  • Nintendo Switch: First 20 Months in Perspective

Nintendo Switch: First 20 Months in Perspective

The Nintendo Switch was released in March of 2017. In the intervening 20 months it has revitalized a struggling Nintendo and reignited interest in the company’s most exciting properties. Recently, Nintendo showed off that they have sold 8.2 million Switch units in the US alone. That’s… that’s absolutely crazy. Let’s get into it.

Nintendo Switch First 20 Months Retrospective

    nintendo-switch

    The Numbers

8.2 million is one of those numbers that is so big it’s hard to wrap one’s head around. However, for comparison’s sake, the Switch has sold nearly as many units in 20 months as the PlayStation 2. In the five days between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, the Switch put up better numbers than the Wii did in a similar period.

Also, keep in mind that the system hasn’t even crossed its second holiday season yet. This is just the wind-up to the biggest sales season of the year.

    What This Means

This means that the Nintendo Switch is on track to sell similar unit numbers to some of the most successful home consoles of all time. With numbers like this, it could even post lifetime sales rivaling the PS2 and even the Wii.

That’s nothing but good news for Switch owners. Nintendo was looking pretty lackluster from 2012 when the Wii U was released until the launch of the Switch. There were even some speculating that the Switch was going to end up being a massive failure and spell doom for the company. Some people even suggested the Switch would be Nintendo’s Dreamcast: overly ambitious and destined to bankrupt the company.

    The Road Ahead

Switch owners have a lot of great things to look forward to. In just one week, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate hits the system. This is sure to cause another huge jump in sales for the company as fans of the juggernaut series rush out to buy systems.

Down the line, 2019 is a huge year for the system. Fire Emblem, Yoshi and Animal Crossing have all been confirmed to release before year’s end. There is speculation that Metroid Prime 4 might land before the year is out, and Game Freak confirmed that the next Pokemon main series entry would be releasing in 2019.

In short, the future for Nintendo is bright. Time to buy some shades.

  • The New Samsung A9 Is Here!

The New Samsung A9 Is Here!

The Samsung A9 is one of the best affordable new options from Samsung! The new Samsung A9 smartphone boasts some serious upgrades over its predecessors. This model is a mid-grade phone that is a great option for people who want a phone with plenty of style and features but are also looking for something a lot more budget-friendly.

You’ll get all-new design features and the latest technology such as a quad camera, a fast-charging battery, and an octa-Core processor with 6GB or 8GB RAM. With plenty of great tech in this small streamlined package, the cutting edge A9 is a much more affordable option than the S9 and really gives you your money’s worth. If you are looking for a new smartphone on a budget, read on to learn about the new Samsung A9.

    Samsung A9

    Four Cameras

Notably, the A9 sports an absurd number of cameras on the back. The Google Pixel and iPhone X have made Bokeh-style portraits a normal sight with their dual-camera setups. However, Samsung is going crazy with the cameras on the A9, giving it four.

The four cameras allow for a number of crazy photography tricks. Portrait mode, of course, is still here. A similar mode that allows for selective focus of subjects is also available, as are low-light modes. Additionally, there is a super-wide mode for vacation and travel shots to capture wide vistas. Pretty much any kind of normal photography you want to do is a breeze with the A9.

The four rear cameras and a single front camera provide greater functionality, allowing you to take nearly flawless photos. This combination of cameras allows the user to adjust background blur and get a more accurate depth. The low light camera feature is also very clear and highly defined.

    Battery

The battery in this phone is huge, allowing for a full day of apps and activity without draining the whole battery. That’s a huge plus in an era when smartphones are a huge part of our lives. Additionally, in the event your phone dies, it supports fast-charging. As a bonus, the phone also ships with a fast-charger, which is a huge value.

While many phones support fast-charging, few of them actually ship with one in the box. With an extended battery life, you’ll rarely be separated from your phone, and when you are, it won’t be for long thanks to the included fast charger.

    Specs

The specs on the A9 are impressive for any phone, especially a mid-range phone. It has a large 6.38″ AMOLED screen which makes watching movies and playing games much more enjoyable. This phone also has an octa-core processor and fingerprint sensor built into the screen. When it comes to the multi-camera feature things get interesting.

The main camera is a 24-megapixel f/1.7 camera and it works in conjunction with a 10-megapixel telephoto lens for 2x zoom shots. There is also an 8-megapixel ultrawide angle 120-degree camera for landscapes. The 5-megapixel camera is the depth sensor that allows the camera to adjust for blur.

In addition, the A9 has an octa-core processor with the option for 6 or 8GB RAM so you don’t have to worry about slow speeds. As for internal storage, you can get up to 128GB with the A9 but you can also add up to 512GB via a microSD card.

One of the cool features that have people buzzing is the array of colors that are available. This model comes in cotton candy pink, lemonade blue, and caviar black. The texture of the phone also allows it to shimmer in the light, making it very eye-catching.

    Bottom Line

When it comes to affordability, the A9 is hard to beat for people who want impressive performance, technology, and a quality camera like you’d find in more expensive models. The A9 will sell for approximately $450 to $500, depending on the model you want, which is about half the price of the S9 and Note 9 Galaxy models. While you won’t get the exact performance specs of those models, if you are looking for a solid smartphone alternative that is almost just as good as some of the top-of-the-line models, you won’t be disappointed in the A9. Indeed, the A9 is a pleasant surprise for the year and proves to be a real gem among the insanely priced smartphones that are flooding the market today.

  • Stop Losing Luggage!..Best Luggage Tracking Options

Stop Losing Luggage!..Best Luggage Tracking Options

We’ve all been there. Waiting for your luggage to come around that conveyor belt, patiently standing around, just to realize that you’ve seen that pink suitcase come around three times and there’s no sign of your luggage.

If you’ve ever waited impatiently at a baggage claim only to slowly realize your luggage is not among the bags and boxes and suitcases on the carousel, you understand the frustration that can come from lost luggage. If you travel often, it’s not a question of if, but of when, you will find yourself standing in an airport somewhere wondering where your luggage is. Thanks to innovative technology, however, there is a solution that can help you keep track of your luggage no matter where it ends up. Luggage GPS locators are a small devices that attach to your luggage and work in much the same way as a cell phone over a GSM cellular network, helping to reunite you with your lost luggage, rather than waiting for the people who lost your luggage in the first place to find it for you.

These devices are designed to alert travelers to the location of their luggage quickly and easily, and there are quite a few to choose from, including LugLoc, Tile, Trackr and TrakDot. If you’re a frequent traveler or even an occasional traveler worried about keeping track of your luggage, keep reading to learn more about this innovative technology, so you never have to wonder where your luggage ended up again.

    Best Luggage Tracking Options

    Trak Dot

TrakDot is a popular device for keeping track of your luggage while you travel by using cellphone towers to pinpoint an approximate location. TrakDot uses two AA batteries and is a bit smaller than other gps tracking devices. The fairly small device fits right inside your luggage is fully airline compliant and you can track where the device is within a radius through the Trak Dot website.

TrakDot retails for around $50, which includes unlimited tracking in the first year, and then $19.99 per year after that, making this a great value for people who frequently travel.

    LugLoc

A popular option, LugLoc is a GPS-enabled luggage tracker that you can pick up for roughly $60 (less if you purchase multiple units).  It’s about $5 per month for the tracking service and access to the mobile tracking app, and you get your first 30 days with the service for free. In order for the device to be able to send a signal from anywhere in the world, it has to be equipped with a SIM card, much like your cell phone uses. LugLoc comes with its own SIM card, allowing your lost luggage to be located virtually anywhere it may end up. Once the luggage is tracked, the location will be sent to your mobile app.

LugLoc offers several payment options, including paying only when you use the service. For frequent travelers, however, paying monthly may be the more cost-effective option. To use the device, you’ll need to charge it before you leave, and a single charge lasts up to 15 days.

While the device is fairly accurate in locating your lost luggage, you won’t get an exact location. The LugLoc tracker tells you where your luggage is within a radius, allowing you to narrow down where it’s gone. That way, you have a good sense of whether it even came on the plane with you, is lost somewhere in the airport, or has been accidentally taken off.

    Other Options

While those are the two most popular GPS-enabled devices, they’re not the only tracking solutions available. Other luggage tracking options include smaller devices, such as Tile and Trackr, which can be attached to a variety of things, including luggage, keys, purses and backpacks, so you’re never left wondering where you’ve left something.

Mainly these are used for keys or the remote control to the TV, but they can function as luggage trackers, too. These tiny devices are about the size of a quarter, have replaceable batteries and can easily be attached to your luggage or placed inside. They work by using Bluetooth technology, so they aren’t as far-reaching as other luggage tracking options, but can be a great way to locate lost items in your vicinity, which is especially great when traveling.

Regardless of which luggage tracking device you choose, be sure to consider cost and read user reviews, so you can get the best device for your needs and budget. Once you’ve found the one that works best for you, you can say goodbye to lost luggage forever with these handy devices! Happy travels!

  • Galaxy Note 9 “Best Phone for Seniors”?

Galaxy Note 9 “Best Phone for Seniors”?

I spent much of the prime youthful years of my life teaching senior citizens how to cope and use their smartphones. I would host seminars 3 times a week inside the verizon stores for just this. For years I always recommended the iphones to our senior customers, but now im starting to think the Galaxy Note 9 may be the  best phone for seniors. Here is why…

While I have said the Galaxy Note 9 puts powerful technology in the hands of the tech geeks and gamers who demand more powerful and more screen from their smartphones. It most certainly boast innovative features and design make it the only phone to keep up with the next generation of  senior users. There is 2 big reasons I believe the Samsung note is the best phone for our senior community, intuitiveness and screen size.

    The Intuitive Galaxy note 9

For years the greatest generation and early gen x crowds where taught everything the way it had been taught before. There were always steps, reasons and an order to everything, weather it was building a fence or cooking a recipe. There was a memorization to everything they learned. That’s not the case with technology today, you can not memorize the steps it takes to make a phone call or send a text because its always different depending on the screen you are on. You have to look at your phone like you are Detective Columbo, Whats here that wasn’t here before? What’s not here that was here before, and what has changed? The great thing is our seniors have started to master this, and that’s why I think the Note 9 is a great step up for them.

The Note 9 offers a lot of intuitive features that make expanding on basic use very easily. Samsung has improved the positioning of the fingerprint scanner for this large phone. This time it sits centrally, below the camera. This should be a much more intuitive fit for your index finger, particularly in a giganto-phone like this.  Making it easier for seniors to unlock their phone when they forgot their passwords.

    I Can See that Screen

the Note 9 is the megalodon of the Galaxy line-up. And this year it’s bigger than ever, offering a 6.4in screen that pips its predecessor by an all-important 0.1in. Galaxy Note 9’s design is pretty familiar. It has a curved sheet of Gorilla Glass on the front, slightly less curved Gorilla Glass on the back and diamond-cut aluminium around the sides.   This makes it very easy to see, and in the crisp contrast of the dark on light font, smaller words and Icons tend to stand out.The Galaxy Note 9 uses one of Samsung’s ultra-bright, mega-sharp Super AMOLED panels, which lets you choose between reserved, natural colour or tones so bold they barely look real. Really makes the screen pop and extremely easy to see.

Are you worried it’ll be too big for your pockets? The Note 9 measures 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8mm, and weighs 201g. That’s only 0.2mm thicker and 1.6mm wider than the smaller Note 8. Should fit great in those front trouser pockets, I know mine does

    That S pen

One thing i’ve noticed with senior smartphone users is they like the stylus option. This is another great reason for the Galaxy Note 9 and the included S pen. The S Pen stylus can still do all of the note-taking, transcribing, and scribbling that you could want across a wide range of apps, but now it has a whole new suite of functions too. This promotes the S Pen to a surprisingly useful tool for an active senior Note 9 user.

Where Can I Get The Galaxy Note 9?

The 128GB Galaxy Note 9 can be purchased through carriers including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless and Xfinity, along with Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Club, Straight Talk Wireless, Target, Walmart, Samsung.com and the ShopSamsung app.

  • Sega Dreamcast Classic: Could it be Coming Soon?

Sega Dreamcast Classic: Could it be Coming Soon?

The Sega Dreamcast Classic has just turned 20. The short-lived but influential console has a small yet iconic lineup of games. We’d love to see the system revived in the form of a Classic Mini system like the NES Classic. Could the Sega Dreamcast Classic be around the corner?

    Sega Dreamcast Classic

    dreamcast
    Polygon

    Coming Soon?

As of this writing, Sega doesn’t seem to have any immediate plans for a Sega Dreamcast Classic. That doesn’t stop us from speculating what could make one a huge success, though. Released in 1998 originally, the ill-fated Dreamcast is a symbol of a different era of gaming. What could make a Classic Dreamcast an awesome time-capsule from the late 90’s?

    Must-Have Games

The Dreamcast was home to some of the coolest games of the 90’s. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Shenmue, Soul Calibur, and Skies of Arcadia are the obvious inclusions. There are also deep cuts from the library like Canon Spike and Project Justice that would be awesome inclusions.

Crazy Taxi, Power Stone and Jet Set Radio are also major fan-favorites of the system that are surefire inclusions in any Classic console. One game in particular strikes us as an interesting opportunity for Sega: Phantasy Star Online.

    Bring Back Online

The Dreamcast was the first home console with built-in internet functionality. Precious few games used this functionality, chief among them being Phantasy Star Online. If Sega opts to make a Dreamcast Classic, we urge them to make the internet functionality work and include Phantasy Star with the system.

It only makes sense for Sega to be the first to make a classic system with online capabilities. After all, they were originally the first to market with it in the late 90’s!

    How Likely is it?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like Sega has any immediate plans for reviving the ill-fated and much-beloved Dreamcast. The company has made a point of porting many of the classic Dreamcast library to other systems, including Steam.

That doesn’t mean we can’t dream, though. Thinking back to the Dreamcast, it signaled the end of an era. Sega’s constant ambition and drive to innovate ended up spelling its doom. But man, were those some awesome games.

  • Google Pixel Slate: A Worthy iPad Competitor?

Google Pixel Slate: A Worthy iPad Competitor?

Apple is a hard act to follow. Their electronics have been the benchmark for smart devices for more than a decade now. Google now attempts to compete with the iPad with their new Google Pixel Slate. How does the hybrid 2-in-1 stack up, and is it worth the high price tag?

    Google Pixel Slate Review

    google-pixel-slate
    PC Mag

    Strengths

Firstly, this device has great battery life and is reasonably powerful. It should have enough energy from a full charge to get you through a busy day with lots of tabs open and a lot of work on the device.

The Google Pixel Slate is a great device for productivity. If you often use your laptop for typing and browsing the web, you can use a Pixel Slate for largely the same tasks. When it comes to completing tasks and staying on the ball, the Pixel Slate functions a lot like a laptop. Of course, you need one of those pricey keyboards for this to be true.

Speaking of price, let’s get into that. This device costs about the same amount as an iPad, coming in at $600 for the base model. The more powerful versions are even more expensive. That’s before shelling out for a $200 Google Pixel Keyboard. Oh, and did we mention that the Pixelbook Pen is $100?

    Weaknesses

Aside from the price, there are some major weaknesses in this tablet. For one, you have to use Chrome OS and the Google Play Store. When compared to the Microsoft Surface Pro, that makes this an inferior 2-in-1. Meanwhile, the device has inferior Pen tracking to the iPad, and works much less quickly and smoothly than Apple’s device.

In all, it’s hard to say what this Pixel Slate is trying to be. If it was trying to be a more PC-like device, it falls short compared to the Surface Pro. If it was trying to beat Apple at the tablet game, it certainly doesn’t pull that off.

    Bottom Line

It’s unclear who the Google Pixel Slate is for. Between its astronomical price and choppy performance, it’s very difficult to recommend this device over its competitors. You’re better off going with a Surface Pro or an iPad, depending on your needs.

  • PlayStation Classic Review: How Does it Stack Up?

PlayStation Classic Review: How Does it Stack Up?

Sony, following in Nintendo’s footsteps, has released their PlayStation Classic system. Does it live up to the hype surrounding it, or are these old games better off left forgotten? We’ll tell you in today’s PlayStation Classic review. Let’s travel back to the 90’s!

    PlayStation Classic Review

    playstationclassic
    Sony

    The Emulation

Firstly, the emulation on display here is excellent. The games on the system are all emulated perfectly as they existed back in the mid-to-late-90’s. That’s certainly an achievement in and of itself, but it does raise a few questions. If this is exactly the ways these games should look, aren’t they all a bit ugly?

The transition to 3D was rough for a lot of games. Ugly polygonal models and blurry backgrounds were the rule of the day. Many of these games have aged like milk, both graphically and in terms of gameplay. After twenty years or more, many of these are almost unplayable by modern standards.

    The Games

The game selection is incredibly hit-and-miss. There are some notable (and amazing) inclusions, like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil. There are also glaring omissions, like Castelvania: Symphony of the Night and Twisted Metal II.

Unusual inclusions like Jumping Flash, Wild Arms and Intelligent Qube make the lack of Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot downright puzzling. The PlayStation had an incredible roster of exclusive games, so not having them available on this love letter to the 90’s is nearly criminal.

For every Oddworld and Tekken on the system there is another frustrating exclusion. No Silent Hill or Tony Hawk on a PlayStation throwback system? It’s hard to justify the $100 price tag with this selection of games.

    The Console

The console itself is a perfect mini replica of the PlayStation. Likewise, the controller is exactly as you remember it. Sadly, it’s not a DualShock controller, which makes 3D games like Metal Gear Solid a pain to navigate. There are thankfully two controllers for local multiplayer, what little is available in this game selection.

    Bottom Line

Overall, this is really a system only for diehard collectors. If you really want to play Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid again (without analog sticks) then knock yourself out. However, there are plenty of ways to do that without spending $100.

  • NASA InSight Mars Probe Has Landed: Here’s What It’s Looking For

NASA InSight Mars Probe Has Landed: Here’s What It’s Looking For

Is there anything more exciting than deep-space probes looking for new scientific discoveries among the stars? Yesterday, November 25th, the InSight Mars probe landed on the Red Planet. After a 301 million mile journey, the InSight probe is home. Here’s what the deep-space probe is looking for.

InSight Mars Probe: What’s it Looking For?

    nasa-insight
    Space.com

    Deep Readings

The InSight probe is looking to make some deep readings under the surface of Mars. We know previous little regarding Mars’ interior and InSight aims to change that. The main job of the InSight probe is going to be getting a feel for the interior workings of the Red Planet.

Firstly, Insight is looking into whether Mars wobbles in its orbit. The presence of such a wobble as the Sun and Mars’ moons pull on it could reveal the composition of Mars’ core. Such knowledge has eluded scientists up to this point.

    Seismology

The next test being undertaken by InSight is a seismographic one. The probe is going to try to ascertain more about the nature of Marsquakes and what the planet’s seismology means. There is also ample heat coming from inside the planet, which the probe will be investigating further.

Finally, radio arrays will be used to further study the interior of Mars. The presence of various minerals, metals and the like in Mars’ core will be of interest to scientists.

    The Mission

The InSight probe was launched back in May of 2018 by NASA. The mission’s purpose, as we described, is to learn more about the interior of Mars. NASA has stated that the mission is in preparation of future missions to the Moon and Mars by human explorers.

The complications of Mars missions are numerous. Only about 40% of Mars missions by any agency have been successful. Mars has only one percent of the atmosphere that Earth has, making it very difficult for spacecraft to slow in time to not be destroyed on entry.

    Entry

InSight, for its part, made its initial entry with mostly robotic assistance. The final 7 minutes of entry were largely human-aided by mission control on Earth. The craft slowed from 12,300 MPH to 5 MPH in time to stop safely before impact.

That kind of speed is hard to believe, but it just goes to show how impressive NASA’s scientists are! We look forward to seeing the discoveries this new probe will make on the surface of Mars.

  • Rivian R1T: A Luxury Electric Pickup Truck You Have to See

Rivian R1T: A Luxury Electric Pickup Truck You Have to See

The futuristic design and electric engine would make you almost think you were looking at a Tesla truck. However, the Rivian R1T is not from Elon Musk’s controversial company, but is its own beast altogether. RJ Scaringe, the CEO of Rivian, describes the R1T as a vehicle designed to “enable adventures.”

    Rivian R1T: Luxury Electric Pickup

    rivian-r1t
    Jalopnik

    Design

A glance at this futuristic truck tells you a lot about it. It’s sleek, it’s aerodynamic and it looks like something from the future. The front face has no grille, and the headlights are an odd oval shape. It’s impossible to mistake this vehicle for anything other than a high-tech new vehicle.

That design works in Rivian’s favor. We love the slick lines and Tesla-esque design ethos. It screams “luxury” while also underscoring how durable and usable this vehicle is.

The hood of the R1T pops open to reveal a front trunk that you can store things in. That’s because there’s no engine in the front! Much like Tesla before it, the Rivian R1T takes full advantage of its unique electric power source.

    Battery Options

The star of the show is the top-billed massive “400+ hour” 180-kWh battery. The next model down has a 135-kWh battery rated for above 300 miles. Finally, the smallest battery is a 105-kWh model rated for 230 miles. In any event, the truck is a rugged beast that looks well-suited for a variety of terrains and adventures.

All battery types will also support DC fast charging. That’s important for batteries with a capacity this high. The fastest charge supported can add 200 miles of range to the vehicle in only half and hour. However, how many stations offer that kind of power is unclear.

    Bottom Line

Expect to see the revolutionary Rivian R1T hit the road in November 2020. When it does, you can expect to see the base model with the smallest battery for $69,000. After a rebate of $7,500 that brings the base price down to $61,500, which is around the price of a normal luxury truck.

All of that with an all-electric motor and sleek design? Sign us up! Is it 2020 yet?
