  • Tech Throwback: The Apple 1

    Tech Throwback: The Apple 1

I like to take a look at where I’ve been to evaluate where Im going. Technology is cyclical after all… wait no its not. That said I still like all the feels that come rushing back like a flood of nostalgia every time I get my hand on the tech I grew up with. Im going to go back periodically and take a looking at the stuff that used to blow our hair back and get our minds rolling. Some of these device blew up and changed the world, some where ahead of their time and some just fell flat and became colossal failures. What do we have in store today? The Apple 1, lets talk about it.

    The Apple 1

We all know the story, Jobs and Woz in the garage.  Yes, We know The Apple I went on sale in July 1976 at a price of US$666.66, because Wozniak “liked repeating digits” and because of a one-third markup on the $500 wholesale price. We know that the first unit produced was used in a high school math class, and donated to Liza Loop’s public access computer center.

There were only About 200 units were produced and all but 25 were sold during nine or ten months. We saw the movies made about it, like Jobs, Pirates of silicon valley, iGenius, Billion Dollar Hippy and my favorite Steve Jobs. There is very little we don’t know about the launch of the first real computer buy 2 genius college kids. But it is still fun to reminisce and marvel at the magic of it all.

The Apple I’s built-in computer terminal circuitry was distinctive. All one needed was a keyboard and a television set. Competing machines such as the Altair 8800 generally were programmed with front-mounted toggle switches and used indicator lights (red LEDs, most commonly) for output, and had to be extended with separate hardware to allow connection to a computer terminal or a teletypewriter machine.

Just 2 Guys and a Will

This little project launched a computer and tech revolution that is currently evolved in to the very device I’m typing this article with on the NYC subway. All our wildest dreams have come true in this best of all worlds to be living in and it started with 2 kids in a garage. Not to make a trillion dollars, not to launch a tech revolution but solely to push themselves and see what they could do in a world telling them they couldn’t.

    The Final Thought

Now we are in a place where this now rare Apple 1 computer, one of only 200 originally built by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak at fledgling Apple Computer in Palo Alto, Calif., in 1976, was sold at auction Tuesday for $375,000, auctioneer RR Auction and auction platform Invaluable said in a press release. The computer is 1 of only 16 of the originals known to still be fully functional, Invaluable CEO Rob Weisberg said. The companies did not identify the seller or the buyer but said the seller originally purchased the machine for $300 and had earlier tried to sell it to Wozniak for $10,000. fantastic, Thanks Steves.

  • Beau’s App Review: Snake Vs Colors

Beau’s App Review: Snake Vs Colors

Beau’s App series. Each week, I install whatever is the No. 1 bestselling app on the iOS or Android store and review it, to save you the effort in case it’s total waste of life. This week the sequel to paper.io a game called Snake vs Colors is in the top spot and we are gonna talk about it. Why isn’t it No. 1? not sure, its a very simple and basic game but it’s free. So let take a look and see what has this game rocketing to the top of the charts.

    Snake Vs Colors

The basic sentiment of this game is hat you are a slithery snake, and the colors are out to get you. By slithering and sliding your way through deadly color obstacles. Drag your finger left or right to avoid them. You can only touch colors that are the same color as you. Colors change super fast, and you need to be 100% attentive to navigate through.

This game is another in the line of casual app games by Crazy Labs. Crazy Labs is a casual games brand, under which TabTale develops and publishes fun and addictive games. You probably remember these guys from some of their other titles; Stack & Run, Word Sandwich, RAINBOW Color by Number, and City Vandals.

    The Experience

ITs quick and full of adds. There is no real challenge and but the 5th 6 second round you are done and ready to delete this game. There is only one real goal, to waster your time and show you ads. A game without a sense of purpose or achievement is in itself counter productive. Not only is there no point, there is no satisfaction… only frustration. I don’t know how or why Snake Vs Colors has made it to the number 1 slot, but it has no place there… This app was deleted from my phone before I finished the review.

  • DC Universe Streaming Service is Alive

DC Universe Streaming Service is Alive

DC has launched their new streaming content app today, DC Universe. The subscription based DC Universe platform offers a slew of DC content for an annual or monthly fee. The service will be $74.99 for an annual subscription, or $7.99 a month. They will be offering original and exclusive content as well. The premiere date for the service’s first live-action original series, “Titans,” is October 12, with each of the 12 episodes released weekly.

“DC Universe is not an attempt to be everything to everyone,” Jim Lee, CCO of DC Entertainment and a veteran comic book artist said in a press release. “It’s an attempt to be the most immersive experience for fans of the DC characters and stories.”

You’ve got a punchton of TV shows (live-action and animated), a girthy collection of DC feature films and pretty much all of the DCAU animated movies with you at all times. Somethings I was looking for are not there, but we can get into in a second. As for functionality, it works and its lives. When you click a video, the video plays.

    DC Universe or Just Batman?

The image quality is adequate, it’s as good as it needs to be. The audio and video are functional, and surprisingly fine. The Dark Knight is featured) in its IMAX aspect ratio, Its truly an amazing cinema accomplishment. Oddly I haven’t seen this movie in a year or two, nice to give it the attention it deserves. I’m excited to go through the troves of content on this app; The Dark Knight, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (it’s the uncut version), The Dark Knight Returns, Lois & Clark, all 4 original Superman movies, The original Wonder Woman series, Birds of Prey, Young Justice and (of course) Batman: The Animated Series. The app works, but it is a little Batman heavy.

    The Final Thought

It feels like a lot but at the same time a lots missing from the DC Universe. Why isn’t any or all of Arrowverse included? No Recent DC movies, the newest is Dark Knight, which is 10 years old. No Trailers or DC fan boy chat rooms. Why can’t I stream every episode the Batman 66? The comic collection is pretty extensive but focused too much on Batman. This is feeling more like a money grab then the immersive DC app I was hoping for. For those of you wondering, first comics downloaded Aquaman #60 and Batman: A Death in the Family. First Video watched, the impressive original Superman cartoons by Max Fleischer. Happy Batman Day Everybody!

  • GoPro Hero 7 Line Up Announced

GoPro Hero 7 Line Up Announced

Go Pro has been facing some rough times lately. Sales are down, products are failing or going unrecognized. We won’t even mention the leak inside the organization spilling unreleased product info. There is some good new though, the extreme sports camera guys have officially announced a new 7-series line featuring three hd cameras. They are separated by numerous features and functions in quality. The new tiers are now easily distinguished by their color. They come in black, silver, and white housings. With Black At the top end of the line is the $399 GoPro Hero 7 Black. All the Hero 7 uses the same 12-megapixel sensor, has the same custom GP1 processor (with a small bump in RAM), and offers the same capture capabilities: 4K video at 60-frames per second, 2K at 120-frames per second, and hi-def 1080P at 240-frames per second if you’re after an extremely slow motion effect.

Whats New With the GoPro Hero 7

With the cameras being waterproof to a depth of 10 meters, can livestream footage, and offers GPS location tracking, but the real reason GoPro thinks you’ll upgrade to the Hero 7 Black is a feature it’s calling “HyperSmooth stabilization,”.  This  the company says will work as well as a mechanical hardware gimbal when it comes to smoothing out footage captured when running, riding a bike, or other activities where you’re bouncing around.

No more jumpy shaky footage as you leap from an airplane with nothing but a pillow case? BTW,  that does need to be visually documented if anyone wants to try it . The still software stabilization, meaning data from a built-in gyro is being used to digitally cancel out any jarring motions, which in turn means your footage is going to get cropped. Cropping? Could be good, could be bad, ill have to see a final shot to tell. Not optimistic though.

The Hero 7 Black is the most familiar of the bunch, as it nearly exactly copies the all-black, waterproof, rubbery design of its predecessors (the Hero 5 and Hero 6 Black). It’s the second camera to use GoPro’s custom GP1 processor, which the company first used last year in the Hero 6 Black after splitting with longstanding supplier Ambarella. There are number of new features in the GoPro Hero 7 Black due to the work GoPro has been doing on their own. New features like including live-streaming, a wicked in-camera time-lapse feature, a smart HDR photo mode, and the most important, the groundbreaking in-camera digital stabilization algorithm.

    Black/ Silver/White

Stepping down from the GoPro Hero 7 Black are the $299 Hero 7 Silver and the $199 Hero 7 White. Those price cuts cost you the fancy GP1 sensor and the Black version’s HyperSmooth stabilization. They also include a smaller 10-megapixel sensor and reduced capture capabilities. The Hero 7 Silver maxes out 4K at 30-frames per second. In contrast the GPS-less Hero 7 White can only hit 1440P at 60-frames per second. You might also notice that neither camera comes with the Hero 7 Black’s front-facing status LCD screen. This is  making it a little hard to nail the correct facial expression as you are “landing it”.

  • Tech Throwback: Windows 95

    Tech Throwback: Windows 95

I like to take a look at where I’ve been to evaluate where Im going. Technology is cyclical after all… wait no its not. That said I still like all the feels that come rushing back like a flood of nostalgia every time I get my hand on the tech I grew up with. Im going to go back periodically and take a looking at the stuff that used to blow our hair back and get our minds rolling. Some of these device blew up and changed the world, some where ahead of their time and some just fell flat and became colossal failures. Today, we’re highlighting Windows 95.

    Windows 95

You know it well, It kicked our Technology revolution in to 5th gear.  Know around the world as  a quantum leap in difference in technological capability and stability. Windows 95. Windows 95 (codenamed Chicago) is the operating system developed by Microsoft as part of its Windows 9x family of operating systems. It is the successor to Windows 3.1x, and was released to manufacturing on August 15, 1995, and generally to retail on August 24, 1995. Do you remember the lines to get a copy?

All we had prior to this was DOS. Now Windows 95 was capable of running DOS and Windows-based applications, although it had completely removed DOS as the underlying platform, unlike previous versions of Windows. This helped in overcoming two limitations: eight-character file names and memory-related problems.

Windows 95 sported new technical features along with updating existing features. It brought updated visual styles and interface advancements. It had new and improved Windows control and introduced the desktop, which was represented as a folder which holds different files. Shortcuts, icons and the recycle bin were introduced in Windows 95. The Computer was no longer for the super tech geek, your mom could now operate it.

    Windows 95 Social Impact

Twenty years ago, Microsoft changed the world. On August 24, 1995, Windows 95 was released to the public. It was the beginning of a revolution that has helped shaped the technology world for the next two decades. There was even a one hour instructional video with  Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston. You know them better  as Chandler and Rachel from Friends. Then the Empire State Building and Toronto’s CN Tower were lit up in Microsoft’s colours. Lastly the Rolling Stones were paid a rumoured $8m for allowing “Start Me Up” to provide the soundtrack to its television adverts. We now lived in a different world then we had just a few hours before.

    The Final Thought

Computers changed what could be done, Windows 95 changed who could do it. Together they changed the world overnight. It came, it was upgraded, it went. We all know by the time Windows 95 was finally ushered off the market in 2001. It had undoubtedly become a fixture on computer desktops around the world.

  • 2 New iPad Pro

    2 New iPad Pro

It is time for me to do some detective work and start to decipher where and when we will see a new iPad Pro. I was fairly certain they would mention it in the gather round event, but historically they have held another event in October for new iPads and Macs. Putting my internet sleuthing skills to the test, here is what I’ve come up with.

    2 iPad Pro Conclusions

Apple’s release of iOS 12.1 earlier today has already given us a peek at a new feature: Memoji syncing. In that article, I suggested that this feature would make sense with the release of new iPads with a TrueDepth camera system later this year. Currently, Memoji is only supported on the iPhone – but adding support to the iPad would mean users would want to sync their characters between each device. Conclusion number 1. The new iPad Pro will have Memojis.

An icon found in iOS 12 developer beta 5 has lead me to a key details about Apple’s iPad Pro. A blue icon update for the iPad shows a more iPhone x looking device as compared to the previous blue icon for the iPad. This is not a leak but merely an update to the icons in the developer tool. The icon itself is a symbol that will be used for the battery usage UI. The tiny blue iOS 12 icon shows a tablet with thinner, more uniform border lines and a home row of apps at the bottom. Having analyzed these side by side I’m ready for my second conclusion. Conclusion number 2 – the new tablet will have ultra-thin bezels, just like the iPhone X, but no notch. The existing iPad icon does show a home button and a front-facing camera at the top.

    The Final Thought

Though Apple hasn’t announced anything officially, there’s a huge amount of buzz about two new Pro models surfacing before the end of 2018. Rumors are in full swing and the next big apple announcment awaits.  WHat we do know is Apple is prepping two new tablets for late 2018 — one that measures “around 11 inches,” which could be the rough equivalent of the current 10.5-inch model, and a 12.9-inch model.

  • PlayStation Classic, Is It Too Soon?

PlayStation Classic, Is It Too Soon?

It appears Sony is looking to cash in on the retro gaming craze. In an announcement earlier, Sony revealed the brand-new PlayStation Classic. Exactly like Nintendo’s retro consoles, the PS Classic is miniature version of the original This will hit stores and online retailers December 3 for $100. Is it too soon? It has been 23 years and 4 iterations since the original system was released.

    PlayStation Classic Details

My first thought and reactions were as follows. One, is the disc tray functional? No it is not. That answers questions number two, can I play my original PlayStation cds? No I cannot. Well now I need to know what games are included with this retro mini PlayStation. It will includes games like Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. There’ll be 20 bundled titles in total, but those five are the only ones announced at the moment.

So apparently we won’t be able to download additional games online. Which would have been a huge selling point. Additionally the memory card slots are just for show. Games will save with “virtual” memory cards and you’ll be able to suspend, or freeze, your progress with the system’s Reset button. The Open button will switch games.

he PlayStation Classic costs $99, has 20 games, 2 controllers, and includes an HDMI cable and USB cable, as well as an instruction manual that’s almost a work of art in its industrial simplicity. three major retailers have opened preorders for the PlayStation Classic. You can put your hard-earned dollars down right now and reserve yourself one for when it finally comes out at Walmart, Best Buy and Gamestop. Sorry Amazon…

    The Final Thought

Is this too soon or am I just getting old? Im just not getting excited about nostalgia for a next gen system. To me,  a classic nintendo guy,  the Playstation was the next gen. I don’t like the idea that it is only 20 game and that I have no say in those 20. I do kinda want to play Twisted Metal 1 again but everything else is still available in a best more advanced formatt. Also, and correct me if i’m mistaking, cant my PlayStation 4 play the original Playstation Disc? Why would I need a PlayStation Classic?
