets slightly, and also released the iPhone 8, an $800 option that more closely resembles previous iterations of the iPhone. In order to help you with figuring out which one is right for you, we’ve got an iPhone feature roundup to break down the difference between the two flavors of iPhone.

    Price

The first one is the most obvious, and we’ve already been over it, but it bears repeating. The iPhone X is truly the best smartphone in the world, and its price reflects that. $1,000 is a lot of money to pay for a phone, but that buys you a ton of features. The iPhone 8 is no slouch, either, to be fair, and costs a respectable $800. Both phones are on the premium side, so the question becomes: what does $200 buy you?

    Face ID vs Fingerprint Scanner

Face ID is convenient, fast and secure. Apple was the first to market with very secure, very accurate facial recognition software. The depth-sensing front cameras in the iPhone X’s much-maligned notch can read your face in the blink of an eye. The iPhone 8, on the other hand, sports the same fingerprint scanner iPhones have been using for years. It’s secure, it’s fast and it’s pretty much the same as you’d expect. It works fine in most circumstances, but if you’re wearing gloves or if your hands are wet, it’s a no-go.

Face ID isn’t the only use of those front cameras, though: the animated “Animoji” technology is exclusive to iPhone X. It’s silly, it’s cute and you absolutely want it. Is it worth $200? Your call.

    OLED Screen, Bezels

The iPhone X has a huge, bright and gorgeous OLED display that looks sharp even in direct sunlight. It’s hard to describe, but it simply has an alluring glow to it that dazzles the eye. If that sounds overly romantic, you probably haven’t seen one in person. The iPhone 8, on the other hand, sports a Retina display that looks fine, if somewhat tame compared to the iPhone X.

Interestingly, the iPhone 8 Plus is bigger than the iPhone X by a good bit, yet the iPhone X still sports a bigger screen, thanks to its nearly bezel-free design. Almost the entire front face of the phone is screen, with the exception of the notch.

    Home Button

A huge change in the iPhone X is the lack of a home button. If you’re a home button faithful, you want an iPhone 8, period. It’s a pretty big change, and if you’ve been using iPhones since 2007, it will certainly take some getting used to. That said, the gesture controls are intuitive, fast and slick, and you will get used to them.

    iPhone Feature Bottom Line

One way to look at the iPhone X is as a proof-of-concept for the way future iPhones will work. So, by getting an iPhone 8, you’ll have a nostalgic, old-school style iPhone experience. However, you’re likely only delaying the inevitable. That $200 upcharge can be viewed as the price of entry to a new era of iPhone. If you’re the kind of person that gets excited by bleeding edge tech, you want an iPhone X. If you want the same experience you’ve grown accustomed to, the 8 is more your speed.

  • Netflix to Stop Offering User Reviews

Netflix to Stop Offering User Reviews

After July 30th, Netflix users will no longer be able to write reviews for shows on the website. After August, you won’t be able to read any pre-existing reviews, either. Netflix broke this news recently and stated that the reason behind it was lack of interest in the feature. According to the streaming company, users have used the user reviews function less and less as time has gone on. As such, they don’t see a reason to support the feature any longer.

User Reviews Going the Way of the 5-Star Review

Those who used Netflix before last summer may remember the old review system being on a 5-star scale. Last year, however, Netflix replaced that system with a simpler thumbs-up, thumbs-down system. The Pandora Radio-like thumbs system resulted in a 200 percent increase in positive reviews, according to Netflix. The streaming company reported that the thumbs system led to better profile matching and show suggestions for users. As such, there’s good precedence for Netflix trimming functionality that is no longer useful from the service.

    Lack of Support

The user review function wasn’t the most well-supported function on the service, for what it’s worth. The reviews could only be accessed or written through the desktop version of the site. Apps on phone, Roku and Smart TV platformers didn’t have access to the feature. As such, the declining usage can likely be ascribed to people not being aware of it. In truth, if Netflix was interested in users writing reviews on their shows, they would have made the function easier to access.

That said, Netflix was never considered a review platform. It seems unlikely anyone will be too disappointed by this news. It makes sense, following Netflix’s pattern of trimming features that don’t serve the core experience of watching TV and movies. The company has offered no suggestions as to whether any new features will replace the written reviews, though it seems unlikely.

  • Most Hotly Anticipated Gadgets of 2018

Most Hotly Anticipated Gadgets of 2018

Believe it or not, we’re nearly halfway through 2018. That means there’s only a few months left in the year to get hyped about upcoming gadgets! Don’t worry, though, because we’ve got a list for you. Today, we’re looking at the ten most anticipated gadgets of 2018! Get ready to get hyped, because these things are awesome!

    Nintendo 64 Classic

After a patent filing for the name, Nintendo has made no indication they’re working on the N64 Classic. However, the odds that they aren’t are incredibly low. The NES and SNES Classic mini-consoles sold through their entire production runs and were immensely well-received. Well, except for how hard it was to find them. However, recently Nintendo has addressed the supply issues and the mini-consoles can be found for MSRP on most store shelves. If they were to follow this trend with a miniature N64 console, we’d be ecstatic, and this writer would have one on launch day. Come on Nintendo, make it a reality so I can throw money at you!

    Atari VCS

Consider us cautiously optimistic regarding Atari’s upcoming console. The console was a Kickstarter success, but so was the Ouya, and we all know how that turned out. Similarly, the last time Atari released a console, it didn’t exactly go well. You may have noticed that the Atari Jaguar was the very last console they released. Well, until the VCS, that is. If it ever releases. The concept, however, seems awesome: a retro-inspired, modern console. It’ll play both old Atari titles and brand-new games. Older titles will ship with the console, and you can download new ones. It’s aiming to be the best of both worlds! Let’s just hope it doesn’t collapse under its own ambition.

    New MacBooks

While there’s no definitive word on this front, we’re due for a new MacBook release. Apple’s flagship laptop has been somewhat lacking in love lately, largely lagging behind their phone releases. However, there’s still a ton of Mac users out there who’d love a shiny new machine to edit videos and create content on. There’s no better computers for content creators than Mac, and they deserve a powerful enough laptop to keep up with their demanding software. A new processor and some more RAM wouldn’t be a bad thing, but expect to pay that Apple Tax.

    Apple Watch Series 4

While the Apple Watch has been around since 2015, it’s seen little in the way of design updates. The Series 3 watches look largely the same as the Series One. Series Four is rumored to bring a suite of changes to the wearable tech. One such change is the removal of buttons in favor of solid-style nubs that use haptic feedback. These will likely help waterproof the watch, as well as make it more durable in general. Other rumored changes include a dedicated watch face store and larger display. In any event, we’re excited to find out more!

    Google Pixel Watch

When the Pixel phone was released, it was clearly an answer to the iPhone. Google has been attempting to take bites out of Apple at every turn. As such, it only makes sense that Google would like to go head-to-head with the Apple Watch. The Pixel Watch is currently just a rumor, but with Google confirming the resurrection of Wear OS, we’d be surprised if we didn’t hear news of a Google-branded watch to go with the Google-branded OS. Maybe a launch for the watch could come alongside the new Pixel 3 this Fall? Time will tell, pun intended.

    Nintendo Switch Online Features

The Switch is getting its much-hyped paid online service this fall. There are a few notable features coming with the service. The first is cloud back-ups for game saves, a much-requested feature of the system. The second is the introduction of Netflix-style retro game rentals. Anyone who pays for the $20 per year service will be able to play the retro titles, some of which will have new online multiplayer functions. Of course, if you don’t have the service, you won’t be able to play Fortnite or Splatoon 2 against your friends. As such, many will be getting the service regardless of what games are offered through it.

Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL

Google’s Pixel phones have impressed on the Android side of things. If ever there was a contender for “best camera,” it’s the Pixel 2. As such, we’re excited to see what kinds of tech will be jammed into the third generation of Pixel phones. Google’s newest Android OS, Android P, will likely release with the new Pixel phones. We can expect them in the fall of the year, just in time to compete with the new iPhones and the new Galaxy phones. This fall will be a bit of a phone battlefield.

    Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Samsung’s next phone is as hotly anticipated as any phone this year. Many notch-haters would rather get a Galaxy Note, as it won’t sport any notch at all. Another big draw is the headphone jack, which many phones are foregoing in favor of waterproofing. The Note is also rumored to have an in-screen fingerprint scanner, although rumors are contradictory at the moment regarding the scanner. That said, Samsung fans are excited about the newest entry in the Galaxy family. Android has some stellar phones coming out this year!

    2018 iPad Pro

Simply put, tablets aren’t cool anymore. The company responsible for inventing the massive smart-device would like to change that, though. There’s currently no word on a potential iPad Pro for this year. However, one rumors as to what it would look like: unlocking with Face ID, sporting no home button. It may even incorporate an OLED screen and carry some variation of the Bionic chip. Changes like that could make for a very appealing (and expensive) iPad indeed. We’ll see if the rumors come true!

Most Anticipated Gadgets of 2018: New iPhones

This year’s iPhone lineup is set to be stellar. Rumor has it that we can expect to see three models this year, two of which will sport OLED screens. Those two phones are clearly an iPhone X-2 (ha) and an iPhone X Plus. That third one is most likely a less-expensive phone with an LED screen. Maybe an iPhone 9? Time will tell. What is certain, though, is that people are excited! The iPhone X is the best phone in the world, by a wide margin, so we’re expecting big things from Apple this year.

  • Galaxy’s Edge: Star Wars Theme Park Coming Soon

Galaxy’s Edge: Star Wars Theme Park Coming Soon

If the words “Star Wars Theme Park” don’t excite you, I don’t know what to say to you, to be honest. While the newest films have received some flak from some unusually agitated “fans,” they have largely reignited the spark of love and adoration in the franchise that Lucas tried to smother with the prequels. In order to capitalize on this sudden surge of interest, Disney’s opening a new theme park to let you live out your own Star Wars adventure. The park, called Galaxy’s Edge, will be added to Disneyland in Anaheim and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando.

When Can I Go Drink with Wookies in the Cantina?

Soon, thankfully! The Anaheim park will be opening next summer, while the Orlando one will be opening in the fall. There’s no hard date set yet, though, so stay posted for more news on that front. The coolest part of the park, however, is the new background story that sets the stage. The park itself is meant to be a planet called Batuu, specifically a region called Black Spire Outpost.

This backstory sets the Outpost as a place away from the grip of the First Order. This is perfect for a theme park, as it allows visitors to enact their fantasies as smugglers, pirates and Jedi in a lawless haven at the edge of known space.

What Things Can You Do in Galaxy’s Edge?

The park is slated to have two as-yet-unnamed rides for guests. One will be a simulated space battle between the First Order and the Rebellion, culminating in the ride landing in a Star Destroyer. The second will be a Millennium Falcon flight simulator. If you perform well, you’ll be commended and could even get a prize! But if you mess up, you might be blacklisted by a bounty hunter and hounded elsewhere in the park.

Disney also promises that creatures from the films and books will be brought to life inside the park. Cryptically, they’ve also stated some will be available to be adopted and brought home. Whether this means they’ll be selling plush versions of them or actually holding adoptions for live cats is unknown. In any event, we’re ecstatic to find out more, and we can’t wait to get our tickets!
